New Jersey signs Roby

Ex-Buff standout signed by former Nuggets GM

Richard Roby finally got his first break in the NBA on Tuesday.

Fittingly, the former Colorado standout was signed by Kiki Vandeweghe to play for the New Jersey Nets' summer league team at the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City beginning July 21.

The current Nets' general manager helped Kenyon Martin, Roby's half-brother, prepare for the 2000 NBA draft after the talented forward broke his leg during his final season at Cincinnati. K-Mart was the No. 1 overall pick and later signed a lucrative long-term contract in Denver when Vandeweghe was the Nuggets' GM.

"Looks like we finally figured it out," a relieved Roby told the Camera on Tuesday. "It's just going to feel good to get back out there on the court."

Roby, who went undrafted last month, could have been a second-round pick had he not broken his shooting hand at the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando on May 29.

CU's all-time leading scorer says he's ready to start competing for a full-time job in professional basketball.

"My hand is feeling really good," Roby said.

The Nets have been busy this offseason, drafting three players (Stanford center Brook Lopez, Cal forward Ryan Anderson and Memphis guard Chris Douglas-Roberts) and trading Richard Jefferson (to Milwaukee for Chinese center Yi Jianlian). If there is a position of need on New Jersey's young squad it is shooting guard.

"I haven't even really looked at their roster," Roby said.

Douglas-Roberts, Maurice Ager and former Nuggets' draft bust Julius Hodge are among the guards on the Nets' summer league team that will play in Orlando prior to the Rocky Mountain Revue.

Roby, who is only signed through July 25 and can become a free agent after the tournament, will arrive in Salt Lake City on July 18 to begin the audition. The Nets open play against Golden State three days later.

Roby led the Buffs in scoring (17.0 ppg.) and rebounding (6.7 rpg.) last season and became the first player in program history to score 2,000 career points at CU.

He will surprise.
He has also paid his dues. Who knows what he and the Buffs could have accomplishd with a decent coach for his first 3 years.
