Grevsgaard claims 2nd NCAA title
Buffs reclaim lead at NCAA Championships
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Maria Grevsgaard earned her second national title in three days to help the Colorado Buffaloes vault back into first place at the NCAA Skiing Championships on Friday.
The Buffs, who were third after Thursday, racked up 201 points, giving them 483 for the meet heading into today's men's and women's slalom competitions.
Denver is second with 465.5 points. Utah (429), Dartmouth (412) and Middlebury (401) round out the top five.
The team leader after three days has gone on to win the NCAA crown the past 13 years in a row. But the Buffs' lead is a precarious one because they will race one skier short today since they only qualified 11 of the possible 12 positions. Denver skied one competitor short Friday in losing the lead.
"We have to ski well, diligently and fast," CU head coach Richard Rokos said of today's competition. "It's kind of a deadly combination, because to ski fast, we have to take chances.
"Second place is not the preferential scenario. We just need to focus and go for it. Anything can happen in slalom, and one team's misery can turn into another team's gold."
Grevsgaard's win in the women's 15K classical race led a CU contingent Friday that saw all six of its Nordic competitors finish in the top 11 to wrap up top Nordic team honors. This is the third time in five years that the Buffs have come away from nationals as the top Nordic squad.
The title was Grevsgaard's 11th of the year, tying her with Line Selnes for the CU record for most wins in a season. The win also extended Grevsgaard's school mark of most career wins to 19.
The junior dominated the field Friday, finishing in a time of 55 minutes, 4.6 seconds, almost 55 seconds ahead of runner-up Polina Ermoshina of New Mexico.
"This was actually one of my hardest races," Grevsgaard said. "Even though it looked like it wasn't, I was sure that they were going to catch me on the second lap. But then I got some more energy and made the gap bigger."
CU posted five All-America efforts in all Friday.
Senior Kit Richmond finished second in the men's 20K classical -- 12 seconds behind Alaska-Fairbanks' Marius Korthauer -- to join Grevsgaard as a first-teamer.
CU freshman Jesper Ostensen (6th) and sophomore Matt Gelso (9th) earned second-team honors on the men's side, while senior Lenka Palanova placed 10th for second-team honors on the women's side.
The slalom races begin with the women's first runs at 9:30 a.m.
