JC guard Clanton won't be joining Buffs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jeff Bzdelik is still looking for shooters.

At least two of them.

Colorado's head coach is going to announce, perhaps as early as today, that one of the five recruits he signed to a national letter of intent in November will not be joining his program after all.

Javonte Clanton, a 6-foot shooting guard who played at Blinn (Texas) College this season, will be looking for yet another school to transfer to. He was reportedly dismissed from his junior-college team last week by Steve Spurlin after the Blinn coach learned that Clanton planned to leave early for spring break and would miss playoff games.

Clanton averaged 10.5 points per game at Blinn, including a high of 24 in a victory over Tyler (Texas) Junior College, which was ranked No. 7 nationally at the time. He originally signed with Div. I Niagara but only played in four games and left the program after a legal issue.

Bzdelik, who kicked sophomore guard Xavier Silas off CU's team last month, suddenly has two scholarships to use on prospects this spring.

"I believe the culture is changing every day," senior guard Richard Roby said when asked about the changes Bzdelik has made since taking the job last April. "Everybody learned a lot this year and it was a learning process for a lot of guys, even veterans like myself. There is still a lot to be learned."

Bzdelik didn't comment on his decision to part company with Silas and said he won't comment on Clanton until CU issues a press release on the matter.

Aloha new schedule

Bzdelik is close to finalizing his nonconference schedule for the 2008-09 season. CU will play in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu during Christmas break and will host Colorado State and TCU at the Coors Events Center.

The Buffs will also face Stanford, Tulsa, SMU and possibly Alabama on the road. CU will not play Bzdelik's former team, Air Force, or Wyoming next season.

In the Big 12 the Buffs will host South Division foes Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M; and will travel to play Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

And in 2009-10 the Buffs will participate in the Maui Classic.

"I think our scheduling is exciting," CU athletic director Mike Bohn said. "We're going to go play in Hawaii two years in a row. The second year we're going to play in the premiere preseason basketball tournament in the entire world. For Colorado to be represented there, again, that's a reflection of Jeff and his willingness and desire to play against the best teams."

Notable

Roby became CU's all-time leading scorer with 2,001 points. Ironically, the player he passed, Donnie Boyce, also set the career scoring record in a conference tournament loss to Oklahoma on March 10, 1995. Boyce broke his leg in that game. ...

Former Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe was in the stands at the Sprint Center to watch the coach he fired (Bzdelik) and replaced with George Karl. And, presumably, to scout future NBA talent should he land a new job. ... Roby and Marcus Hall combined to make 13 of 28 shots while the rest of the Buffs were 5-for-24 from the field. ... The Buffs are the only team in the Big 12 not to have won a game in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament (0-9).
