CU draws one more home game

It looks like the Colorado women's basketball team is staying home for spring break.

After the Buffs defeated Gonzaga 82-68 on Monday night at the Coors Events Center in the second round of the WNIT, tournament officials announced that CU would host a third-round game on Thursday against Villanova at 7 p.m.

"It's huge. Some of the girls, the younger ones, they want to travel," senior Jackie McFarland said after scoring 21 points and grabbing nine rebounds. "But I love the Coors Events Center. We've never been here during spring break and it's nice to just be able to focus on basketball."

Attendance for Monday's game was only 1,666. But that was good enough for the WNIT to make the Wildcats (17-15) -- whose men will be playing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament -- do the traveling to Boulder.

Villanova, which finished tied for 11th in the Big East, beat Wisconsin 60-54 in Madison to advance to the third round after opening the tournament with a 53-52 home victory over American.

McFarland milestone

With her first field goal of the game, McFarland passed Tera Bjorklund (2000-04) for second on CU's all-time scoring list. She has 1,878 points for her career, which trails only Lisa Van Goor (2,067) in program history.

"More than anything, just looking at the players that I passed is the crazy thing for me," said McFarland, who is averaging 18.0 points per game this season. "Numbers don't mean a lot for me ... but some of the players that I passed I remember watching when I was in high school and middle school thinking they were great."

Nice win! It's great to see the Buffs respond to an opportunity to keep playing. Let's get another one!
