Three Buffaloes grab victories at regional
CU will send 11 to NCAAs
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Maria Grevsgaard notched her ninth win of the season and 17th of her collegiate career to lead the Colorado Buffaloes to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships title on Saturday.
With the meet doubling as the NCAA West Regional, Grevsgaard's victory capped a day in which the Buffs wrapped up 11 of a maximum 12 qualifying spots for the NCAA championships.
The senior claimed the women's 15-kilometer classical race in a time of 53 minutes, 42.61 seconds to add to her school record for career victories.
Racing on the same courses as will be used for the NCAA championships in two weeks, CU finished with 555 points, 28 better than runner-up Utah. Denver was third with 497.
The regional title was the Buffs' ninth under head coach Richard Rokos.
Buffalo senior Lucie Zikova won the women's slalom and Kit Richmond won the men's 20K classical, pushing CU's total number of individual victories this season to a school record-tying 17.
Zikova's 14th-career victory came thanks to a dominant second run in which she leap-frogged leader Malin Hemmingsson of New Mexico. Zikova finished in 1:32.51, while Hemingsson finished second in 1:33.32.
Junior Lenka Palanova also added a podium finish, placing third behind Grevsgaard, while freshman Jesper Ostensen was third in the men's Nordic race.
The Buffs earned the maximum three qualifying spots for the NCAAs in women's alpine, women's Nordic and men's Nordic, but managed only two in men's alpine -- though they do have the second and third alternates in men's alpine.
That means CU will be able to count only 22 scorers at nationals instead of the maximum 24.
