CU spikers sweep Troy in opener

Sutherland notches 11 kills in return

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- In her first volleyball match since the 2006 season, Colorado senior Amber Sutherland notched 11 kills as the Buffs opened the season Friday by defeating Troy.

CU downed Troy 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 at the Mississippi State Classic to improve to 15-8 in season openers.

Sutherland, who missed last season with a shoulder injury, wasn't the only Buff to reach double figures in kills. Senior Alex Buth led the team's attack with 13 kills.

Colorado hit .312 for the match with 14 errors on 96 swings, while holding Troy to an attack percentage of .158.

Senior Ashley VenHorst led the Buffs with nine digs, while Kaitlyn Burkett and Buth notched eight.

The Buffs continue the tournament today with matches against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi State.

What happened to Mallori Gibson, wasn't she one of their best players last year and a soph?
