CU bringing Showdown home

Rams A.D. follows Bohn, plans to play 2010 game in Fort Collins

The 2009 football game between the University of Colorado and Colorado State will be at Folsom Field, CU athletic director Mike Bohn confirmed Friday.

Bohn said he notified Colorado State officials of the decision, fulfilling a clause in the five-year agreement between the schools. The 2009 location is CU's choice because it is a Buffs home game.

Bohn said he wants the game in Boulder so he can keep a promise he made to season-ticket holders to have at least six true home games in Boulder every year. Prior to the announcement Friday, CU had just five true home games scheduled for 2009 and 2012.

"We will continue a dialogue with our colleagues at CSU on the future of this great series beyond 2010, but it is very important that we host a sixth home game next year to live up to our commitment to our fans, and to remain consistent with the standards of our Big 12 Conference," Bohn said.

In response to Bohn's decision to move the 2009 game to Boulder, Colorado State athletic director Paul Kowalczyk announced Friday that the Rams will host the 2010 game in Fort Collins.

“We are disappointed by CU’s decision as we believe the series ultimately belongs in Denver. However, in light of CU’s decision to play the 2009 game in Boulder, we believe we owe it to Colorado State University, our alumni, fans, students and the City of Fort Collins to bring the 2010 game back to Hughes Stadium,” Kowalczyk said in a statement. “We look forward to working with CU to ensure the continuation of the series beyond 2010.”

Said Bohn, “Our existing agreement permits CSU to exercise that option (to host in 2010). We have respect for the series and the Rams. But we think the importance of six games in Boulder is clear.”

CU and CSU are in negotiations to continue the series beyond 2010 and hope to have the situation resolved by Oct. 1. Bohn said earlier this year there is a possibility the Buffs could decide to replace CSU on the schedule in some years in the future.

The in-state rivalry moved to Denver’s Invesco Field in 1998, and has been in the state’s largest stadium for all but two years since. Those two games at Folsom satisfied CU’s commitment to season ticket-holders to have six true home games each season.

The two teams meet for the 80th time at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Invesco Field.

Excellent,
This is a win-win for us. We can get that 6th home game and keep the instate rivarly alive. Having CSU on our schedule is good, even if we're supposed to win. It gets us up for something in the beginning of every year, and hopefully we'll own them so it will be a nice way to start the season with a W. Go Buffs!

although expected, still sad to see.

Its the right decision. Lets keep 6 home games a year and start playing a better program like Utah or BYU in Denver. Even a Pac-10 matchup vs Cal or Oregon would generate way more interest.

CU has a hard enough time beating CSU. i don't think a tougher team would be good for bowl aspirations.

Sad how? I thought the most i mportant thing was that these two teams played for "the good of football in the state"? Now its not good? Guess it all comes down to the cash that the Rams NEED from this game after all huh?

Posted by feardaram on August 29, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i'm not talking about the cash. i would just prefer traveling to and tailgating in denver for the game, for obvious reasons. you guys have an awesome stadium, don't get me wrong, but for CSU fans denver is a more enjoyable venue. of course, it would be fine if we made you come up to FoCo in 2010 and gave you like 5,000 tickets, but that won't happen (i would guess) because CSU can't afford to take the pay cut.

no reason to play anyone but CSU in Denver, that game creates interest, anyone else wouldnt fly,

at the very least keep the series going

very reactionary response by the csu a.d., one that he will regret. sometimes pride makes us do things that are detrimental to our own cause. as don henley has said: "get over it".

The CU CSU game cannot be dropped from CU's schedule. It may not do much for the strength of schedule, but a win over CSU pumps the team up more than any top 25 team. talk about momentum, CSU is a great start to the season.

I don't see any problem playing in Denver, provided CU can satisfy its season ticket commitment with the correct amount of true home games. I don't even have a problem with CSU home games in the series being played at Invesco while CU plays home games at home (Folsom Field).

Looks like I am in the minority as far as wanting to see the series continue (provided it's a TV game, of course), but the CSU AD is being a little melodramatic in insisting that 2010 be played in Hughes. Just man up to the fact that the RMS in Denver is an important windfall to CSU athletics and come to an arrangement where CU allows you to play your home games at Invesco instead of Hughes.

Just as in any family, big brother has no problem helping out little brother, provided lil' brother shows a little humility and knows his place.

Speaking of lil bro knowing his place, if there is any doubt it should be cleared up by Sunday night.

GO BUFFS!!!

This is exactly what CU season ticket holders requested and we got our wish. This is not a true rivalry because we are not in the same conference like the other rivalries. As long as CSU is non-BCS I think we should schedule them occasionally and look for different opponents for our initial game.

There are several BCS schools that have really enjoyed beating the crap out of CSU prior to their conference schedule so their is no reason that cannot continue. Obviously CSU is the big draw in the CU-CSU series so they should have no problem scheduling USC and Nebraska to play them at Invesco.

i still cant figure out how cswho gets to play their "bowl" game week one??? without playing colorado cswho might drop football all together. i hear they are in talks to play UNC or mesa state in place of us. thats the nebraska brand of football, ask tom "creampuffs early are us" osbourne--a easy way to get some early wins. now can we stop talking about the sorry sheep, get this 'scrimmage' over with on sunday and get ready for some "real" football. can you feel it buff fans???? i wish i could have been at the pep rally...playing in ft collins in 2010 is like taking your prom date to 'jack in the box'-i guess its still football but it feels cheap. maybe i'll stop in the ft collins credit union and visit ol sonnny, where are those deposit slips coach?? go buffs

funny rodrigo, lol, lil bro just doesn't know how to act sometimes...friends dont let friends go to csu....i guess i would want to be drunk also if my team had to play their "bowl" game and ONLY meaningful game all year to start the season..."self medicating" might ease lammie fans pain of watching ralphie "have her way" with cam, once again.....is the mizzou errrrr misery v illinois game on TV today???? get em illinois!!! cant wait for sunday night, or i guess i could move to lincoln and watch the bugeaters v omaha school of mines--"the power of red" baby..yuk, what a joke. I AM A BUFFALO-WE ARE COLORADO!!!

rumor has it that former nebs coach frankie "cheers mate!" solich will be coaching his new ball club ohio v wyoming today in laramie. he might get PTSD if he gets to close to boulder--dont have a "relapse" coach, i'm sure there are AA mtgs in laramie...and i still dont think they have found all of erin crouch's body parts scattered around and buried all over folsom field after being "dismembered" by the true 'BLACKSHIRTS' on that "wondrous" day in 2001........62-36 ANY QUESTIONS? is still a great bumper sticker. go buffs

CSU will regret the knee jerk, spite themselves decision to take the game to Hughes in 2010 - they lose 500K by doing so.

CU should schedule Iowa, UCLA or other name team as a RM kickoff classic.

.....and speaking of those pityful "bugeaters", i sure hope bo "hothead" pelini can control himself on the sidelines today and not run across the field after the game and try 'beating up' the special teams coach on the other team, like he did a few years ago v kstate when he tried beating up coach synder. coach snyder was 85 years old for christ's sakes!!!! get a hold of yourself coach, what the hell is the matter with you!

The fact that csu did not sell out its ticket alloment for this game tells me everything I need to know. If it is so important for their program, their fans then sell your 30000 tickets. And don't tell me the distance if farther for FoCo fans. That is what fans do, they travel to games.

We have to have 6 home games to be competitive in the Big 12. Home games are such a huge advantage. ASU has seven this year and other schools give themselves a huge leg up. 5 just doesn't make sense.

Posted by BuffTime on August 30, 2008 at 1:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It isn't a matter of home field advantage. The "need" for 6 home games is because that is what was contractually promised to the owners of the suites and the season ticket owners. As mentioned in the article, if there is less than 6 home games then the suite owners would be due a partial refund.

CSU is reacting pretty immature to this whole thing. They are acting like CU is being a bully, when CU is just taking care of business first. If CSU had any idea how to actually run an athletic department (nice going throwing out a legend BTW, could have used a little more class on that one), they would realize that and keep the game in Denver for 2010. By acting like little babies I think they have sealed the fate of the series for the near future. I doubt their AD will be around for too long. He's not making very smart choices for his program.

geez
VT opens up by losing to East Carolina.
The pussker strenght of schedule actually got lower.

Posted by mgmtgrad on August 30, 2008 at 3:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Speaking of VT's loss, I hope CU players see that and realize, you don't take anything for granted.

But it was great to see the VT an EC game.

EC was actually picked by SI to upset VT, so I don't think it was a surprise to everyone. If I recall correctly it was more about EC being pretty good this year as well as VT having some issues that led to the pick-off prediction.

some more observations:
A&M is still overrated
always like it when Michigan bites the dust
EW put 330 yards passing up on Tech. I thought Tech was supposed to have a D this year
