FSU loses starting OT

Florida State offensive tackle Daron Rose is ineligible for the season and will attend a junior college.

Rose, who started 11 games last season, will attempt to regain his eligibility, school officials said Wednesday.

Rose's departure is the second this week for the Seminoles. Sophomore linebacker Marcus Ball, another projected starter, was released from his scholarship Monday. Also, starting receiver Preston Parker is ineligible until he resolves a felony gun charge.

Delaney to Montana

Montana football coach Bobby Hauck has named Mick Delaney the new running backs coach for the Grizzlies.

Delaney is a Butte native who has been running backs coach at Colorado State for the past 14 years. Delaney worked for coach Sonny Lubick at both Montana State and Colorado State.

Notable

Junior forward Cheyenne Moore and freshman guard Miles Beatty have been dismissed from the George Washington men's basketball program.

Georgetown sophomore guard Jeremiah Rivers will transfer to another school, making him the second player to leave coach John Thompson III's team since the end of the season. Rivers, the son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, played in all 34 games this season, averaging 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds.

Florida International was placed on four years' probation by the NCAA and will lose scholarships for a variety of infractions. More than 40 athletes who competed for the school from the 2002-03 through the 2006-07 academic years violated rules, the NCAA said. The men's basketball program lost one scholarship and its baseball program lost 1.5. The football program was stripped of three scholarships. In all, 11 sports lost scholarships.

The NCAA has accused Alabama State of 23 rules violations, alleging widespread use of ineligible players, grade changes and recruiting misdeeds and charging the school with lack of institutional control. The NCAA's notice of allegations gave the university until June 27 to respond and culminated a nearly five-year investigation.

The alleged violations occurred from 1999-2003 and most involved the football program.

Newberry College president Mitchell Zais announced his school will retire its "Indians" nickname, although he still disagrees with the NCAA's stance against the moniker. The college will simply be known as Newberry College starting in 2008-09 until a new nickname is selected.

Former Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton resigned from his position at the school, a day after he was charged with marijuana possession, driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run. The charges came about a week after the 31-year-old was hired as the school's assistant director of player personnel.

Tennessee coach Pat Summitt has hired former player Daedra Charles-Furlow as an assistant.

Dawn Staley, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, will leave Temple to become the women's basketball coach at South Carolina.

Quarterback G.J. Kinne, who was fourth on the depth chart at Texas, transferred to Tulsa.

Eli Holman, the center who left Indiana last week after throwing a tantrum in new coach Tom Crean's office, will enroll at Detroit Mercy.
