Buff soph Putnina suffers broken finger

Colorado sophomore starting forward Aija Putnina suffered a broken pinkie on her right hand during CU's 59-41 win over Kansas on Tuesday.

Putnina broke her finger on the last play of the first half and also reported having difficulty breathing.

The Buffs are off today and return to practice Thursday. Putnina will wear a splint in practice on Thursday to see if she can play with a splint. If she can't, she's expected to be out one to two weeks. The Buffs next play at Texas Tech on Saturday.

With Putnina out, freshman Courtney Dunn came off the bench and played the entire second half, netting career highs in points (9) and minutes (25), while tying her career high for rebounds (5).

"I'm not going to let it get to my head," Dunn said of her numbers. "I know there's always going to be other opportunities."

Tough week

In addition to trying to end a three-game losing streak, two players this past weekend were told that one of their grandmothers died.

One of freshman Chelsea Dale's grandmothers passed away last Thursday and one of sophomore Whitney Houston's grandmothers passed away on Sunday. Dale was informed of her grandmother's death on Friday while CU was at Kansas State.

Houston will miss Saturday's game at Texas Tech to attend the funeral.

"Every day was an adventure, it felt like," CU coach Kathy McConnell-Miller said of telling her players that their loved ones passed away. "We just knew we had to get back on track."

Notable

Former Buff Lauren Lubin participated in the Frontier Airlines shooting contest during a second-half timeout. Lubin made the layup, free throw and 3-pointer, but not the half-court shot. ... The combined 100 points was the lowest scoring game in the 60-game series between CU and KU, surpassing the previous low of 105 points. ... The 18-point margin of victory was the largest in a Big 12 game in McConnell-Miller's time at CU.
