That's the story for Colorado's version of the Fab Five -- a promising recruiting class that Jeff Bzdelik will be counting on as the head coach attempts to rebuild the Buffs from a Big 12 basement dweller into a consistent NCAA Tournament player.
On Tuesday, Bzdelik announced the addition of Ryan Kelley, a 6-foot-4 guard from Pomona, Calif., to the promising all-freshmen recruiting class that has included point guard Nate Tomlinson, forward Toby Veal, forward Austin Dufault and center Trey Eckloff since November.
"We are proud to welcome Ryan Kelley into the Buff family," Bzdelik said in a prepared release. "Ryan is an excellent student, possesses high character and is a young man who has a terrific basketball upside."
With the departure of up to seven Ricardo Patton recruits over the last year -- Jeremy Williams has gone home to Memphis and the 6-foot-7 forward's official status is expected to be addressed later this week -- Bzdelik should be able to implement his style of play without any resistance in the locker room during the 2008-09 season.
CU will probably bank the remaining two scholarships it has to use for this signing period, which runs through May 21, for next year's class unless an intriguing prospect enters the picture late.
Kelley, who is the nephew of former CU 1,000-point scorer Vince Kelley (1980-84), made an official visit to Boulder last week and has signed a national letter ofintent. He averaged 16.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists at Diamond Ranch High School as a senior and also received interest from Indiana, Gonzaga and Air Force.
Most of this freshman class is planning on spending parts of the summer on campus beginning course work and workouts with their new teammates.
CU returns two starters from last year's 20-loss team in sophomore guard Cory Higgins and senior forward Jermyl Jackson-Wilson.
Casey Crawford, who redshirted last season after transferring from Wake Forest, should be a force in the starting lineup this season. And role players Levi Knutson (hip) and Dwight Thorne (knee) are on track with their recoveries from offseason surgery.
The Buffs lose Richard Roby, the program's all-time leading scorer, standout point guard Marcus Hall and shot-blocking center Marcus King-Stockton to graduation. The third-leading scorer from last year's team, Xavier Silas, has transferred to Northern Illinois.

seems like a very solid core group of guys. 7-8 solid players and I love the fact that they are able to bank 2 scholarships. i would be a little worried if we had 7 freshman, not only for this year but 4yrs from now.

Don't think it will be a nightmare at all. Crawford is really good from everything I hear, Higgins will take over more of a scoring role and a solid group has a firm understanding of what Bzdelick wants to get done.

I predict the Buffs leading the Big 12 in assists next year with a main core of returning players that know the Bzdelik offense (with solid freshman class to back them up). I can see a healthy Knutson returning to his CO Mr. Basketball (07) form as he played through a tough injury that he fought all season. Thorne's knee is repaired too so balanced scoring from all 5 positions. The Buffs will finally over-achieve even if they are really young next year. Watch for Dufault contributing quickly too as he has a big frame and can shoot lights out.
