Buffs fourth in preseason media poll
Missouri unanimous top pick in North Division
IRVING, Texas -- Colorado's third-place finish in the Big 12 North last year evidently isn't enough to convince the conference's media that the Buffs are improving.
The Big 12 preseason media poll, released Wednesday, picked the Buffs to finish fourth in the North, behind Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.
Missouri was the unanimous favorite to repeat as the North winner, with Oklahoma receiving all but two first-place votes in the South.
Kansas State and Iowa State were picked fifth and sixth in the North while Texas (two first-place votes), Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Baylor rounded out the South.
The picking of OU and Missouri is certainly no surprise.
The Tigers return 17 starters off of last year's 12-2 team that tied with Kansas for the North title and lost to Oklahoma in the conference championship game. MU finished the season with a win over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl while Kansas defeated Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
The Sooners, who last year became the first team to win consecutive Big 12 titles, return 11 starters from an 11-3 team that lost to West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Big 12 finished last season with four teams in the final top 10 of the Associated Press poll: Missouri (3), Kansas (7), Oklahoma (8) and Texas (10).
Maybe the biggest surprise in the Big 12 poll was the selection of Nebraska to finish third in the North. The Huskers finished just 5-7 last year and 2-6 in the Big 12, a record that cemented the departure of beleaguered coach Bill Callahan.
Still, Bo Pelini's team finished with 183 points in the poll, just ahead of Colorado (181).
The Big 12 Championship game is set for Dec. 6 at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium (6 p.m., ABC).

No way we finish behind the cornmunchers. I can't wait for the season to start so we can start winning some games!

Wow! I can maybe understand Mizzou and Kansas being up there after last season, but the bugeaters with a first year coach in 3rd? I guess it just shows that the media types are easily infatuated.

Preseason predictions are just someone's opinion, which I certainly don't agree with. CU has always been the classic underdog. I think this is the best place to be coming into the season. Win games and the rankings will take care of themselves. Go Buffs!!

What a bunch of morons. Nebraska is going to be absolutely dreadful this year. It will be interesting to see how the coaches predict the North this year. The Buffs are the 3rd best team on paper in the North, if they play up to potential they will finish 3rd (and 1st in 09). Go Buffs

Rest easy Buffs brethren, this story is from last year. All the writer did was cut and past in last year's story which predicted THE EXACT SAME THING...if not a worse finish for us.

college prediction "fluff" mags and "blue chip" recruiting mags are for the tabloid sport fans. our history has shown how much credibility those so-called experts errrrr idiots have with true college football fans. just ask the ex-busker coach cally the clown how important magazine ratings are. most thought his sorry teams would win mutiple big 12 titles and look how many husker "blue dip" recruits fill NFL rosters-LOL. AND OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS you would think that a so-called "top-tier" program with 500,000 thousand blind sheep husker fans at their spring games-you mean i mortgaged my farm for season tix to watch this garbage???, having 25,000 "blue dip" recruits on the sidelines for the OU game, olympic style locker rooms with gold plated weight rooms, 23 practice fields, musical toilets and 750,000 sold herbie heads would account for more than a few misly wins over a sorry michigan and a tired, and CU still went to the big 12 title game, barnett team---OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS!!!!! keep in mind this is the only time of the year that busker fans feel good--other than the omaha john deere rally...here's a couple of predcitions- bo becomes the third nu coach in recent years fired after being destroyed, once again, by colorado. "BO MUST GO" "WE WANT TURNER" signs start to appear at home games. bo gets charged with assault for knocking down iowa state cheerleaders and beating up iowa state special teams coach after losing to cyclones. osbourne the coward agrees to become head coach if conference goes back to big 8-"i just cant play those big bad texas schools" and we hace to take colorado off the schedule-"that game has gotten the last 3 coaches fired, dagnabit". of course with 6 home games to start the season including omaha tech and kearney city college i understand their rankings. its truly just sad and pathetic what a joke that program has become, i wonder what happened???? oh yea---that 62-36 "titanic" that sunk the program that could never sink happened. RTD episode II COMING SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have them right where we want them, thinking CU is a 4th place team... hahaha ;) But when we win at least one of if not both of our games against FSU and WV, then they will know the truth.
So let's enjoy being the under dog for a few, before they see the real deal. By then it will be too late, CU will be kicking some butt.
Just like what happened to OU and NU last year.

Oh and anyone who still wants to read and comment on an interesting story, go farther down to the QB lawsuit, under other football.

Other than switching CU and Nebraska, that list looks about right for a preseason poll. MU and KU deserve the acclaim after their respective performances last season.
Post season will look like this:
1. Missouri
2. CU
3. KU
4. KSU
5. NU
6. ISU

salsjohn.
You sly dog, you tried to slip CU 2 spots while talking 1 spot.... But, I like it better ;)
I know that games are played for a reason and that if we already knew the out come they wouldn't be played.
I believe CU could win all of their games this year....
But, as I said before they play them for a reason and that's what makes them fun to watch.
But, I like your list as a maybe. I'm also betting that we can beat NU and finish higher then NU....
Calling NU a University sounds so... how do you say it?
Tell me Tallyboy.
How many students that are non athletes come to NU from out of state, many less then CU. AND how many pay as much as CU’s out of state students pay?
That's what I mean by university.

Too early on this string to really let it fly but just wanted y'all to know I am still in the game and still reading. Any one care? My fabulous insights are coming. I did enjoy the use of the word "dreadful" however. I think Kansas stumbles this year-it's the Chinese year of the doughnut last I checked. Mizzou is chalk and we get them back to back with A/M on the road-nice schedule. I thought the Halloween game was our birth right!?! WTF?

I am thinking that salsajohn's prediction is pretty close to how the north will shake out this year, but we still have to look at scheduling there. Nebraska still isn't playing the type of schedule that will get them into alot of trouble. They will probably take it in the shorts again when the big twelve gets ahold of them, but there is a chance the husker mania will be running rampant after the 1st 4 games. I like seeing Colorado on tv as much as they are because of their scheduling, but it sure would be nice to see them coast through the 1st 4 games at home (much like the mother huckers) and come into the "real" season fresh as a daisy. As far as the early season predictions and sports magazines go, if I remember right Nebraska was supposed to finish just behind Missouri last year, and the buffs were supposed to be there somewhere in the last 2. And thinking back, a couple of plays here or there could have meant finishing 2nd in the big 12 north, and 3rd overall.

A compilation of eight preseason magazines/websites has the Buffs third, the Cornhuskers fourth:
http://www.cuatthegame.com
I guess too many in the midwest media have been drinking the Pelini Kool-Aid. Unless Bo is going to play linebacker, a fast start by Nebraska (Bo doesn't have a road game until mid-October, and even two of those games - Virginia Tech and Missouri, very well could be losses), will deteriorate over the course of the remainder of the Big 12 schedule. The Buffs, on the other hand, are set up for a fast finish. Look for these two teams to be heading in opposite directions come Thanksgiving weekend.
Go Buffs!

Well said, Montana.
Stringing early wins against pitiful opponents might help in the confidence department but BoP'll be at midfield for a post-game meltdown when Missouri and Tech roll around.

Talli... you should be getting used to this broken record. Bo and NU lost out on yet another recruit last night. Nathan Scheelhaase, a top QB prospect from St. Louis, chose Illinois over Nebraska and a few other Big XII schools. That makes Bo something like 1 for 40 on winning recruiting battles this spring/summer.
And unlike NU's future QB bust/transfer Cody Green, this Scheelhaase kid can actually pass and doesn’t have torn ankle ligaments.

I know I already posted this yesterday, but Darrell Scott has arrived. He will be at the next 7 on 7s. Kind of surprised no articles on this yet. The kid is 6-2 215+ and runs a 4.38 forty and thats not news worthy? But I guess the news staff is more concerned about digging up info on the football staffs salaries.

Rivals released an updated Top 15 prospects for Colorado yesterday - looks like there was a pretty big dip in talent from last year. Other than Kasa, Jack Harris and Gregory McGhee look like the only other prospects who could be legitimate four stars.
I thought Jeremiah Sirles would draw more attention but it seems like he has fallen off a little.
Posted by salsajohn on July 17, 2008 at 8:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The best part about Nebraska losing all these recruiting battles is that the Huskers are not losing to the likes of USC, Florida or Texas. They are losing head-to-head battles with schools such as ASU, Illinois, Rutgers and Oklahoma St. The Huskers even lost out to Wisconsin for the services of the best high school OT in Nebraska.
I love it.

Kenneth, what is "playing tiem"?
Posted by rodrigo on July 17, 2008 at 8:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Exactly salsa.
The point isn't that Nebraska gets a kid here or there, it's that Nebraska used to be able to get any kid it wanted. This year virtually all of the top 30-40 qb recruits were off the board before Nebraska picked up Green, who is pretty far down that list.
Seems to me the top recruits no longer want to play at Nebraska.

That is stupid Tall! recruits would rather live in a great town and play for a charasmatic coach then worry about facilities.. Facilities are abouth 5th on the list in importance.

I think it's more that top recruits no longer want to play for Nebraska. With greater parity in the sport, other programs - in more attractive geographic locations - emerge as potential places to play. Nebraska can no longer just show up in states like New Jersey, Missouri, Arizona and Illinois and pluck kids away from local or nearby schools.
Let's face it: given a choice of playing for a program in the middle of cornfields whose tradition is fading into the history books - remind me: when was the last time Nebraska won the Big 12? - kids will choose Austin, Tempe, Eugene, hell even Norman (where at least the winning continues) or State College and South Bend (where tradition still matters because there has been more recent success) before Lincoln.
Posted by RalphieWyoWyo on July 17, 2008 at 9:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Proof of these rankings and Vegas shows that there are still people in this world that give Nebraska the benefit of the doubt because of tradition.
Notre Dame does have way decent and they put them in the top 5 and then get spanked by USC just like NU.
Where does reality come in.
Based on all this, NU players start believing they are actually good and then they get their butt's kick and then pack it in like the last couple of years.
Posted by shoulder2shoulder on July 17, 2008 at 10:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Gents- Vegas makes lines and win/loss estimations on what they feel the public will throw $$$$ at. There are still enough people that hear the name Nebraska and assume they will still be a top team and bet on them (Vegas makes a killing on them). High school kids and coaches are a lot smarter then your average gambler and do more research. They know Nebraska is falling and no longer wish to attend!
Posted by Saheeb on July 17, 2008 at 11:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Rodrigo: Good points, but I'm still surprised at how Nebraska continues to get kids just based on tradition. They haven't been good for a while, but they continue to get pretty good recruits. It's going to take another five years or more of poor seasons, in my opinion, for them to be out of the limelight long enough for there to be a dearth of who grew up watching them on TV in big games, etc. for them to truly fade. They still get kids just because of tradition and past glory. A few more seasons of futility will start to really detract from that. That, plus perenially playing a laughable non-conference schedule will start to bite back at them. Playing Tulsa, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, etc. if you're having weak seasons every year isn't going to get kids excited.
Posted by BuffTime on July 17, 2008 at 11:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I think Nebraska's current draw (what little there is) has more to do with the fan and booster support than tradition. Husker fans still treat the players like stars. Some kids put more weight into that than what impact it may have on their potential to play professionally or after football life.
I prefer kids who take pride in putting in hard work and winning games and pushing themselves to get better than kids who need a lot of ego stroking even when they aren't very good.

the article failed to mention that Bryant, prior to the game, sarcastically asked..."who is Bobby Anderson?"
This because they had a running back named Johnny Musso they were grooming for the Hiesman and hyped to the whole nation. After the game the question could have been asked about Johnny.

We here at CU may not have the illustrious PAST that Nebraska has, but don't have the delusional hang-ups of past conquests either. We have no illusions of past glory (1990 was nice, but let's face it, it has been the exception not the rule), but instead have our eyes on a future that looks so bright we may have to all don welding masks before it's all over.
