CU's Sumler all business

Buffs starter working on own skills, becoming leader

All Demetrius Sumler cares about is winning.

The starting tailback for the Colorado football team has been a patient man since joining the program two years ago after becoming the leading rusher in prep history in the San Diego area. He redshirted in 2006 and saw limited duty backing up seniors Hugh Charles and Byron Ellis last year.

He has shown patience in other ways as well.

Reading and listening to all the attention paid over the past six months to three freshmen members of the 2008 recruiting class might have annoyed other young men with Sumler's ability. He just kept rolling along, taking care of his responsibilities and trying to get better. His attitude paid off during fall camp when coaches named him the starting tailback for the season opener Sunday night against Colorado State.

"I know what I can do and I felt like my play will speak for itself," Sumler said. "I'll go out there on Sunday and I'll play and hopefully there will be something to talk about."

Sumler is no stranger to the Rams. He stepped into the lineup during the first offensive series for the Buffs last season after Hugh Charles suffered a hamstring injury. He ran 16 times for 85 yards and a touchdown in the Buffs' victory.

Sumler has been criticized at times during his first two years in the program for not running hard or hitting the holes with authority. Those criticisms have come from his position coach Darian Hagan, a former CU quarterback who might be the best player in the program's history. Sumler is no fool. He understands that Hagan is just trying to get the best out of him and he understands why he chooses to do so, on occasion, in such a public fashion.

Sumler said the perfectionist inside him hates hearing the criticism and he generally responds with greater focus and effort. He said Hagan discovered this about him relatively soon after he became a Buff. Lately Hagan has been urging Sumler to be more of a leader among the running backs and Sumler said he has embraced that role.

Sumler said he feels an obligation to try to help the young men aiming for his job as much as possible because it's what former CU running backs Byron Ellis and Charles did for him the past two years. Sumler said he learned a lot from those players, including the philosophy of not paying attention to media reports about the team. He said he adopted that philosophy after Charles told him that worrying about what's in the paper adds too much stress to minds already overloaded with school and football.

"I pride myself on working hard and controlling what I can control," Sumler said.

Sumler is an economics major but he doesn't know exactly what he will do with his degree. He said he chose economics because he plans on having a lot of money. He said he might want to become a small businessman. He is also considering getting into coaching.

He's a relatively quiet young man from a distance, but he is engaging and personable in conversations and interviews. Sumler is family oriented and often hangs out with his girlfriend, Marissa, who he began dating in high school. It was coincidence they ended up at CU together. Sumler said Marissa had applied to CU before he committed to come to Boulder.

Sumler expects to be challenged by freshmen Darrell Scott, Rodney Stewart and even Ray Polk, who has decided to redshirt this year. More experienced players such as junior Kevin Moyd and sophomore Corey Nabors will also put pressure on Sumler to perform. If someone takes the starting job away from him, it won't be because they have outworked him.

"I'm a football fanatic. I usually watch the NFL network," he said. "I know coach Hawk doesn't like that, for football to be your life, but that's what I love to do."

Sumler said he would like to rush for 1,000 yards this season, a feat never accomplished in the regular season by either Charles or Ellis. The last CU running back to run for 1,000 yards or more in a season was Bobby Purify in 2004.

"I just want to be productive," he said. "I'm not really a big stats guy.

"I just want to be productive every time I get the ball. I want to make the right read. I want to make a guy miss. I want to run through a guy in short-yardage situations."

Notable

Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes said he will not choose starting guards for Sunday's game until Saturday night. ... Tight ends coach Kent Riddle said junior Patrick Devenny takes over as the starter with Riar Geer out for the first two games. Riddle said true freshman Ryan Deehan will play as will senior Devin Shanahan. Fullbacks Maurice Cantrell and Jake Duren can fill in, too. ... Riddle coaches special teams as well and said he doesn't know a great deal about the kickers who will replace CSU starting kicker Jason Smith, who is out with a broken arm. Riddle said his primary concern is where to position kickoff return man Josh Smith without knowing how far kickoffs are likely to travel.

Congrates for the hard work Sumler, looking forward for you to do well this season.

People forget that Sumler was recruited because of his acommplisments as the leading rusher in prep history in the San Diego area.

With the dept and talent at RB, an improved OL and two sets of reciever corps, play should be very exciting this year. Which should open more play options.

This young team will have it's share of challenges, but I believe CU will be succussful enough to get it's share of national TV again this year.

The other good news is CU is so deep at RB position and this should spill over to kick returning.

The next couple of recruiting classes can concentrate on other needs.

I'm not worried about Sumler as the starting running back. It speaks well to the depth at the position that the Buffs are not forced to put freshmen into starting roles out of need.

Plus, there is nothing wrong with having talented backs share the load. In 2001, Chris Brown had 946 yards rushing; Bobby Purify had 916. As I recall, that season turned out pretty well for the Buffs!

Go Buffs!

Now its been well documented that the Rams have been struggling to get seats filled at their stadium, but this is ridiculous.

All these ramamania posts are likely just media/stakeholder folks trying to drum up "buzz" and "energy" surrounding this dead series. Outside of this message board there is NO hype about this game.

104.3 sportscasters sit there every afternoon waiting for people to phone in or text in and there's just nothing. That should say something. The stands on the goat's side will be at least a third empty. That also should say something.

Husker roster update:

-Baker Steincooler is not on the depth chart. kNU's only 5 star recruit did not cut it in fall camp and will likely redshirt.

-While Marlon Lucky is the starter, he will likely split most of his carries with two other rb's. The former 5 star recruit has never really panned out at Nebraska.

-LB depth is very scary for the Pinkshirts. So scary that a true freshman, Will Compton, will be backing up two walk ons at outside linebacker.

-Bo Pelini still refuses to pass out Blackshirts to his defensive players. He will not do so until his players earn them. In other words, the defense at kNU will not see them until 2012, after Bo is fired and replaced by a real head coach.

-And finally, things don't look good for former OL Andy Christensen.

I’m tired of people bring up Greer’s situation. As for Greer's off campus fight, there are fights every weekend at every college town between young college boys.

It's only the high profile guys that get charges pressed and written about in the newspapers. The other may get charged and probation, but not written about.

My roommate in college was trying to break up a fight that started when a drunken guy groped a female in another group.

Through all the commotion the assailant ran out the back door of the bar before the police arrived and yet my roommate got cited (disturbing the peace) and probation. He was just trying to stop the fight and the guy that was being chivalrous that was fighting with the assailant got into more trouble. Even though there was no one left to press charges, he (the assailant) had already run away.

As far as that yahoo odds link goes, either they are smoking some seriously nasty crack or that is a typo. No one with any sanity would put the lambs as a 11 point favorite over the Buffs. Not even in their prime were the lambs favored like that.

SI has the lambs a full 50 place rankings behind the Buffs this year. Nice try though.

Posted by montanabuff on August 27, 2008 at 10:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

sfbuff and BuffTime

Rivals got their spread from the SportingNews, which has the line reversed.

Rest assured, it is the Buffs who are the 11-point favorites.

Posted by buffalo_flyer on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ray Polk is redshirting? seems to deserve more coverage than one sentence buried in the story, whats the deal?

Posted by milehighbuff on August 27, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The Rivals odds is an obvious typo. Vegas odds are CU by 11 1/2.

Look for Cody to surprise fans this weekend by making great decisions, and rushing for positive yardage.

If all goes as it should, CU will take a commanding lead early due to the spread & hurry up. CU simply has too many options available on offense, and the Rams will tire on D.

CSU rushers will gain some yards, but when it's all said and done, CU prevails in this (lack of a) contest by 14 or more, barring significant turnovers.

There is a full article on Ray Polk red-shirting. It is from a couple of days ago.

It was his idea. I think he wants time to get a good hold on the offense and get his classwork under his belt. Strategically if DS leaves early, he would be the favorite to start for 2 yrs after that as well.

From what I've read, it is more of a soft red-shirt. If the coaches feel he can contribute meaningfully or if there is an injury to one of the other big boys, then he will play.

Hasn't delivered? Despite having one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Hawk was able to coach us to a bowl game. We upset Oklahoma, and had one of the top recruiting classes in the entire nation.

The Rams wouldn't know about playing with the big boys. They call it the WAC for a reason. The Rams couldn't compete with anyone on our schedule, so go to the shed and play with your girlfriend.

Im not so sure its speed with sumler as much as effort - he just doesnt run hard, especially in short yardage.

Hope he's better this year

Posted by Saheeb on August 28, 2008 at 2:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Archalon. Good point. I think Sumler's speed will show on the field once he's more comfortable with where he's supposed to hit the hole, reading defenses, etc. Basically, as he gains more experience and familiarity I think he'll be more confident in where he's supposed to go,etc. Last year, especially in a few short yardage situations (Iowa State!) there was room for him to get the yards we needed but he kind of danced around behind blockers (like Hugh Charles) waiting for something to open up instead of driving right to where he needed to get the first down. On that fourth down in the Iowa State game in particular, when a hole didn't open up he could have dived and gotten the half yard we needed. Instead, he danced around waiting for a hole to emerge. I'm not sold he's a great back yet. But, I think we'll see better running with more time and confidence. And, now he's feeling some urgency with three stud backs behind him waiting for their shot.

I also noticed Cody's two interceptions were batted really high in the air by the receivers. Any team could have grabbed them and it was obviously not the qb's fault. Helps to put that high interceeption total into perspective
