Top hoops recruit to announce decision today
CU, Memphis, Florida, Texas among Witherspoon's top five
The Colorado men's basketball program will find out today whether or not it will be able to experience some May madness and land one of the nation's top prep prospects.
Wesley Witherspoon, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Lilburn, Ga., will announce his college choice during a signing day ceremony at his school.
CU is listed among his top five. The other candidates are Florida, Memphis, Texas and Virginia.
Witherspoon was the only player to participate in the Jordan Classic all-star game on April 19 at Madison Square Garden who had not yet committed to a college program.
CU head coach Jeff Bzdelik and his staff could use some good news from the recruiting trail after another offseason of attrition at home.
Xavier Silas and Caleb Patterson will transfer after the semester. Jeremy Williams, a talented forward who redshirted last season for academic reasons, could also be leaving Boulder.
That leaves the Buffs -- who also lose their top two players from last season in seniors Richard Roby and Marcus Hall -- without much depth or experience.
Bzdelik will welcome freshmen Austin Dufault, Trey Eckloff, Nate Tomlinson and Toby Veal to the team next season. All four signed in November.
Veal, a forward from Savannah, Ga., is considered to be a top 150 prospect. CU had a verbal commitment from another Peach State peach in Ebuka Anyaorah, but the gifted guard decided to stay close to home and will play for Georgia.
Rivals.com ranks Witherspoon as the nation's ninth best small forward prospect from the Class of 2008. He averaged 18.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as a high school senior.
According to various recruiting Web sites, CU is also trying to land Isaac Sosa, a 6-3 guard from Boca Raton, Fla. (by way of Puerto Rico), and Jarvis Jones, a 6-2 guard from Memphis.
If Williams leaves the program Bzdelik would have four scholarships available for this signing period, which ends May 21.

This would mean as much to the basketball team as D. Scott means to the football team. To beat out Florida, Memphis and Texas would be huge!!! Plus freshmen have a bigger impact in basketball then they do in football.

The film on this kid is sick. It would be a unreal pick-up for Bzdelik - can't wait to hear.

Sure would be a sweet pickup for Buzz. I think the Sosa kid sounds good too. Add those guys with the current crop of recruits and C. Higgins and I think the BBall team is in very good shape. GO CU!!!

I'm from Memphis and a huge Memphis fan, but obviously my first loyalty is in Boulder. I really hope he chooses CU, but if not it better be to Calipari.

I would be extemely surprised if this kid came here. I think we have a better chance at the Sosa kid. He's visiting CU with his Dad this week and Sosa might be ready to make an on the spot decision if he likes CU.

Is this kid good enough to get instant PT at Memphis? I wouldnt bet any money on it.

He signed with Memphis. With Derrick Rose & Chris Douglas-Roberts going to the NBA, he should get PT.

I'm not worried about Bzdelik as a coach. I hope, however, he isnt too proud or shy to pick a few recruiting pointers from Hawk.
