Buffs aim to halt skid vs. Texas

CU has lost six games in a row as Longhorns visit

Kathy McConnell-Miller hopes today's matchup against Gail Goestenkors goes better than the first two times the women's basketball coaches met.

McConnell-Miller's Colorado Buffs host Goestenkors' Texas Longhorns in today's 7 p.m. "Think Pink" game to raise awareness about breast cancer.

Back when Goestenkors coached at Duke, her roster included Iciss Tillis of Tulsa. So the Blue Devils played McConnell-Miller's Tulsa team in 2002 and '03 and Goestenkors' team won both games by the exact same score, 90-36.

Today's game will be Goestenkors' first trip to Boulder with the Longhorns, although she's been to this state before to coach for USA Basketball in Colorado Springs and to recruit Duke players Abby and Emily Waner away from the Buffs. Goestenkors became Texas' coach this offseasonwhen legendary coach Jody Conradt resigned last March. Goestenkors coached at Duke for 15 years and has been to the NCAA tournament in each of the last 13 years.

"She's typically coaching the best players in the country," McConnell-Miller said of 'Coach G.' "It's too early to say Texas is indicative of what her style is like just because she hasn't had the time to implement everything she normally would.

"She does a great job developing her players. Even though they're the best, she finds a way to take them to another level. She's recruiting high school All Americans and she graduates collegiate All Americans."

In addition to the "Think Pink" campaign, there will be a CU alumni game at 4:30 p.m. in the Coors Events Center with former coach Ceal Barry and former player Gail Hook, now coaching at Monarch, going against each other as coaches of the alumni teams.

The alumni game is free, but tickets are required for the Texas game.

"We need a really strong performance," McConnell-Miller said. "We're going to have a lot of fans in here supporting this group and we need them to respond."

The Buffs (13-11, 2-9) are riding a six-game losing streak. They have lost nine of their last 10 to go from NCAA tournament qualifiers to being in danger of not making it into the WNIT.

The Longhorns (16-8, 4-6) broke a three-game losing streak by upsetting Baylor 61-51 on Wednesday.

Texas is led by sophomore guard Brittainey Raven, who averages 15.3 points per game and who is built similar to CU freshman forward Brittany Spears.

"But bigger than Spears," McConnell-Miller said. "Thinner. Longer arms than her. She's a very versatile player. She presents a lot of challenges."
