KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- We might have already seen one of the best coaching decisions of the 2008 college football season.
There are bound to be some bumps in the road this season for the Nebraska football team under new head coach Bo Pelini, but this transition won't be nearly as dramatic as the last go-around.
When Bill Callahan moved to Lincoln four years ago from life in the National Football League, he pulled the plug on one of the legendary systems the game has seen. He switched from the power running attack that kept the Cornhuskers on top for most of four decades to his version of the West Coast offense.
Pelini derailed any similar sea change last winter when he chose to retain several of Callahan's offensive assistant coaches, including offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. The continuity that decision created figures to put the Cornhuskers in the mix immediately in the Big 12 North Division this fall.
"Everything from the mental side is a review for us," senior offensive lineman Matt Slauson said. "Our playbook hasn't changed. A little bit of the terminology has, but really it's the same stuff."
Nebraska's problems last year were almost entirely defense-oriented. The Cornhuskers finished the year ranked ninth nationally in total offense and 28th in scoring offense, averaging 33 points per game. They just couldn't keep opponents out of the end zone.
Big Red scored more than30 points seven times in 2007 but lost three of those games. They scored at least 39 points in each of their final three games when Joe Ganz took over as the regular starting quarterback but lost twice in that stretch.
Ganz proved to be a playmaker, despite some critical errors along the way. His second half interception returned for a touchdown by Jimmy Smith in Boulder turned the momentum in Colorado's favor, but Ganz never quit. The Buffs won a shootout 65-51 and went on to a bowl game while the Cornhuskers went home.
If Nebraska had anything resembling a competent defense in the game, the Buffs might have watched the bowl season on their couches for the second straight year.
Ganz didn't have to spend the entire offseason learning a new playbook, signals and calls. He was able to focus on improving his weaknesses and expanding his understanding of everything Watson wants to do.
Ganz said the experience gained from starting the final three games will be invaluable this year because he learned important lessons down the stretch in 2007. He said there were several games in which he tried to make plays that weren't there to be had instead of taking what was available.
"Coming into my senior year, I should be a lot more mature," Ganz said.
Pelini always has been a defensive coach, spending time with three different NFL franchises as well as jobs at Iowa, Oklahoma and Nebraska. He said keeping Watson's offense in place helped him quickly understand what his team will be doing because much of the terminology is the same as what was used by the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers when he worked for those organizations.
While the offense has it easy when training camp opens next month, the defense will be completely overhauled. That might cause some problems early in the year, but how could the defense be any worse that last year when it allowed Kansas to score 76 points?
"We've kind of put the shoe on the other foot now," Pelini said. "I'd rather it be that way because I knew we had a lot of work to do on defense, and a lot to build there and a lot of teaching to do.
"You know, having coach Watson and knowing the offense is in good hands and having some continuity and having the players hearing the same things --- for the older kids three or four years in a row --- is going to help us. I didn't want have to re-do both sides of the football."

OK, this is ridiculous! I give two farts about nebraska.
C'mon man. Where is the buff news? Instead i gotta read about every other team.
i guess i will talk to you fellas after the 31st!
You know its bs when a buff publication is spewing out articles like this!
Their has to be news on the buffs. Anything?

I completely agree. No one in Buff Country care about the Fuskers....except of course, he should not be named. Nebraska is going to get completely destroyed this year, and while I will relish every loss, I don't read the Buffzone for Fusker news. What about an article about the Buff Defense?
Posted by CaliBuff on July 25, 2008 at 7 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I like to hear a little about the other teams. I have some interest in a Buff reporter keeping us up to date on other Big XII teams and other North teams especially. He can give us a Buff Fans' perspective on those teams. Just don't tell me you buy into the fact that they will win this year, because we all know that is a bunch of BS.

Come on tall, it is way too early to start drinking...at least 9 wins? If you are lucky, you guys may have 5 wins. All of your "easy" teams are going to play you tough. The Fuskers mystique is gone, and all your opponents are going to be looking for some payback.
Personally, I can't wait to watch the Buffs crush the Fuskers at home. We already hold the record for the most touchdowns scored by a single player, Chris Brown. It would be nice to hand them their worst loss ever!

Nebraska will go 5-7 this season, graduate their average QB and good RB, then go 4-8 in 2009. The local yokels will quickly turn on Bo and he'll be fired.
The new coach that replaces Bo will inherit all the 2 star prospects that Bo is currently piling up and Nebraska will go 3-9 in 2010.
62-36 and Callahan killed that program.

"I would not be surprised if NU was 8-0 going into Norman" - Really, tall? Virginia Tech, Missouri, at Texas Tech in games 4-6. Crow all you want about the 'Huskers starting 3-0 against the bottom feeders of the WAC, but 8-0? At least TRY and be credible ....

Nebraska 2008 schedule:
Western Michigan: W 38-28
San Jose St.: W 43-31
New Mexico St.: W 50-35
Virginia Tech: L 17-59
Missouri: L 10-55
at Texas Tech: L 21-74
at Iowa State: W 40-28
Baylor: W 49-28
at Oklahoma: L 3-51
Kansas: L 28-40
at Kansas State: L 24-27
Colorado: L 31-42
Like I said Talli, NU goes 5-7 in 2008. The Texas Tech and Oklahoma games will be blood baths.

think it is iteresting that all the Nebishes think Bo will vastly improve their crummy defense..unless I have missed something, he has basically the same lousy performers from last year..try all the nifty schemes you want, but without talent the results simply won't change..with luck maybe 6-6..can't see how even Pellini can screw up the first 3 games..

shoot, tall is being way too conservative.
I think the pusskers will go undefeated and win the NC even before the season is over. After the 1st quarter of the VT game when they have taken half the hokie team off the field on stretchers, everyone else on their schedule will forfeit out of fear.

Sorry, guys, but it's a little shaky to post a comment saying you don't want to read about Nebraska ON A STORY ABOUT NEBRASKA.
Of COURSE we CU fans want to read about Nebraska, just as CSU fans want to read about the Buffs. And any "news" this time of year about CU is not likely to be good, if you know what I'm saying. We'll have all the puff features about CU all of us can eat over the next few months.
Anyway, I do find it interesting that the "old" Nebraska truly is dead and gone, that even Bo won't try to bring it back. That's the underlying message of this story.
Posted by extrapoint on July 25, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)
of course not
Cosgrove never adjusted or tried to diguise anything.
Still ...I have seen better tackling by women at department store sales.
2 things have to happen. Some wideouts have to step up. Lucky wont be so lucky this year if he is the only target.
and the Bo somehow has to make his defenders more afraid of him than downfield blockers.

one more thing
I would suggest they make Watson the D coordinator as well against teams like tech
Posted by SnowBuff on July 25, 2008 at 10:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Tall did you even read the article? Watson is keeping Callahan's offense almost exactly the same. Only a few of the terms have changed. Just wait, Callahan was calling the plays last year (he is nothing if not a decent Ocoordinator at time). Watson calling the plays is a whole different kettle of fish. Get ready for massive misuse of talent and a complete lack of gameday coaching. That man coaches one good game a season and the rest goes with vanilla crap.
Posted by BuffMan6236 on July 25, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
They will run the ball a lot more this year.
But Watson is our sloppy seconds from the Barnett era and is not a very good coordinator.
We all remember Joe Klatt running out to the right and throwing to a receiver five yards up the field. Watson called that play, oh, 32,000 times here at CU. No imagination, no game day adjustments of any value. He's all their's as far as I'm concerned.
Posted by BuffNut99 on July 25, 2008 at 11:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)
O_Really, how does it feel to have no friends?
Agreed BuffMan, Watson is not a very good coordinator. 4 yd outs to the TE and a cloud of dust.
Nebraska would be wise (and much more interesting to follow) if they reverted to a power run game. Husker fans, don't be tempted by the stats you put up last year... if you pass alot, your D is going to be on the field alot regardless, which translates to trouble for NU...
Posted by edawg on July 25, 2008 at 11:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Um, O-Really, I don't think that anyone forgot CUs last two seasons. Also, what is this about CU being a player again? They play in the Big XII, the division is up for grabs again. So what is your point exactly?
Posted by SnowBuff on July 25, 2008 at 11:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Nice how you conveniently forgot to mention our main point that the offense HAS NOT ChANGED. Those new recruits will still be on the bench even if they learn the offense because...
YOU HAVE SHAWN WATSON AS A COORDINATOR. Good luck with that. He is the most predictable coordinator out there. I was calling 2 out of 3 plays based purely on down and distance as a sophmore in college.
Get ready for lots of screens, runs, and completely incomprehensible fakes and reverses at awful points in the game.
Posted by bufffan8 on July 25, 2008 at 11:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Let me see if I can get this straight. O_really is so insecure about his huskers he/she needs to come to other teams sites and post. Bwahahahhaa - who's the loser o_really?

O-really - if CU = losers how does it taste to give up 65 pts to losers? Nice 2-6 conf record record by the way. And what bowl was NU in last year? Oh that's right - they didn't qualify for a bowl game. bwahahahhahaha.
Posted by bufffan8 on July 25, 2008 at 11:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)
ShortAl - Obviously playing teams like NU we didn't have to do anything else on O to put up 65 pts. Wait - I think both KU and CU just scored again!

changing the subject again tall? Coward.
Posted by oz_in_cali on July 25, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)
You guys are way too kind to Watson. I, quite frankly, have no idea what he is doing allegedly running an offense of a D-1 NCAA program (maybe he mixes a mean martini).
Doesn't anyone remember how, on the day Texas took us to the wood shed in the Big12 final, Shawna was repeatedly sending out the following play sequence, down by 50!:
1st)TE out = 2 to 4yds
2rd)QB rollout = sack or drop -5yds to no gain
3rd)Run off tackle = -2 to 2yds
4th)punt.
So, talliwacker is right when he says that Nebraska plans on simplifying the offense (to about 4 plays - guess which ones).
The only reason that the bugeaters offense was at all productive was because Callahan was calling the plays. With Watson calling the offense, and a group of players every bit as suspect as anything he had in Boulder, we are going to see just how bad an offense can be.
The hair still stands up on the back of my neck thinking about how much I dreaded knowing Shawn Watson was calling our offense (my 5 year old nephew picks better plays on NCAA 08). What better place to watch him practice his ineptitude than in Lincoln.
I will say it here and now, that Pellini's first season in Lincoln is going to look a lot like Hawk's first in Boulder. They will be lucky if they win 4. I also predict that Shawn Watson will not be the Nebraska Offensive Coordinator in 2009.
GO BUFFS!!!

Bingo
Me and whoever was sitting next to me in the stands would pre-call the next play correctly almost 75% of the time in any of the games. The 25% of the time we were incorrect it was always one of the others mentioned above.
Some of the apologists, Barnett included, used to say we cant do all that other stuff because we dont have the personel capable of doing it. At some point during your failure you might as well find out by trying.
Then there was Jeremy Bloom. Hate to sound like a broken record (like tall or rs) but Bloom was basically used as a second string receiver when he wasnt returning kicks. I remember very few times he was allowed to stretch the D on a pass route....inspite of a couple of very successful times.
Posted by SnowBuff on July 25, 2008 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The one time we concentrated on Bloom while he was here, Hodge broke a passing record. And we had the longest play from scrimmage in CU history.
One good game a season from Watson. In regards to the above, never ever forget the screen pass on 3rd down. If we didn't run it off tackle or a slow developing draw (invariably into a blitzing MLB), it was a screen.
Posted by oz_in_cali on July 25, 2008 at 12:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Don't even get me started on the whole Bloom thing and the way Watson was afraid to go downfield. Especially, down 50. Like I said, even my 5 year old nephew knows enough to go down with a fight when you are down big. SnowBuff hit it right on the head in saying "...massive misuse of talent and a complete lack of gameday coaching. That man coaches one good game a season and the rest goes with vanilla crap".
Congratulations, Nebraska, on having yourself the "Most Offensive" Offensive Coordinator in the NCAA, because that guy stinks.

Another embarrasment was one of our games against CSU 3 years ago. They ran the bubble screen to both sides of the field 7 out of 10 plays in a row and made serious yardage with each one.
Posted by RalphieWyoWyo on July 25, 2008 at 12:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I remember that line, "we don't have the personel to do that stuff." "We are who we are".
What a joke.
Watson would show times of brilliance, Klatt's game against CSU, 01', 02' versus NU. Other than that we booed him many a time for play calling.
Prove us wrong NU fans. It will be 3rd and long and a play will be called that is designed for 3-5 yards and it will go for no gain.
NU defense will show great spirit at the beginning of the season, especially after a horrible non-conference schedule. But after couple of games against real foes, they will lose spirit like the last few years.

Speaking of talent wasting, there is a certain FB who is now the #1 FB in the NFL playing for the Browns that is an absolute freak of nature.
He was lucky to get 5 touches a game. FIVE. Usually it was 1-2.
His name? Lawrence Vickers. The man is a beast.

I just might put Vickers on my fantasy team bench on general principle. Him and D.J. Hackett (yet another talent that underachieved under Watson).

Hey Talli, I posted the Nebraska schedule for 2008 earlier in this thread. Please walk me through this 9+ win season you predict.
Start by going to the part where they play VT, Missouri and at Texas Tech. You know as well as I do that they will open as double digit underdogs in Vegas for all three of those games. NU fans will mindlessly bet that line down then watch their life savings end up in the pocket of some Vegas Greaser.
If they win 1 of 3 in that stretch, most football folks will be shocked.
At Oklahoma... Come on…
Kansas: Didn't they score 76 on NU last year. Don't they return their QB.... Highly unlikely NU wins this game.
KSU away... Too bad that is not a home game for NU, I would have given them the win if it was.
Arguing who will win the CU vs NU game is pointless on this site.

Ya wally, its something stolen from Allbuffs. They did the good work. Another, more important stat is this: 65-51 with 14 garbage points for NU. Even if Watson was callling the plays all year (he wasn't) and designed the offense (he didn't), CU is going to have a better offense this year then last year.

(this is why old tommy passed on bo the first time around, talk about "sloppy seconds".) he is not smart enough to beat mangino, and has no ablity to establish the espirit d'corps needed to lead a team to the next level as "ceo" of the cornhusker nation corp. this, of course, is simply my personal, unfettered opnion.

You know, up until reading through this article's comments (and granted I have not read every comment in every single article since he started posting), I thought tallisal might not actually be a Nebraska fan. Just someone trying to be a little more grounded (occasionally some of his points were close to being valid) and less blindly optimistic than everyone else. But after what I've read today, I'm leaning towards believing he/she is a Nebraska fan like nO_RealFuture simply trying to make CU fans doubt their team and their love for it. (Personally, I'm not the blindly optimistic type. I prefer to look at facts and make a decision, then maybe season that with a touch of optimism. I have no problem with people offering views that aren't blowing with the current winds, it's good to read a different opinion. It makes you think. But there is a line between basing things on facts and being antagonistic, and we don't need the latter).
salligal and nO_RealFuture, go away. Otherwise, I'll be happy to just ignore you.
"Buffoons"? Good one, boy. I think the people who live here, the alumni of our University, the football players who *qualify* to play at this University, nor CU's academic reputation need any defending from attacks by imbeciles in a place where the state tree is a stalk of corn, the state flower is a piece of corn, the state bird is a scarecrow, and the academic standards for the "higher" educational institutions allow, well, people from Nebraska to get in. (OK, fine, sorry, it's not fair to indict the entire state or even all the fans based on the behavior of just a few of these chumps).
Anyone recall the montages up on BuffVision during the '01 game? That was classic. And so true. How about the piece ESPN did on GameDay a couple of years ago about Nebraska fans? I actually felt *sorry* for them, I would have been *humiliated* if that were about me and my fellow fans. They had people saying things like, 'When they [NU] lose a game it just hurts me down to the pit of my soul,' and, 'It just feels lahk the world's comin' to a end.' The *only* thing those poor, pathetic people have is NU football. So I can understand why they would come to another program's site and make horribly pathetic attempts to disparage us, our town, our University, and our football team. Bwa-ha-whatever.
And to the many who said Watson was a bad OC, I wholeheartedly agree. I was so frustrated during his tenure watching bad call after bad call. Yep, let NU have him. I hope he *does* do the play calling. Also, SnowBuff, thanks for the note about Vickers, I don't keep up with the NFL very well. Nice to know he's doing good. That forearm smackdown he did in the endzone against CSU in '05 earned a spot in my memory. I've never had anything against CSU, but after Van Pelt's spike to the facemask, they had it coming.

My adrenaline and testosterone absolutely go off the charts when I see Vickers grab that poor CSU DB WHILE holding the ball, WHILE running into the endzone and absolutely throw him violently into the ground. I also remember that same day when Sypniewski got hurt during a play, after being helped up with his helmet off he turned and pointed to a CSU player as in "you are dead!" Totally pumped up the crowd.

Why would someone that hates CU football waste her time on this site? Senility setting in? o_really - based on your pathetic bwahahahah - i took you for someone much younger - or much less mature than your age.

were Gantz and Daniel separated at birth?
Gantz is telling us how comfortable they were with Bo. He sure didnt look all that comfortable or enthusiasitic in his delivery. I hope for the pusskers sake it was only stage fright.

"They have never consistently posted a winning team or tradition". Hey O_Really, are you really that ignorant? Do your homework! Here are a few stats for you.
* 20th Best record since 1989
* 17th all-time in wins
* 2nd most Big XII division titles
* 11th most road wins since 1988
* 1 of 23 schools to have won nat'l title & have Heisman Trophy Winner
* The best mascot in history of college athletics
* Won 7 of last 11 bowl games
* Only 6 schools have more bowl wins than CU since 1990
* Only 7 schools have been to more bowl games than CU (18) since 1985
* 141 of 209 games (67%) have been broadcast regionally or nationally
* All time record of 658-419
* 10th all time in most consecutive weeks ranked in AP and/or Coaches poll
I'll top there. Maybe if you focused your time on the things that you like instead of the things you hate you'd be a happier person.

Talli wrote: "NU wins against VT and MU... TT will be a toss up..."
That was good for a belly laugh, but Talli NU has same chance of winning those three games (even one of them) as San Jose St. and SW New Mexico Tech have of beating Nebraska earlier in the same season.
All are possible, none are remotely likely. Again, enjoy the soul crushing 5-7 the Huskers are about to embark upon.

Maybe because the only time he/she/it shows up here is when the topic is the once mighty red.
That and the ridiculous BWAA-HA-HA!, otherwise known as the collective bawling post 62-34.

the only good thing about 2006 was knowing that 2005 was definately over

Seriously neb_cu_buff, either you have EP confused with someone else or you've been living in corn country so long the fumes are getting to you. I've been reading and posting here for a while now and have never even remotely seen EP show symptoms of the corn disease.
