McConnell-Miller would go to WNIT

Buffs head to Nebraska today for last road game

Should Colorado be asked to play in the Women's National Invitational Tournament, the Buffs would not only accept, but they would put in a bid to host games.

Colorado plays its final road game of the season at 1 p.m. today at Nebraska and its final home game against Missouri on Wednesday.

The only way the Buffs (15-12 overall, 4-10 Big 12) can make the NCAA tournament is to win the Big 12 tournament, which starts March 11 in Kansas City.

If Colorado doesn't pull off the upset and win Big 12 tournament title, the Buffs will likely play in the WNIT.

Colorado coach Kathy McConnell-Miller, who twice was in the WNIT as coach at Tulsa, would put her Buffs in the tournament this year to gain the kind experience teams such as Kansas State and Wyoming gained last season.

Wyoming won the WNIT in a home game that was a sellout and defeated K-State in triple overtime in the semifinals. Colorado beat Wyoming and split with K-State this season.

"I'm not settling for anything at this point, but you have to look at last year," McConnell-Miller said. "Wyoming and K-State are both in the top 25 now.

"There's a real value to the postseason, in particular with a group here where, with the exception of Susie Powers (transfer from Notre Dame),not one of them has been to the postseason. And any postseason is valuable."

Colorado is looking to maintain its momentum, heading to Lincoln, Neb., having won two of its last three.

The Buffs face a Nebraska squad (18-10, 7-7) that is trying to avoid being knocked out of NCAA tournament consideration. The Cornhuskers have lost four of their last five since beating Colorado 80-71 in Boulder on Feb. 6.

In that game, Nebraska held CU standout Jackie McFarland to one point by double-teaming her with two strong forwards in Kelsey Griffin and Danielle Page.

The Buffs hope to handle it better and find open players such as forwards Aija Putnina, Caley Dow, Courtney Dunn or Kara Richards when McFarland is double-teamed.

Dow came off the bench and played 30 minutes in the last game against Nebraska. She finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists against no turnovers.

"The big thing heading into Lincoln is to focus on the little things," Dow said. "They're a smart, well-coached team and they do a really good job of getting the ball into the post and boxing out on every play."

Also in the first game against Nebraska, sophomore guard Whitney Houston came off the bench and was having a good game, scoring 10 points and leading the offense, but she struggled down the stretch with numerous turnovers.

Since then, Houston has been handling the pressure down the stretch if in the game for Powers.

"I don't think our bench was as effective then as they have been lately," McConnell-Miller said. "We're much better now at keeping people fresh."

You can't substitute tournment experience - it's definitely worth it and who knows - maybe we shake some trees!

Let's go Buffs!
