Cowboys corral Buffaloes

CU must win at NU for bowl bid

Thanksgiving will come with a side of desperation this season for the Colorado football program.

The Buffs will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the regular season finale against their red rival in a little less than two weeks needing a victory to earn a bowl berth. That reality hit home following another disappointing and frustrating outing in a 30-17 loss to No. 11 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

The Cowboys came to Folsom Field heavy favorites but were frustrated most of the evening by a tough CU defense forced to play without its two senior safeties on senior day. The Buffs held the Cowboys 13 points below their season scoring average but could never get momentum going with a counter punch on the offensive side of the ball.

When it was over late Saturday night, the discussion in the Dal Ward Center glossed over what had just happened on the field and quickly turned to beginning the build up to a must-win contest at Nebraska.

"We always talk about finishing," coach Dan Hawkins said. "We have a big game coming up for a lot of reasons, if not for any other reason, just to finish.

"We need to continue to work and finish."

The Buffs fell to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the Big 12 Conference and must have six victories to become bowl eligible. The loss completed a sweep by the Buffs' three Big 12 South Division opponents this season. CU had swept its three south foes a year ago.

The game started on a sour note for two seniors. Wide receiver Cody Crawford fumbled after a reception at the CU 44-yard line and safety Ryan Walters was injured on the second play of the ensuing OSU drive.

The injury forced the Buffs to play with redshirt freshman Anthony Perkins at one safety spot and true freshman Patrick Mahnke at the other. Senior safety D.J. Dykes missed the final home game of his career with an undisclosed health problem.

The Buffs held Oklahoma State to apair of field goals on their first two possessions and the Cowboys held a 6-0 advantage after the first quarter.

The Cowboys finally got into the end zone midway through the second quarter thanks to a dazzling catch by sophomore wide receiver Dez Bryant, who snared a third-down pass across the middle with one hand and raced around defenders to the corner of the end zone. The play gave the Cowboys a 13-0 lead.

That catch proved to be the first of two wild scoring receptions.

After OSU surged to a 20-3 advantage on tailback Kendall Hunter's 43-yard run in the third quarter, Colorado retaliated with a wild and fortunate touchdown connection.

Quarterback Cody Hawkins threw to Crawford over the middle and the ball was tipped high into the air toward the goal line. Fellow wide receiver Scotty McKnight was running a route behind Crawford and ran underneath the batted ball, catching it for a 28-yard score.

"I game-planned that all week," McKnight said.

After a month spent rotating between Cody Hawkins and freshman Tyler Hansen at quarterback, coaches elected to stick with Hawkins the entire game Saturday. The sophomore never found the rhythm and protection that allowed him to throw four touchdown passes a week earlier.

Hawkins completed 19 of 37 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown and did not commit a turnover. His counterpart, OSU's Zac Robinson completed 15 of 23 passes for 217 yards and the show-stopping touchdown to Bryant.

"We were talking on the sideline that that was a SportsCenter Top 10 play," Robinson said.

Colorado was forced to stick with one player at tailback because of injuries. Freshman Darrell Scott re-injured his sprained ankle in practices and did not play in the game. Coaches leaned heavily on sophomore Demetrius Sumler, who ran a career high 22 times for 86 yards a touchdown.

"I had fun out there," Sumler said. "Just wish we could have gotten the win."

That summed up the day for Colorado, and the Buffs are hoping it doesn't also encapsulate the season.

50 yds is a long field goal but Mason would have made it. What is that 8 misses in a row? I wonder what the div 1 record is for consecutive misses? Maybe we have it, go Buffs!

I can't wait to not see Cody Crawford put a jersey on anymore. 1 fumble that led to 3pts and a dropped TD. He is horrible. We should be all tied up at 10 if you take those mistakes away and we make the 1st FG attempt. We're young and will get better.

Keep playing D and we might have a chance in the 2nd half.

Go Buffs!!!!!

Scott is injured and won't play unless there's an emergency. Glad Goodman kicked it through.

Nice to see our Husker friends here. I posted a comment on bigrednetwork.com and was censored because they couldn't handle any dissention.

Why play D Scott when we can give the ball to Sumler for 1 yarders up the middle.

Coach Hawkins love for playing Sumler is absurb!

Anyone named Cody should be kicked off this team. DStumbler wouldn't make it in Juco. D plays well, lil hawk continues to falter but tries to look cool. Big Hawk still looks stunned. If I made $1.8M a year, at least I would look like I knew what I was doing. He's a buffoon, not a buff. Is Chris Peterson still available? We hired the wrong guy.

Posted by IowaBuffFan on November 15, 2008 at 10:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Cornbred, grew up in CO now live in IA. I do have a team to root (not rout) for, and that is the Buffs. I will be in Lincoln on the 28th to see the Buffs put your Huskers in their place.

Can we ban these guys??? This is stupid. (Sorry Cornbred, I guess I should say this is stoooopid so you know what I'm saying).

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 10:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ah there you are whosa. I guess you were researching the name of that team member that agrees with you. What was his name then?

Or did you just decide to post under one of the retarded cream tonight just for fun?

You seriously want to call out Cody after the game he played? Sure we didn't win but he and the team played tough the whole game. All the people who have bashed Sumler all season I think need to get a life. He showed he can play tonight. For those who have bashed McKnight and said he couldn't play either, well that was a pretty good player I saw tonight. He hussled and caught that tipped pass for a touchdown. He didn't give up on the play and he made a nice diving catch.

Any word form anyone at the game on who won the Buffalo Heart Trophy?

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on November 15, 2008 at 10:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sure thing Iowabuff, you can ban people from saying things you don't want to hear - it's called censorship - and it's the hallmark of failing regimes.

Hawkins must be fired now before he and his son destroy the program.

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on November 15, 2008 at 10:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh yeah, the tipped pass, Cody will be claiming that he planned it that way - just another TD for Cody Hawkins. And did you know he won all of his midget games?

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 10:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And that player's name was.....

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 10:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Iowabuff is rightly annoyed (like the rest of us who actually want to discuss CU football) only to have to deal with a couple of drunk Nebraskans who are taking advantage of the full moon to crank up the corn still. ut then again, you've been busy looking for any player that will back up your claims. You claimed there were "many players" that agree with you. So far you haven't even named one. Much less many.

You can go back to squirrel hunting now. We didn't miss you.

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on November 15, 2008 at 10:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I heard Walters won the Buff Heart Award but Coach Dad intervened and said it should go to Cody instead! Of course, Cody will be the first player to win it three years in a row.

I enjoy reading some of the rants, it just proves that Boulder isn't completely full of rich and well educated white people.

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 10:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sure he did. Is this source the same guy that agrees with you? What's his name again?

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on November 15, 2008 at 11:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It must suck being Cody Hawkins. Your Dad pulls strings for you in every direction: he gets you invited to the best QB camps even though you don't deserve it; he makes you the starting QB at a BCS school before you even graduate from high school; he holds back more deserving athletes so that you can shine. And despite all these advantages ...

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 11:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, Dan is a miracle worker. He must have some how convinced those teams last year to make his son look good. He must be REALLY good friends with Stoops to let his son beat them in his freshman year...

And well, sure he has connections at Iowa State to get them to let Cody pass for 4 TDs in the second half after holding Hansen to no points in the first half...

It must suck to have midget envy.

Who's that player that agrees with you again? The one leading the dissension among the team? Which guy was that? I know you are reading the question because you keep replying to me. It's odd though that you would skip such a grand moment to prove to us all that you are right about Coach Hawk and Cody... What gives?

Posted by BuffTime on November 15, 2008 at 11:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

For actual Buff fans; Stanjarivus McKay was on an official visit on the sidelines today. He is a 6'2" 200lb Safety with 4.5 40 speed out of Long Beach Poly.

Scout shows Alante Wright, a 6'3" WR, scheduled for a visit in December. He had to sit out last year and is only now getting some interest. He also plays basketball so he should have decent hands.

Posted by BlackAndGold on November 15, 2008 at 11:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Alright Buff Fans, just got home from the game. Had seats at the 40 yard line a few rows back for the 1st half. Basically sat behind the players for the firs half. We were completely disgusted with the team and left for a friends suite and watched the second half from there. So here is my report...

1) DScott and Smith spend a lot of time together on the sideline, not interacting with other players. Regarding Smiths returns, he spends to much time waiting for blocks and needs to just hit the gas and go. (That was the opinion of everyone that watched the game with us.)
2) The energy level on the sideline was PATHETIC. Towards the end of the half fans in our section were yelling, "WAKE-UP....YOU ARE LOSING!!!". The players were completely not concerned with the fact that they were losing...totally non-chalant (spelling? sorry)...like it didn't even matter they were losing....they were having side conversations...just hanging out like what was going on didn't matter. Hawkins, the game, and his players were disconnected. It seemed like he knew they were going to loose and was thinking, lets just end this season cause' there's nothing we can do. For much of the 2nd quarter many of the players didn't even seem like they were paying attention to the game. Fans were upset by this.
3) Goodman came off the field after hitting the crossbar like it didn't even matter...myself and the fans around me were appawled (spelling?)...he was laughing it off with other players. He definitely received a few heckles' from the crowd because people were like "what, you just missed a field goal and you don't even care"

There is serious cause for concern. There are obviously no repercussions for losing a game in Hawks regime.

Very proud of the kids, nice to see Gundy give them and the defensive coaches credit.

Same old mistakes and bad decisions, poor kicking and special teams, things that go on and on under this coach, it is amazing to watch! Remember, the head coach recruits the players he has and plays the players he wants to play. When they don't perform, it is on him and him alone.

He is not smart enough to fix this in ten days, we have watched this go on and on for 3 years without getting fixed.

One of the best Eddie Crowder teams was the 1971 team, very young and won 10 games, beat Ohio St. and LSU on the road. This young team excuse is getting old old. Texas is playing with two freshman safeties. Florida is younger than the Buffs with 60 freshman and sophomores. Both BC running backs are pure freshman. Tell me it ain't coaching and I will laugh at you!

Anyone with any sense would have let Scott heal up weeks ago instead of playing him. The trainer should have taken charge of this and not let the kid practice until he was healthy, period.

Hawkins is going to be under big pressure next year. The team needs to cut back on their torture sessions, too many injuries, and there are going to have to be some assistant coaching changes, OC and ST for sure. If that is not done, and unless Hawkins wakes up and gets a real power running game going, he can forget his fifth year in my book. He is done. 8 wins plus will be mandatory next year, and the team will be on the road at Texas and Okie St. so it won't be easy. And there is Missouri who has him mystified.

I would not hold out any hope for a bowl game.
Neb. will win at home and we will be living with it for the next year, as much as I dispise the red bxxxxxxs.

The fact is Hawkins version of the Buffs has only won 13 games in 3 years, and digressed this year to boot. It just ain't happening.

Go Buffs!!!

Scott sat-he's hurt. Buffs played tough but our D was on the field too much. Just a few too many big plays but we did force some turnovers. Walters got hurt in the first half. Cody played fair-we had a lucky TD that was a deflected pass that McKnight caught as he fell into the endzone. We just dont have the horses. Kicking game forces us to go for it on 4th down-we doinked a field goal right off the bat. I agree with Don, if Hawkins does bring something next year that could be it. Hey Huskers-really good posts. Glad y'all know where the "!" key is on the keyboard. It makes for some great reads. I doubt we beat you so I am really looking forward to all the super information you provide on this site for the next 8 months.

That is just one persons opinion from the stands. If we have some bad seeds maybe they need to move on, or keep riding the bench.

I thought the players [the ones on the field] played hard, just sooo many mistakes. We just aren't very good [youth, coaching?].

Can you take scholarships away after they have been granted to someone who is currently playing?

Does it happen very often?

Wow Blackngold...Not a good report from the sidelines. The body language and energy is much easier to judge when YOU sit right there. Thanks. It doesn't bode well for the programs direction or coach. AD must be on full alert here so we can prevent the program from doing a Dow Jones like trip further into a ditch.

Posted by filthymcnastiehoustonbuff on November 16, 2008 at 10:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

For what it worth I thought the offensive game plan was better. Some good play calls, misdirection and much better run blocking. The 3 and outs killed us in the second half. Our defense was gassed. Just never had the feeling we were going to get back in the game after mid 3 rd quarter. That may be direct product of what Black and Gold saw at the game. Still not sure why we dont run any razzle dazzle with Hansen and Cody in together for a couple trick plays. What the helll are we worried about-throwing a pick? I really hope we play well at Nebraska. I am pretty sure they remember last year. Hope our guys are healed-I still dont buy the DS injury stuff. There is something else there.

Posted by BuffTime on November 16, 2008 at 11:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's funny because the whole game the announcer who was actually ON the sidelines with both teams kept remarking how there was an energy and a feeling among the Buffs that they could pull a win out (they were still positive even when they were down), while on the OSU sidelines he said there was a little bit of panic. Hmmm... maybe being ON the sidelines might give the best perspective.. But then again, I guess Hawk just paid off the ABC TV crew too.

I was at the game also, I thought our players acted like they always do (just my opinion)!

Announcers said we have lost over 100 games due to injurys for starters and backups, I understand your going to have injuries but over 100 games lost to them!! Wow!!

Remember buff nation we only have 2 senior starters on offense (Daniels and P Williams) whole bunch of sophmores and freshmen that will only get better!! 22 true and redshirt freshman have played this year for the buffs.

The future is bright for the buffs just not this year like we all would have liked!! Its not always going to be rosie just ask the huskers how its been since 62-36!

Love the buffs!!

Not a good idea to take away scholarships, most programs never do it. It sends the wrong message to recruits. Remember how much crap coach BZ took for it, even though it seems to have been the right move. His reasing was based more on charachter then performance though!

on a side note- Welcome to the board "truehusker" Very good post!!!!!

Hey luvnuts,

Joe Ganz is 6'1" 210?? Did you see what B.J. Beatty did to the predicted 1st round draft Okie States TE yesterday??

Its been a long year since 65-51

Love the buffs!!

FYI all, scholarships are renewed yearly, and a Coach with some guts could do what he has to do with non performers.

Hawkins is making over $1 million per year, and he does not get any "present" votes.

You're a classy guy don. Which top coach pulls scholarships for players who don't measure up again?

Posted by lobobuff on November 16, 2008 at 2:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

On pulling scholarships, name a coach that has done it. Once offered and accepted, hard to pull one, just based on pure gameday performance I would think.

On the impact of injuries, Darrell Royal said it best:

"All the white meat is gone. There's nothin' but necks on the platter."

A win in Lincoln is going to be difficult.

An extra week to mend bruised bodies and spirits.

Go Buffs.

there you are VK!! We got your back!! Dont let corndog and cornhead and cornbread and inbread and luvnuts tear up our buffs!! They havent had anything to cheer for since 62-36!!

Love the buffs!!

vk-you must be not only out of town but possibly in another galaxy if you think this team can beat anyone by 35. That is a three game point total for us. Husker fans-I checked your web site and it is very good (even has some pictures of girls that weigh less than 300 pounds). Why dont you stay over there so we can commiserate among ourselves?

Are you being serious luvdaskers, Nebraska has had for years the softest schedule in the big 12 besides Kansas St??

Next years non-conference schedule for the red,

Florida Atlantic
Louisiana-Lafayette
Virginia Tech
Arkansas State

Im surprised you guys scheduled Virginia Tech!!

Posted by montanabuff on November 16, 2008 at 4:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Greeley Buff

Nebraska's 2009 schedule is a minefield compared to 2010 (announced after Pelini was hired, by the way):

Western Kentucky
South Dakota State
Idaho
Washington

One game against a BCS team (Idaho doesn't count even as 1-A - zero winning seasons since moving from 1-AA; and Western Kentucky will joint 1-A next season), and that's against Washington, which will play against Washington State for the worst BCS team in the nation.

10 points to any Husker fan who can name the nicknames (without looking) of all 2010 four non-conference opponents.

Go Buffs!

62 - 36 Nebraska biatches! Corn fed and inbred. That's all you are and that's all you'll ever be. Obama is going to nuke Nebraska and I stand with him!

Does any really care enough about the schedule to make a big deal about it? Huskers win a few games and they think they should get some love? No one knows about strength of schedule until the season is almost up because of all combinations (check even the Big 12-first team to lose, OU, gets to win the South unless Tech wins next week). We could have probably used a couple more cup cakes this year. At least we finish with one.

What happens to the big 12 allotment of bowl slots if CU fails to qualify? Do they get an at large team or does the Independence bowl (or any bowl)get to pick who plays their other pre slotted team? I know we have a couple of readers that are plugged in and may have the data at their finger tips. Too lazy to research it. Jeez-I cant believe we are even talking like this. We were supposed to be contenders this year before all the kids got hurt. If nothing else Hawk has to take responsility for part of that. Too much of the wrong kind of work, too much exposure to injury. I cant believe we have to wait another year.

Schedules, smedules. Both the Buffs and the Huskers were 3-1 in OC games. Difference has been in conference play. Buffs haven't got it done. Huskers have.

Enough with the excuses. The Buffs, problems are well documented. We can argue all day about the whys, but in in a little less than two weeks, Buffs have one last shot to salvage their season.

It will be tough. They have not won on the road this year. Lincoln is a tough place to break that streak.

It can be done, but will require 60 minutes; a complete game. Something else they haven't done.

The odds say not, but, I like my kool-aide cold and gold in a black cup-holder.

Gooooooooooo Buffs!

BUFFS JUST GOT A 4 STAR JC WR. SHOULD BE A HUGE ADDITION FOR NEXT YEAR!

Posted by BuffTime on November 16, 2008 at 7:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hopefully he is putting his time in the classroom to get qualified like Moehler did last year. He's got good size and speed (6'3" with 4.45 40).

Anyone with a rivals account know who else visited this weekend? Scout just shows Stanjarivus McKay and Parker Orms (who also committed). Rivals says there were 5 visitors...

nolan i agree. our offense will look completely different next year and improve dramatically with talent but the biggest question of the offseason will be our QB situation and we need address our FG woes. I cannot stand Goodman and his cocky attitude. Why does he smile after every chip shot he misses! On the other hand with a healthy offensive line and some better WRs for next year I still believe Cody could excel and be an effecient QB, not a great qb but one that has the best chance of winning us games.

Posted by BuffTime on November 16, 2008 at 9:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

By next year I'm not so sure Cody will be the best available anymore. Hasen will have progressed quite a bit with the experience. Plus he has the spring to take in the playbook and the summer and fall camp to fine tune it. He's supposed to be pretty sharp and for sure has the raw tools.

Hawk has been clear that he doesn't like having more than one QB as the starter and Hansen adds a lot to the offensive options that Cody just can't. It will be an interesting battle for sure.

Let's get a few things straight. No Husker fan. Right. I grew up in Nebraska. I live in Nebraska. I bleed for the Blackshirts. Coach Bo should be the Big 12 Coach of the Year. He lost a D lineman before the season started. He lost a D lineman early in the season. He didn't get to use one of his top DBs, Blue, due to injury. Glenn, a converted RB to LB got kicked off the team last week. Dillard didn't play and the Huskers posted one of thier best efforts of the season at Kstate. This D is about to improve by 1200 yards off last year's squad. The Huskers have a great shot at 8-4. I didn't mean to sound like I presumed victory. That is the record I really wanted. If the Huskers keep it up, a win against CU is very possible. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. Also, come to the games and hear the OZ interview in which he tells fans to respect opponents. If you won't listen to me at least listen to the Dr. Tom.

So many injuries! This links to the strength and conditioning coach. Off season and in season work outs are to make sure players are strong and durable enough to make it through a season. The finger ultimately gets pointed at the head man for hiring this guy. I do think it is the injury bug, the bugs name is Jeff Pitman.

For Bufftime:

"All athletic scholarships, once awarded, are for one year only. It is up to the financial aid department whether or not they will renew your scholarship each year. It is up to the financial aid department whether or not they will reduce the amount or keep it the same. They must inform you of these decisions no later than July 1 each year for the following academic year.

If You Can't – or Won't – Play
Suppose, after you enroll and receive your scholarship, you get injured or otherwise become ineligible for competition? The financial aid office is free to reduce or cancel your athletic scholarship. This is likely to happen if you:

Lie on your application.
Accept non-scholarship money or gifts from anyone involved with the college.
Break the college's major rules.
Simply withdraw from competition voluntarily."

Don, where exactly did I say you "can't pull a scholarship"? I said you don't do it. Not for a kid whose only fault is that he has been having a tough time getting the kicks to go through in a game. It is a mental issue not a physical ability.

Hawk has kept his word when he has offered to a kid prior to them getting injured. That builds respect with recruits. They know that Hawk will stick with them for the long term and not just throw them out with the garbage when he feels like it.

Good luck getting recruits to sign with you if you a treating them like livestock. If you want to cut players at will then go join the NFL. This is College Football. They are amateur athletes and until they are allowed to switch schools at will (like coaches can) and without penalty then they should be treated as members of the team and school until they cross a boundary like Vaimounga recently did or fail to live up to their classroom requirements.

Again Don, you show your lack of class.
