Ex-Buff Kara Goucher claims U.S. women's 5K title

Former CU star Slattery finishes fourth

EUGENE, Ore. -- With 100 meters left in Friday night's 5,000 meters, Kara Goucher took off and sprinted to the forefront of the American Olympic movement.

The former University of Colorado star qualified for Beijing for the second time in cinematic fashion by winning the 5K at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. The athlete with movie-star looks, likely to often grace NBC's Olympic coverage, crossed the line with her hands up in celebration as the Hayward Field crowd roared with appreciation.

"The way this whole meet played out, with achieving goals ... the whole meet has been amazing," said Goucher, who finished in 15 minutes, 1.02 seconds.

Goucher already qualified for the 10,000 meters a week ago to earn her first Olympic bid. But she had never won a race at a major meet as a pro and wanted to show she was not content with just one event.

"I wanted to win. That's why I came back in the five," she said. "I just tried to zone out until the last lap."She was with fellow Olympians Shalane Flanagan and Jen Rhines for the last three laps but burst away as she pulled in front of Hayward Field's famed grandstand. The rising roar of the crowd seemed to power her through the line.

But Goucher's night wasn't all smiles. Her husband, Adam, failed to qualify in the 10K after her race and she briefly broke into tears during the press conference.

"I was really, really happy until about 10 minutes ago," she said.

Goucher said she would like to run the double in Beijing, but said she would drop the 5K if she did only one race. That could open the Olympic door for another former Buff.

Sara Slattery finished fourth in Friday night's race and is the Olympic alternate. She would still need the Olympic "A" standard but was confident she would get that before the Games.

"I'm going to prepare like I'm the alternate so I can be prepared to be on the team," said Slattery, who finished in 15:188.88. "I think I can get the 'A' standard."

Slattery also finished strong despite being behind the top-three pack. She was part of a group of six that led for most of the race and outdueled Lauren Fleshman to have a solid chance at Beijing. Both Rhines and Flanagan also have qualified in other Olympic events and could drop the 5K.

Goucher was well ahead of Slattery and didn't have to sprint to qualify for her second event. The 5K isn't even Goucher's top race. But she saw a chance to win and took it.

"With 200 meters to go I was kind of worried (about the pace), but it was just kind of one of those moments," she said. "I thought, 'I just got to risk it.' "
