Zikova wins slalom title; Buffs second at NCAAs

Pioneers move past Colorado for team championship

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Colorado senior Lucie Zikova won her second women's slalom NCAA title and the third skiing national title of her career on Saturday.

Earlier this week Zikova won the giant slalom, adding to her national title total after winning the in slalom two years ago.

Zikova ended her career with a CU record seven top-five, first-team All-America performances in eight races in the NCAA championships.

"It was a really great course, I went out there and had a lot of fun," Zikova said of the slalom. "I was a little nervous on the first run so I didn't ski as fast as I probably could have and on the second run I really had nothing to lose. I just went all out and it worked out."

The Buffs couldn't hold their slim lead in the team standings of the 55th annual NCAA championships at Bridger Bowl.

Colorado led by 17.5 points heading into the final day of the championships, but the University of Denver alpine skiers gave the Pioneers valuable points to vault into the nationaltitle. Denver was first with 649.5 points. Colorado was second with 619. Rounding out the top five were Utah (585), defending champion Dartmouth (546) and Middlebury (529).

It was the 12th time in NCAA history that DU and CU finished in the top two.

"I think this was a good championship and now that it's over, I'm happy with a second-place finish," CU coach Richard Rokos said. "DU did a great job all week and they delivered and I have to congratulate them."

Overall, the Buffs won four events this year, with the other two wins coming from Maria Grevsgaard earlier in the week.

"Having two double-winners, I don't think that it happens too often," Rokos said of Zikova and Grevsgaard, who won both women's Nordic titles. "Lucie had an unbelievable career. (In the) three years she skied for us and she pretty much did everything that she could possibly do. And Maria has something that none of the other racers could match, and we get her another year."

Four CU skiers wrapped up their careers at these championships -- Rachel Roosevelt, Zikova and Nordic racers Lenka Palanova and Kit Richmond. Over the four days, seven Buffaloes earned All-America honors, five first- and/or second-team and two second-team honors.

Sad that the Buffs wound up second, but the team did well overall. Seven all-Americans, and four first place individual finishes is a great weekend. CU was well represented in Bozeman, and received nothing but praise from the locals. Richard Rokos runs a class program with exceptional athletes. Thank you, seniors, and good luck to the rest of the team next year in Maine at the '09 NCAA championships!
