Polk quickly dazzles Buffs
4-star recruit chasing Scott for top RB position
Hecklers figured to be a part of college football Ray Polk would have to confront at some point in his career. He didn't expect the first to be the starting quarterback of his own team during summer workouts.

There was Colorado signal-caller Cody Hawkins yelling across the practice fields Monday evening at the sturdy young running back from Arizona. Polk stood near the sideline looking into the evening sun following seven-on-seven work patiently listening to a photographer.
Hawkins joked through shouts from 30 yards away about the former four-star recruit being fast, so fast that he already found the media spotlight. Of course, the opposite is actually true, the spotlight found him.
Polk has made quite an impression on his new teammates because of his speed since he arrived in Boulder last month. Veteran players asked to identify the most impressive rookies almost universally mention him.
"He's fast as (expletive)," senior linebacker Brad Jones said. "He's definitely going to be competing as soon as camp starts."
Here is the thing about that: Polk is "that other guy" among the three running backs signed in the 2008 Colorado recruiting class. The cream of the crop is supposed to be Darrell Scott, the playmaker from Southern California who made his official announcement about where he wouldplay college ball on national television on national signing day. Scott was the No. 1 running back recruit in the nation.
Friends have joked with Polk in the past month introducing him as Scott to those who don't know either just to see the reaction they can get. Polk said he has met some people who actually have referred to him as "that other running back" when he has introduced himself on campus.
But while Scott remains at home in California working out on his own, Polk and fellow freshman Rodney Stewart are quietly getting a leg up on him in Boulder, learning the offense and familiarizing themselves with teammates, the town and the school.
"It definitely is a motivation," Polk said of the buzz around Scott. "I mean, I've got nothing to lose. So I might as well go all out and do what I can do. It really hasn't gotten to my head at all, but there is like that side where you're building that quiet confidence and you know when he gets up here, all you guys are going to do is push each other.
"It's been really good because I'm in the easy seat. He's coming in as, you know, the top running back. He's expected to do something. I'm chasing. It will be fun."
Polk and Scott have never met and haven't talked on the phone, but they will get to know each other well in the next year. They are supposed to be roommates their freshman year.
Polk is finding the transition from high school to college a little easier than he expected. The most difficult part so far has been getting used to the altitude. He said he hasn't felt any homesickness at all and was eager to return to Boulder during a recent trip home to the Phoenix area where he attended high school at Brophy Prep.
Having familiar faces around has helped. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Blake Behrens was a senior at Brophy Prep in Polk's junior season. Sean Lieb, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver who also played at Brophy, will walk-on with the Buffs this fall. Lieb is already in town participating in summer workouts.
Like most freshmen, Polk had doubts about how well he might do when he first joined the team. Polk said being in town and involved with workouts this summer has given him a sense of confidence heading in to training camp next month. He played in a similar offense last season using signals from the sidelines to call plays and rarely huddling.
"I'm not being cocky or anything, but I think I can keep up with these guys, and I think it's only going to get better," Polk said. "You know, as a freshman, you're coming into a new environment and some of the first practices I had were with the team playing full team.
"You know, you make a play and you figure, 'Hey, I can do this. This isn't so bad.' "
With three freshmen running backs this fall joining a cast that already includes scholarship tailbacks such as Demetrius Sumler, Brian Lockridge and Corey Nabors, someone figures to redshirt. Polk said he needs to add some weight to his 6-foot, 195-pound frame, but he hopes to play right away.
"I love surprising people."

Hey Talli. Your Huskers lost another recruit to Kansas (that’s two this week) and one to A&M. "Bo don't know recruiting"! He is losing as many recruiting battles as he will games in 2008. How does Nebraska going 5-7 sound? Then they lose their QB & RB with no one in the wings. Make it 4-8 for the Huskers in 2009.
Restore the order! Ha ha...

I have a feeling Polk is going to shed that "other guy" label very quickly. This guy can flat play, and he is, in all likelihood, going to be one of the top 2 backs on the roster by the end of camp.
You can never have enough team speed, and if Scott and Polk can share carries, defenses will have a hell of a time keeping up when we've got an awesome one-two punch coming at them all game long at altitude. There have been some great running backs that have played in a 2-back system in addition to the ones mentioned above: Clemson's Spiller & Davis, WVU's Slaton & Devine, Auburn's Ronnie Brown & Cadillac Williams...

We are already talking about a 1-2 punch with Scott and Polk?
Let us not forget that Demetrius Sumler was only a redshirt frosh last year and had a real nose for the endzone. Sumler may not run a 4.4 but he is hard-nosed and durable. He did break all of Reggie Bush's high school records too.

Love this quote from the Texas newspaper reporting on the Josh Williams robbery case: "This is a real good kid that got into a situation,” Boling said. “I’ve spent three or four weeks with him and his mother, and they’re fine people." Love the "this is a good kid that GOT INTO A SITUATION." Yeah, a "situation" where he decided to hit and rob a guy of $900! That's not getting "into a situation," that's being a violent criminal using force to steal. This guy quoted makes it sound like Williams was cajoled or pressured into something he didn't want to do. What a load of crap! I guess after spending a few weeks crime free with Williams was enough to convince this savvy individual that Williams is a good kid. I hope he's right and that Williams has learned and will be a straight shooter from now on. But please, spare me the rationalizations....

Real Tall
If Hudgins or another guy can put a consistant serious rush on the QB, we have the backers to do a 3-4.
Inspite of your opinion of Hawkins, I doubt if he will be as blockheaded as Cosgrove and never change a thing inspite of giving up 45 plus every game.
When you are defending the spread, you want to give them as many looks as you can and disguise the real coverage because they often change their routes after they line up for the snap.

And we aren't switching to a full time 3-4. We are just going to tinker with it to play with our strength at linebacker.

Dear no point I regret to inform you that there are no proven colligate offensive playmakers on the current roster. Can you name any? So before you go out on a wing and name how quick an Offensive lineman’s belly giggles or how quick the punter gets the punt off, and embarrass yourself anymore. I would like to make an argument on your behalf. The buffs will be good for other reasons like solid Defense and clock management and simply out lasting there opponent. So with all due respect Mr. no point shut up.

RTbunchofnumbers,
You might have a point as of July 9th. But CU's lack of "proven colligate" (whatever that is) playmakers on offense will cease to matter approximately 60 minutes into the 2008 season.
My sense is that by the time the final seconds tick away at Invesco Field on Aug. 30, future opponents - especially those with the pleasure of playing at altitude - will be wondering what to do to stop the herd of no-name, young Buffaloes running up and down the field.

rs is fairly easy to figure out. Obviously he started a fight with a football player, got his can whipped and wont blame himself.
Tall's vendetta is a little harder to figure. I doubt if even Barnett would be childish or churlish enough to blame the next coach. Of course Barnett does have enough time on his hands to be Tall.
I also doubt if it is a player Hawk dismissed. Playrs are young, flexible and ususally get over it and move on. Of course it could be a player who couldnt move on....to another team or school and has a lot of time on his hands.
I think I have it boiled down to 2 possibilities. It is either Barnett's wife or the janitor that missed emptying Hawks trash can 3 times in a row and got his ash canned.

According to the Dallas News Big 12 predictions, if Bo goes 5-7 with all that talent I would say he is on the hot seat.
I know most coaches don't get on the hot seat their first year, but come on, they have soooooo much talent in Stincoln. All those 4* defensive players and Bo's amazing head coaching abilities had better translate to a top 25 defense. Pair that with Heisman lock Joe Ganz and the world best offensive coordinator Shawn Watson.
Add all this with delusional expectations of Fusker Nation and I would say Bo will be on the hot seat his first year. Also, rumblings on Nebraska football boards that Bo can't recruit. Uh oh!!!!!!
5-7= epic fail for Nebraska football in 2008

Backpedal a little faster, bud.
But since we're on the topic of 2009, here's a thought for our Husker friends to chew on:
nine seniors starting on offense in 2008
six seniors starting on defense in 2008 (punter's a senior, too)
second-string qb and second string tail back have zeros on their stat lines.
Y'all better 1) hope you get it done this year cuz the future looks bleak; 2) hope Ganz and/or Lucky make it through the season cuz the second-string look like deer in the headlights.

Read the hot seat link. Since when did the Texas game get moved to Austin? I have tix for that game so I hope I don't have to travel. Assuming CU starts 2-0, the WVU home game will set the tone and direction of the remainder of the season.
Posted by rodrigo on July 9, 2008 at 9:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)
...only four of the five seniors on o were starters last year
your senior tight end has issues with the bottle and has five catches in his illustrious career
one of your starting linebackers, a senior, was a tailback until this spring
your backup linebackers have yet to record a tackle (all three combined)

Kirk Ferentz - Iowa (no way they fire him)
Gene Chizek - Iowa State (only been there one year - he's safe)

"Comments posted here are encouraging - when fans of opposing teams start posting about how a player is too small, (LOL - he's not 5'11, he's 5'9 - priceless!) too slow or simply a "daddy's boy", the Buffs are doing something right. Why should they care?
Buff-haters have reason to be nervous - CU has an elite 11 QB (who won the accuracy competition btw) behind center for what may turn out to be 3-4 years. It's not just the driver either - the young WRs will also impress - again, for 3-4 years. Let's hope that slow, short "daddy's boy" doesn't slap your team down. How embarassing would it be to lose to a runt?"
Yes indeed, Nebraska and Oklahoma: how embarassing to lose to a runt!

Ballenger will get plenty of time this year. He might even get to play the entire second half against the Huskers in mop-up duty since it will be out of reach for Bo and his flock by halftime. Got to rest Cody for the bowl game. NU...not so much.

The QB starter could, and should, be anyone other than Cody Hawkins! Starting your own son at QB sends the message that we at CU do not play fair. The message is clear, at CU, it apparently matters more who you know (or more accurately: who you're related to) than how good you are.
Posted by BuffsIn2007 on July 9, 2008 at 2:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Good grief, Daddy. Anyone who has watched practice knows Cody's the best CU has right now.

talli, Ballenger has some potential, but he's clearly No. 3 right now. Nelson looked quite a bit better than Matt during the spring.

Cody Hawkins > Joe Ganz
Posted by WhosYourDaddy on July 9, 2008 at 2:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Even if Cody were the best QB (which he clearly is not) I still don't think he should start at CU as long as his father is the coach. As I've said before, if Cody is so good why wouldn't he play somewhere else were the spector of nepotism isn't hanging over him for his entire career?
The answer is that he clearly could not have played, at another BCS school: small, slow, weak-armed QB's just don't play at that level.
Posted by baBUFF on July 9, 2008 at 2:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
You don't get first team reps in practice just because you're 6'5" - you have to earn them by outplaying the starter which, as anyone who's seen the QBs play this spring knows, hasn't happened. Cody has been the best.
Hey Whos, remind me again who Nebraska's new Defensive Coordinator is?? Oh right, Carl Pelini from NW Alberta Polytechnic School for Girls. Nice hire, but I'm worried it sends the wrong message. Get lost.
Posted by nwbuff32 on July 9, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
"small, slow, weak-armed QB's just don't play at that level"...Are we talking about the same kid that beat OU, TTU, kNU, and CSU? I guess the Hawkins clan must have had relatives refereeing these games because nepotism is the only way this kid could be successful.
Posted by baBUFF on July 9, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Clearly Carl could not have coached at another BCS school, So Bo gift-wrapped a job he didn't deserve, right?
Posted by bufffan8 on July 9, 2008 at 3:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Tall - you didn't answer my question. If you haven't been to any scrimages or practices where you have seen the three QBs play then just say so. What facts do you have to state that Ballenger would be the starter if he had more reps? You haven't even seen him play once.
Posted by rodrigo on July 9, 2008 at 3:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Now it's clear.
Dan coaching Cody is nepotism.
BoP hiring CarlP is not.
Riar Geer is a criminal and should be suspended at CU.
Josh Williams is misunderstood and will likely see significant playing time at Nebraska.
I knew the Blackshirts were history at Nebraska but I didn't realize all other standards went out the window with them.

Daddy - who should the starter be and why?
Posted by bufffan8 on July 9, 2008 at 3:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The funny thing is Carl Pelini has the title of Defensive Coordinator, however Bo is going to run the defense and Carl will focus on the D-line. So, DC pay with D-line responsibility. Talk about nepotism.
Posted by baBUFF on July 9, 2008 at 3:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I can't wait for the natives to get fired up about Bo hiring his brother when their defense is getting lit up early in the season. Call it a victory if they hold Tech under 70.

Daddy's quote - "The answer is that he clearly could not have played, at another BCS school: small, slow, weak-armed QB's just don't play at that level."
What do you have to say about Todd Reesing at KU and Chase Daniels at Mizzou? Small, slow and weak-armed but both schools finished in the top seven nationally.
If you go to a practice and actually see what's going on, Cody is the leader of this team. That was particularly evident at the spring game and especially during non-coached summer workouts.

I honestly think a lot of the people you guys are calling huskers are not huskers. They are Buffs that refuse to pretend as if we have all the right pieces in to place. I sure hope they get into place now. Not two years from now or three. Our record speaks for itself and it pisses me off and it should piss you off.
Im still waiting for anyone to name one proven coligate playmaker on offense.

hungry mangino at ku was on the "hot seat" for three seaons. he sat down an athletic 6'3" qb for a 5'9" player. and, with a 12-1 season, he is now the toast of k.c., and the rest of the nation, to boot. (national coach of the year) it happens.

WhosYourDaddy and Tall are definitely two different persons. WhosYourDaddy is a one-trick pony. I am not at all impressed by his football acumen. The only thing that he knows how to do is to play his nepotism card, and he does this poorly. WhosYourDaddy, do you realized that when Cody graduated from high school he was judged and evaluated by independent observers to be one of the 12 best QBs in the nation? Nepotism played no part in this evaluation. As a result, Cody was invited to the prestigious Elite 11 QB Camp where he excelled in showing his QB skills and talents. As a matter of fact, he was judged to have the most accurate arm of all the QBs in that camp. And that camp was absolutely loaded with QBs who have subsequently become stars for big-time college programs. To name a few, there was Tim Tebow of Florida, Josh Freeman of Kansas State, Juice Williams of Illinois, Jake Locker of Washington, and Matthew Stafford of Georgia.
On the other hand, Tall is a real football junkie who spends an inordinate amount of time reading football related stories on the Internet. His head is filled with football statistics and artifacts. Tall is only here to stir the pot and draw attention to himself. This is his immature and perhaps only way of getting his jollies out of life. In reality, Tall does not really believe in half of what he spews out on these message boards. This makes him a very disingenuous person.
Hey Tall, do I have you pegged, or what?

Ok, rtbunchofnumbers, I'll go. It's July. Right now, it doesn't matter. You don't win games in July. It'll matter in September, October and November. Would it be nice to have Tim Tebow, Knowshon Moreno and Jeremy Maclin lining up for the Buffs? You bet.
But many have faith that Cody Hawkins, Sumler/Lockridge/Scott/Polk, Josh Smith, Simas, Celestine and maybe even Patrick Williams will emerge.
We understand you don't. So we disagree. Repeating your opinion five million times won't make us change our minds.
The Buffs haven't played a down yet and you (real) talk like they've already lost seven games.
Man, with fans like you who needs Huskers trolling around.

The only statistic that counts is W's & L's
The best QB's are smart, can lead, have heart, and avoid mistakes.
8-4 or 9-3 is a realistic goal for this years BUFFS, a bit wet behind the ears and we still need to see the running game improve not just talk about it.
It took a certain Bill McCartney a few seasons to get the Buffs into the National Title race. With this years baptism under fire, I believe the next few years could be very promising.

real - who said we have all the right pieces? If we had all the right pieces we would be saying that nothing short of a 10+ win season would be expected. The majority of the posts simply say we have a lot of good, young talent and we are anticipating a very good year. That's the optimistic view. You tend to look at things with a glass half full attitude which is your right. Although not a very good way to go through life I might add. Most posters are optimisitc, you are pessimistic. Hopefully you will be wrong.

I would say that over 3,000 yards passing, 22 td's is acceptabe for a first year starter.especially, With a inexperienced line and an inconsistent run game.
And yes 17 interceptions is too many. But are we talking about a veteran?

Flabuff - good point about " would say that over 3,000 yards passing, 22 td's is acceptabe for a first year starter.especially, With a inexperienced line and an inconsistent run game."
any consistency in the run game would have added wins and there were far too many blown routes and tipped balls to put 17 int's on the QB alone. Really, 5-6 of those had nothing to do with the QB at all
Cody will be this year's Reesing\Daniel. Then everyone can act suprised, but they shouldnt be

hey rtbunchonumbers,
Here's what Tom Luginbill had to say of Nebraska's new signee (I'll highlight some important parts for you):
"IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE CORNHUSKERS TO GET A DYNAMIC PLAYER LIKE GREEN TO CREATE SOME EXCITEMENT AND POTENTIAL MISMATCHES. THIS IS AN OFFENSE THAT NEEDS PLAYMAKERS AND GUYS WHO CAN CREATE BIG PLAYS and Green is a step in the right direction as Nebraska works elevate back into college football's elite programs."
Unfortunately, though it sounds like his real upside is a wide receiver. Question in Lincoln remains: whose gonna be behind center in 2009 and beyond?
