CU's Scott: No plans to transfer
Buff RB says this season has been "learning experience"
Colorado freshman running back Darrell Scott says he expects to play against Nebraska next week in the Buffs' must-win, regular-season finale.

And for those wondering whether a frustrating season has soured him on CU and Boulder, Scott just rolls his eyes. He's planning to play against the Cornhuskers next year, too.
Scott says rumors he might leave CU for another program following the season are bogus.
"I don't know what those people are talking about," Scott said. "Whatever they're talking about, it's bull. If I wasn't going to be here, I wouldn't have decided to come to Colorado. It's as simple as that. I'm here.
"That's what people do. They talk. They haven't had one snap of football and they talk, but what can I do? Just play and ignore all the criticism."
It has been a trying time for a young man who had enormous expectations thrust upon him from the minute he donned a CU cap on national television last February and proclaimed he would be a Buff.
He joined the program in late July with many believing he would simply don his No. 2 jersey, throw on a helmet and be good for 150 yards and two touchdowns a game from Day One. He remained grounded.
When media members picked himas the preseason newcomer of the year in the Big 12 Conference he openly questioned their thinking by saying he hadn't even put on shoulder pads yet.
He has been plagued by injuries and has had to learn to play through pain for the first time in his life. A knee, a groin, a hamstring and an ankle have slowed him at different times this season. The ankle has been most troubling and he will probably spend the next week before game day with his fingers crossed hoping it doesn't get turned or stepped on again.
"I'm kind of glad I got injured really because it helped me in some areas I thought I needed to work on," he said. "It made me sit down and actually do what I needed to do and that was to settle down and look at some film and just get mentally tough."
Scott also acknowledges the college game offered a bit of a wake-up call in terms of what it takes to be successful at levels beyond high school. He has an appreciation for film study now that he didn't quite grasp when the he joined the program in late July.
Scott uses two words over and over again when talking about his first season. He calls it a "learning experience" most often and occasionally a "humbling experience."
Running backs coach Darian Hagan recruited Scott and became somewhat of a father figure to him in the process. Since Scott arrived in school, Hagan has consistently challenged him in every way. He has asked him to become more of a student of the game. He has asked him to play hurt. He has asked him to put aside his ego while fellow freshman Rodney Stewart played in front of him.
Hagan tells Scott, who eventually hopes to play in the NFL, that if he hopes to earn a job there, he has to treat each day of his college career like a job.
"I think he has handled it well," Hagan said. "I think it has humbled him in the fact that he hasn't been able to do what he's done his entire life. He's having to study more. He's having to put in a little more effort than what he's had to do in the past."
Hagan said he has seen the frustration on Scott's face at times this season and he has had a help rebuild his confidence at times. He said every times Scott gets the ball he hopes for good things for him.
Hagan said one of the most difficult times was last week during the Oklahoma State game. Scott wanted to play but hadn't practiced most of the week leading up to the game. So coaches made him watch the entire game from the sideline.
"I don't think it has stunted his growth," Hagan said. "The biggest thing he has to do is concentrate. When you're hurt and especially when you're not practicing, the easiest thing to do is not pay attention fully because, 'It's not me doing the deal.' That's the thing he has to understand is even though you're not participating in practices, you still have to be involved mentally."
Hagan said he also has heard and read speculation about Scott's future in Boulder and even asked him about it at one point. He said he and Scott have a solid relationship and talk to each other and if there was smoke to that fire, he believes he would know about it by now.
"He has never said anything like that to me," Hagan said.
Scott said he has stayed in regular contact with his mother this fall, who is back home in California. He said her advice for handling most situations always leads him back to his faith, which has helped him through the toughest times this season.
It also has allowed him to peak at next season when he hopes to be stronger and healthier and well-versed in what a college football season requires from the athletes involved.
"Our team is close-knit," he said. "We joke around, laugh around. We have a lot of chemistry on this team. We're just young and we need to develop as a team more. I think next year is going to be excellent, but we're trying to scrap right now for a fifth-place spot."

Eat that Nepa and Whosyourmama! I know you are waiting eagerly for some ammo to dump on the Buffs; looks like you have to find something other than Scott transfering....maybe you can go back to the Cody is too short bit???

Scott is so grounded. His maturity and perspective is really impressive. His perspective is far more laudable than a lot of the people posting and speculating irresponsibly on the web. Love this: "I'm kind of glad I got injured really because it helped me in some areas I thought I needed to work on," he said.
Great attitude. This kid is going to be special on the field and a leader and he seems to be interested in hitting the books too.

I love the guy's attitude - sounds as humble now as he did on signing day. I think that a healthy/fast speedy plus a mature D-Scott, can become a pain in the a$$ for defenses (if we ever got an OC who understood football basics.) We all know the kid has loads of potential - he is a stud behind a big, healthy offensive line... As far as Kasa - and yes nepa, check my prior posts, he seems like a nice kid, but nothing to freak out over. We've got Major, Rippy, and Katoa each with 4 years left to play, each of whom would flat out EMBARASSS this kid who's about to ride some pine in Fla (yea, they'll do well with or without him for 4/5 years.) Meanwhile, we've got a TON of freshmen and sophmores who will excell -BTW if they would ever FIRE HELFRICH AND RIDDLE, theese kids would look even better...

It's gratifying when a 19-year old has proper perspective (even when there are those much older who have lost theirs). Here's hoping that Scott's patience is rewarded next season with a fully loaded offensive line (and yes, a game plan better suited for his talents).
Finally, a good day for the program. Scott reminds us that you don't have to have it easy for it to be good, and the women's team crushes CSU, 93-63.
Looking forward - which of the five recruits who have committed to the Buffs this month do you think will have the greatest impact?

Kyle, no one of substance and good sense would consider whether Scott would transfer. Why cater to the few alarmists and naysayers?
I don't know why this article had to be written.

Oh, and vk? We up here were thinking the same thing last year about saving the good stuff to show it all in one explosive, eye-popping, "that's what I'm talking 'bout" moment.
The truth is, when it occurred during the KS game last year, it made people even madder because it should have happened earlier. Then, of course, we played you guys and soiled ourselves on national television. But that's another story.

Awesome
knowing that I'll be able to watch Darrell demoralize defenses next year is only half of it.
knowing that nutcase nepa is squirming has already brightened my day.

"Not transferring" might equate to when pro players say "it's not about the money."
Of course it's always about the money. A little reading between the lines regarding the future of DS at CU might be appropriate.

What a bummer this season has been. So many injuries. So many mis-steps by the whole program. The positive side is, they all got a healthy dose of BIG XII FOOTBALL!!! and I imagine this experience will help them in preparing for next season. (by the way they played some of the games it looked like they had been practicing for INTERMURALS!!!)
The running game will be explosive next year. A healthy line will open up the passing game. If the WR's can hold onto the ball, we'll have an offense.
(A perfect time of year to replace an OC, isn't it?)

Sorry Buffs fans, but this guy will never live up to the hype. He is quoted as saying he's glad he got hurt? You'll never hear someone who is a competitor say something like that, his comments are telling that he doesn't have what it takes. CU is a joke, Hawkins has had three consecutive losing seasons and it isn't going to get better anytime soon.

We now find out that DS was not injured against OSU, he was held out of the game for other reasons.
The story changes everyday with Hawk. His veracity is definately at issue.

Actually, hawkins reveled (before the game) that the reason scott was unlikely to play was because he could not practice that week.

I'll try again to steer us away from nepa and his rants. Perhaps if we ignore him, he will hold his breath until he turns blue ...
Anyone excited about the verbal commit of JC wide receiver Andre Simmons (three star at Scout; four star at Rivals)? 6'3" and a 4.4 40. And, at least to published reports, available academically to schools other than K-State!
Go Buffs!

Unlike Kasa, Simmons is smart enough to go where he is needed. Coming from SC he is also smart enough to realize practicing and playing in extreme heat and humidity is not very pleasant.
And the best thing about any 4 star recruit for the Buffs is the pain it creates for neepad.

I will give you credit for being well versed in CU football, nepa.
Yes, Simmons is taking other visits, and is considered a "soft verbal" by Rivals. I'm sure you also read his quote to Scout after his visit last weekend: "I'm committed. I loved it."
Every commitment is "soft" until February (just like the "Lincoln three" from last December). That doesn't mean we can't talk about it.
Go Buffs!

I have decided that neepad....and I use the term human here loosly.....is a human cancer. Everyday all day. and not just as kneepad but as whoami and god knows who else trying, in his own words, to "burn the program all the way to the ground.
Last time I asked him what his true motivation was, I get this crusade against nepotism.....
Guess this lonely twisted soul will be lonely and twisted until "Brave New World" gets here and families are eliminated from the earth.
What the hell happened in your family neepad? These posters that pose as your parents are humorous but I think in reality they must be hitting awfully close to home.

At least Scott isn't out stealing purses on campus because of his frustrations.
Scott really matured because of this. He's realizing not everyone can just come in and be Adrian Peterson, and AP dealt with his fair share of nagging injuries too.
Darrell is going to be great, there is just a learning curve, maturity curve, and physicality curve in making the jump.

Montana - thanks for actually bringing up useful info. Let the usual knuckle-heads jar with each other all day - back and forth over lame issues.
Great news on the recruiting.
It is really tough for most Freshmen to play in their first year. USC seems to do the best job of playing very young players. But I say, there are a handful of freshman across the country who are REALLY ready to play at the next level. CU has been forced to do it out of neccessity.
At that age, players have to adjust to being away from home - higher academic expectations - much bigger demands from the team. They have to mature mentaly as well as physically. Scott has some growing to do - and good for him to recognize it.
In the meantime - he got to play. He got a sense for what it will take to excell at this level. He's a sophmore in the sense that he now knows what it will take. Ater that he will have to figure out how to execute what it will take. When that happens, he'll be a junior (mentally, as oposed to actual college years). And when he has the whole thing figured out and is playing ahead of the curve - he will be a "senior" in his mentality.
Many young Buffs did some fast growing up this year. Look for good things next year. Now is a great time to join CU. Join a program on the rise. Its not there yet - but with a better schedule and tons of young players with experience - next year could be very promising.
GO Buffs.

This piece is a manufactured story. I wonder how long the CU PR people had to prep DS for this interview?
CU PR flak: "Repeat after me Darrell, it's been a 'learning experience.'
DS: "No, I'm pissed. I should be playing every down."
CU PR: "Darrell, if you transfer you lose an entire year. Let's try again: you're 'glad the coaches sat you down'."
DS: "No, I'm mad as hell ... hang on a second, I'm getting a text from a Texas area code ... OK, sorry ... that was nothing...
CU PR: "Now these Daily Camera writers have already been briefed on what to write. They certainly aren't going to ask any tough questions, so just go with it and you MIGHT play against Nebraska."
DS: OK, whatever you say ... now I've got to return this text.

It's a little late in a miserable season to be teaching lessons.
The guy has been hurt all season, we don't have a lot of other options, if he was healthy enough to play at all, they should have put him in the game. Don't start him, but put him in the game and see if he can help the team.
That game certainly wasn't a blowout. If someone could have made a play here or there, that could have been our shocker of the season.
Hawk seems to be good at pulling off one shocker a year, let's hope he pulls it off in Lincoln. I think we need 3 scores from defense and special teams to make it happen, but you never know!

Be sure to read the piece in the Post today about the QB from Glenwood. He's a 6', 185, senior who wants to play D-1 but the knock on him is that he's too small, too slow, and doesn't have the arm strength to play at that level.
And, unfortunately, his dad isn't the head coach of a BCS school.

Son, I have told you your daddy was a drunk and a loser. Your atheletic skills were terrible and even if your daddy could have been a peewee coach you had no chance.
It is hard to take son, and there is no reason to take it out on the Hawkins family or any other family.

Cody Hawkins was offered scholarships by four BCS schools, Colorado, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Oregon. Three other schools also offered him scholarships, all regular contenders from non BCS D1 schools, BYU, Utah, and Boise State. He was rated as a three star pro style QB #17 overall in his recruiting class. He has some amazing things on his college resume, also some not so amazing things. Every player faces adversity on the field some more than others due to happenings outside their own control, and no I'm not talking about Cody being too short. Anyone with half a brain can see that you don't have to be a prototype to succeed. Daniels, Reesing in our conference alone prove that, and frankly I've been realy impressed with Cody's play on many occasions. There are maybe a handful of QB's in college football that could have succeeded on our team this year, none of them are on our roster. Every time you make a comment, or really any time I look at your screen name I feel embarrased about your unhealthy and unfounded obssesion with Cody and his Father.

I hope the only transferring Ballenger does is to the CU basketball team; we could use a 6'5" 230 dunking machine on the court. Can you imagine how he must feel? He turned down a scholarship to play at Gonzaga, a top ten hoops school, just to hold Cody's gatorade.
Here's a story for the Camera! Ask Matt if Cody likes the red or the green gatorade?

Fish - my apologies. I know I read several posters speculate that DS would be looking to transfer. Whos, nolanjp (when he was having a bad week - but he wrote a nice apology later on) and a few others. I mis-categorized you in that group, just like many here thought nepa brought it up.
As for questions - I like the ones you brought today - except for the underlying implication that the coaches are playing Cody over Ballenger improperly. However, I'd add, what coaching techniques will be tried to improve FG % and special teams play?
I'm looking forward to DS's play.
And, for all the Texas folk upset last Feb, did you see the bit (I think in Woelk's column today) about his mom is still in CA. What happened to the so-called "bank" job. I like seeing that Hawk is doing his best to the keep the program clean. I still have full faith in his recruiting since he is about where he was at this time last year. We haven't hit the end of the season when coaches get fired and lots of commits suddenly go up in the air. We also haven't seen the last minute gold finds like Speedy. The only real bummer is Kasa.

Let me post this one again:
NepaWhosYourDr.TalliDaddyTomHusker is the same person and I’ll also point out that this person is clinically insane.
I’m not joking or tying to be funny. This person lives to post his hate on a Buff’s website. Not only do I think he is unemployed, but I think this is what he dedicates his entire life to. Just look at the velocity of his daily posts and the 7 days a-week relentlessness. As I fully believe this person is crazy, it would not surprise me in the least if Nepa is the person that threatened to kill a Nebraska coach last season. When someone is clearly as frighteningly obsessed as Nepa, you can't trust them to behave life a rational human being. This person is deeply disturbed.
Dude, whom ever you are, take a few days off and reevaluate your life. Is posting on this site really what you want dedicate your life to?
I usually insult NepaDr.WhosyourTom, but this person is so pathetic and scary that his unyielding postings are enough to convict himself on flagrant insanity. Get a grip Bro! Get a grip on yourself and find another hobby outside of football. CU football has made you psychotic.
And although I have serious concerns about Coach Hawkins and the direction of the program, Go Buffs!

You are a scary human being.

"Clinically Insane". Let's address that statement. Throwing "Iceballs" at your own yellow jacketed security guards would match that definition, Huh? Hawkins and his elfs coundn't fight their way out of a phone booth. (Sorry Gunny Highway) It wasn't put that way, more like, 'Those retards couldn't fight their way out of a 'poop' house!' (Can't get bounced by using profanity) Why doesn't that SOB wear sunglasses, he squints so much OR is he trying to hold back tears all the time when watching his team perform. AND PLEASE, stop with the 4 out of the last 7 talk. Actually, you dropped 65 on us last year and remember 2001.......Wow, that was even better.....Ok, are we done now. 46-18-2

Only a complete tool would post such a rant as salsajohn. I find it very interesting that a posting audience that professes such an advanced intellectual base, gets so worked up over statements that throw a lemon into rose colored koolaid you all are so fond of drinking.
It reminds me of the time I went to the zoo and made a face at some chimps. They responded by throwing feces. Intellectual superiority indeed!

Everyone sing along now, 'Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam and the dear and the antal.........'
The thing that has stuck with me for soo long and what started my annual homage was that "ENTIRE" section of buff students that got tossed out of their own stadium in front a national TV audience. That was something to be proud of, wasn't it. All of the rest of you guys can talk about what you want but I'm focusing on the facts!

Geeze, and when you guys come to Lincoln, we treat you like family. OK, family is a little extreme, but maybe the drunk uncle that shows up every year around Thanksgiving and mooches off the family. The BIG 12 is the family.....and Buffs, you are moocing off us right now. Why don't you go to the Mountain West or something like that. They would welcome you with open jail cells.

Kyle has been directly asked in his monday evening chat sessions (some of you might want to actually join in some time with all of your questions) specifically about the DS rumors and if he could talk to DS to put it to rest finally. It seems he did just that.
Whosa, still having dialogs with the voices in your head I see.
I posted this under Woelk's column but it addresses the same thing here:
"Columns like this are not only to address what the neighborhood trolls write. It actually helps a little against the negative recruiting that CU is likely going through in part thanks to those same trolls. It sucks that they get somewhat legitimized by having their non-sense addressed in a formal fashion, but at least someone cleared it up for the potential recruits to easily find."
Also, regarding DS's productivity (or lack there of) this year; You all do know that RB's kind of need a good O-line to be productive right? There is a reason that the Broncos can pretty much plug in any RB into their system and get major yardage out of them. It is because they have had the O-line to open holes for them. Speedy is so valuable because he can hide and pop-up unexpectedly. DS is much bigger and easier to hone in on so he has to muscle his way to all the yardage he gets.
I know next year is a long way off, but I really am excited about it. If we can keep all of the pieces healthy and eligible and out of trouble we will have a great year next year. Lots more weapons available.

What happens to a snow ball once it's thrown at a security guard. It smashes his head, falls to the ground, melts and makes brown mud on the field. Very stange, my long haired cow.

The problem with not discussing all of history is then all we have is 51-65 last season or what was 2001........I forget. Buff, help me out. We can talk about "recent" history if you like BUT the problem with that is ALL of this jibber jabber takes YEARS to build. Buff decided YEARS ago, whenever, you pick, that they got tried of getting their RUMP handed to them that they wanted to fight back. So they took to the waves, hammering away, from a distance at their enemy, RED NATION, the one that keeps beating them every year and start making fun of corn and cows and all that crap. Well, WE, were not going to just sit there and NOT conversate, so we joined the party and here we are today. SO buff, if it makes you feel better to talk about 51-65, then you go right ahead and RED NATION will set back and count our titles, flaunt our academia, put butts on the seats for going on 295 consecutive games. How 'bout that, my smack brothers!

hopefully the buffs won't utterly embarass.....this coming showdown in the land of corn. with no offense, and an equally beat-up, but game, defense, the outlook remains bleak shading to grim. the hope is the extra time off not preparing for post-season will allow some soul-searching by the headman. and as a result, some reinforcements on the field, as well as new minds in the staff-room. this achieved via aggressive recruiting. those players that choose to stay need some time to recharge their football mojo.......and fans need something worthwhile to be excited for.

What???
Kyle did you expect a different answer?
Do you think Scott would tell YOU if he was transfering or even considering it?
This article is just worthless.
Let's start asking some tough questions, these are tough times for the buffs. Let's get some answers.
Probably afraid Hawk will go off on you. He seems pretty sensitive lately to any questioning of him, his staff or the way the team has performed this season.
You guys weren't cutting the last coach any slack when he actually was performing. Now Hawk is 13-23 and no one dares to ask a tough question.
Posted by copcobuff on November 20, 2008 at 6:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)
How about this question, coach your offense is rated 106th in the nation in scoring and dead last in the Big 12, how do you plan to correct this problem?
Maybe try this, coach your quarterback is ranked dead last in the big 12 in almost every category and is ranked 76th in the nation is efficiency what are your plans to correct the problem or can we expect more of the same?
There I gave you two good questions to ask. Let me know if you need more. I'll help you.

Get that O-Line healthy, more matured, and Nepa himself could score a touchdown.

You stay classy Nebraska - nothing like making fun of a team who's quarterback and new father just died of stomach cancer after we whooped your a$$ for a National Championship... Wish we were all Fuskers.

vegASSbufffan, please check BEFORE you fire off on Lucky. #8 on the career AP yards list with 3 Heisman awards in front of him. And "Hawks" champ center was because we knew his "REAL" dreams reside in Lincoln and we wanted to make sure he knew we knew that. C'mon guys, get your act together on this board. There IS alot of depresion amongst the people above you dreamers. I see alota 'next year' and '106th on offense' up there and we can't have that sort of negative attitude from you pukes going into this game. We need you at your best, C'mon, your killin' this game with all of your 6th story of a Howard Johnson's balcony jump talk.

and by the way: could you all please stop with your illusions of grandeur. Nebraska WILL NEVER be what it was 10 - 15 years ago. There is too much parity in the college game these days, there are no more dynasties, you will never be one, and you are not endowed by birth right to be better than us. You may have your good years here and there, but rest assured, you will also have your bad years and we will be there to help them along!

CA:
Could be quite true about NU never returning to dominance, and if that is the case, given CU's relative prominance compared to NU's back in the day, that probably puts CU about where they should be here in 2008 and beyond.

Well all Buff fans, You have to remember, what is there to DO in Nebraska but obsess over football. It's Nebraska, after all.
If you in live in Colorado, there is a variety of things to do. It is pretty, there are mountains, and skiing , a major city ,etc etc.
They have lost the one thing they could hold on to- a top rated team, and now must pathetically come here and post drivel.
Trailer trash or should be is all they are.
Once Osborn left as coach the legacy died.

I've been a supporter of Hawkins (son & coach), staff and all they've seemed to do for the program, but this year was very disappointing. You can point to youth and injuries, which obviously don't help, but recruiting is going to be hurt by this poor, poor, poor performance. The Missouri game, alone, probably cost this program some recruits (we lost a great D line prospect from Colorado to Florida just this week). The best kids go to the best programs. Good programs don't make excuses; good programs don't have seasons like this one; good programs have good players to fill the gaps left by starters who are injured, suspended, ineligible, whatever. I didn't think that we would win many more games than we have this year (even with a fully healthy and eligible squad); we had a tough schedule. What I was hoping for was a more competitive team on the field. I was looking for a team that looked like they belonged on the same field as the top programs that we faced this year. Sadly, we often looked way overmatched, scared, lost, under-prepared and far inferior in terms of raw talent. We have numerous guys out there that are not Big 12 caliber players. This year's version of the Buffs likely wouldn't have held their own in most mid-major conferences this year. That to me is a red flag. If you've only got talent at the first string level, you'll never succeed. I know that takes time to develop, but this year sure made it look as though we're no where close. I'll still give Hawkins & staff another year or so, but things had better change drastically next year. Over .500 and a bowl is an absolute MUST. NO MORE EXCUSES. It's time to prove something; otherwise, it's time to head in yet another new direction. And sadly, I can see Scott transferring. I've said it before and believe it might be a possibility, and of course he’s not dumb enough to admit that to the media.

CABuffalo, siess, and RashaanSalaam, no going up in tall building for you 3 for the rest of this year because you 3 sound like you're in the jumping mood. siess, All we have is the past, the present and the future. We know about the past and the present, BUT we don't know about the future yet. All we can do is guess and my guess is; based on what I've seen THIS year; RED is looking better and BROWN, not so better. I thought when Hawk was hired this series would get better again. Not so good. Other than a Coach Yakahan gaf last season; 51-65, we are still 2-1 v. Hawk. Bo almost got over on the #2 team in the country. I know, I know, almost only counts in horse shoes and.......On paper, this should not be a game, BUT RED always decides to play Brown close. Don't know though. One common opponent that sticks out; Kansas.
NU 45 KU 35
CU 14 KU 30
Uh OH, look out below. Make sure the sidewalk is clear before you jump.

Way too pessimistic on the Buffs and conspiratorial on DS. He rolled his eyes when asked the (stupid) question. Previously when he heard Buffs fans were down he said "what's up with that Buffs nation!?" He's 19 and he knows injuries to a young team, especially to the O-line, are very debilitating.
I agree it's been a disappointment. And, like you, I'm more disappointed in the lack of competitivenes than the W-L record. But, injuries ARE an excuse when you're young and thin. That's my opinion. One cupcake on our schedule and we'd be 6-5, bowl eligible and thinking about being 7-5 after knocking off NU going into that bowl. A few less injuries and an easier schedule and we'd all be modestly satisfied, but not elated, with where we are.
It's not a cop out, but if next year we're not much better than I think it's legit to start to wonder or get down.

RedRover-you miss the point. I don't doubt our program is struggling and we will lose on Friday.
However, the point is, if you have to come to this site and post your crapola . You see, the point is, when you live somewhere where there is actually culture and things to do, you don't obsess over your football team. I bleed black and gold and am alum but there are other things in life outside of Buff football. You people are so nuts you have to come here and post drivel that is what it is, of course when you have a up year and we are down. I would never dream of going up on a husker site and doing that.
That is the difference between you Husker fans and us. You put your team as the one and only thing in life that is important, and assume others feel about their team the same to the point they would jump from a building. Despite what you think, your team will never be what it was and you better get used to it.
