CU alumni teams battle to tie

Mandy Nightingale took a charge on one play. On another play, she ran the triangle with Di Spencer and took a handoff from Spencer on her way to the basket for a classic layup from back in the day when she was a Buff. Tera Bjorklund and Lisa Van Goor exchanged elbows in the paint. Former teammates Randie Wirt and Sabrina Scott defended each other.

And each play ended with a smile.

That's the way the women's alumni game went before Saturday's contest between Colorado and Texas in the Coors Events Center.

"It was a lot of fun," said former CU coach Ceal Barry, who coached one of the alumni teams. "More than anything, that's what it was about."

Barry's team trailed most of the way, but Van Goor's putback with two seconds left tied the game for Barry's team and time ran out on a 32-32 tie. Van Goor played at CU from 1981-85.

"If there's anyone who should have scored the last bucket it was Lisa," said Gail Hook, a former Buff who coached against Barry. "If she was a player now, she'd be an All Star in the WNBA."

Another streak

snapped

In addition to halting a six-game losing streak on Saturday with a 67-52 win over Texas, the Buffs brought to an end its losing ways against the Longhorns.

Colorado snapped an eight-game losing streak against Texas. The Buffs hadn't beaten the Longhorns since a 79-75 win on Feb. 19, 2000, and it was just CU's fourth win ever over Texas.

Texas, meanwhile, remained winless on the road this year against Big 12 teams.

Smith's big night

Bianca Smith's seven 3-pointers were a career high. In tying the school record for most treys in one game, Smith put her name next to Kate Fagan's, Annan Wilson's and Veronica Johns-Richardson's. Fagan twice in her career had seven 3-pointers in a game.

Smith took a career-high 14 shots from 3-point range for 50 percent shooting. She was also 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Smith came into the game having played 40 minutes the last time out and 38 minutes two games ago.

"Truthfully, it was the amount of trapping and pressure by Texas," CU coach Kathy McConnell-Miller said. "They had to leave somebody open. That was Bianca. When they left her open, she was going to hit that."

Notable

CU freshman Brittany Spears, who had scored 21 points, 19 and 19 in her last three respective games, was held to 3 points. But she had 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. ... The Buffs had 14 assists on 18 field goals. ... The Buffs made all 12 of their free throws in the last 2:22 of the game to hold on for the win.
