CU's Roby invited to key NBA draft camp

Guard will showcase skills for scouts from every team

Mock draft.

Richard Roby chuckles on the other end of the phone when the two words come up.

"You could do a mock draft," Roby tells the reporter. "Anybody can make a mock draft."

And seemingly everybody does post their predictions for the NBA draft online as the top prospects prepare themselves for professional basketball careers this summer.

Roby, who flirted with the NBA after his sophomore season at Colorado, is projected as a second-round pick by most of the gurus.NBADraft.net has the 6-foot-6 shooting guard being selected No. 54 overall by the Houston Rockets in its latest mock draft.

The Camera's version would be much different due to a lack of familiarity with Henk Norel of the Netherlands and Ronalds Zakis of Latvia, the players the Web site has being taken at Nos. 53 and 55, respectively.

Roby understands that the first round is going to be dominated by the deep class of super freshmen, led by Memphis point guard Derrick Rose and Kansas State forward Michael Beasley.

But the Buffs' all-time leading scorer doesn't regret his decision to stay at CU for four years. Roby believes the collegiate experience as a whole and getting a chance to play for Jeff Bzdelik as a senior will help him realize his hoop dreams.

"I think it will. I'm ready to play and I've played for an NBA coach," Roby said. "I understand some of the little things that are going on in the game."

Roby -- who has been working out with professional trainers at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles this month alongside top talents like UCLA's Kevin Love and Arizona's Chase Budinger -- will have a tremendous opportunity to improve his stock next week. The former CU standout has been invited to the Orlando predraft camp, which runs May 27-30.

Executives from all 32 NBA teams will be evaluating the top draft-eligible players from around the world at next week's event.

"I get a chance to play in front of every scout, which will give me a chance to move up," Roby said. "All the scouts know I can score. They want to see me run the court and play hard defense."

Roby led CU in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg) during the 2007-08 campaign while improving his shooting percentage from 38.3 percent during his final season under Ricardo Patton to 47.7 percent under Bzdelik.

After playing against his peers in Orlando, Roby expects to work out for about 15 NBA teams at their facilities leading up to the June 26 draft.

"I'm trying to enjoy it as much as I can, but it is a stressful time," Roby said of the process. "You only get one shot to be drafted and there is a lot riding on it."

Roby skipped the April predraft camp in Portsmouth, Va., because he felt confident that he would be invited to the bigger showcase in Orlando.

Marcus Hall opened some eyes in Portsmouth with some impressive play but is currently on the waiting list for Orlando hoping that some higher-ranked point guards decide not to participate. The NBA will not release the official list of players who have been invited until Monday.
