Torn ACL knocks Major out for season
Colorado freshman Jon Major, one of thestate’s top-two recruits last year, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice Wednesday.
The linebacker is out for the season, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins confirmed Wednesday evening.
Major was suiting up at inside linebacker, the position that belonged to standout Jordon Dizon, now with the Detroit Lions. Major was expected to contend for significant playing time this season.
The Ponderosa High School graduate injured his knee during a non-contact drill at practice. His injury was the third torn ACL injury to hit the Buffs during training camp, all in non-contact drills. Freshman guard Mike Iltis tore his ACL on the first day of camp on Aug. 5 and junior defensive end Drew Hudgins tore his ACL last week.
Major was one of eight four-star recruits in Hawkins’ 2008 recruiting class.

Total bummer man... Alot of injuries this summer, guess that's the price you pay for practicing so hard right off the bat.

Three ACL's in eight days? Maybe we should invest in some knee braces for all the players. Not just the lead leg of the quarterbacks. I really thought that Major would eventually start this year. He had one of the most impressive rivals videos of the 08 class. Big Loss!

This is starting to become a problem. All this good talent getting injured and having to redshirt for the season does not help with as tough of schedule CU has. I think if CU can avoid any more major injuries or academic fallouts, we will be fine.
The only way to look at all of this from a positive perspective is that to remember that all of these redshirt freshmen will be learning the system and will be back next year when we should have even more players with experience.
This stuff happens in college football and is why there are 105 players on the team.
It’s up to some of the other guys to really step up and fill the void.
Good luck Jon. I was just injured in an auto accident where I was hit from behind and became the middle of a front and rear end accident and have been in physical therapy for two months. All I can say is keep your goals in front of you and realistic. Use your time well in classes while redshirting and the next four years of your life will still be great.
It all begins today with your attitude and don’t rush it or over do it… except in class. Take full advantage of this year and kick butt in class and accomplish as much as you can in your academics so next year and the years after you will be in a better position.

This really sucks! Three ACLs already, that does sound high. I blew my own ACL out in football, so I can sympathize with these guys. But with medical expertise where it is today, I believe they will be back strong next year (except maybe Hudgins.)

Ya, the good news for Major is that he's young. In my experience, it takes two years to be fully recovered from ACL surgery, but you *can* come back even stronger. He can still have a full career at CU. Hope recovery for all these guys goes smoothly.

Jon was looking like a major stud on D. So sorry. Mend it and get back next year. Guess that's why Cabral has recruited with some overlap. Katoa and Major in 2 years. Likely the best LB corp in the big twelve. Both have NFL talent. This sucks but we'll get over it. Rippy and Mohler. Time for some underclassmen to step up. I would put bucks on Beatty. Animal Beasty kinda guy. Don't worry Buff fans...LB is still a force here. We were a bit overloaded.

It's never good to lose a potential star and a potential starter, but if it has to happen (and it will happen), solace can be taken in that Major is a young player (with a redshirt he may have used this year, anyway), and the loss occurred in a position with the most depth on the team.
Hang in there, Mr. Major. Hit the books, and be a leader off the field. Enjoy your freshman year, and absorb all you can in meetings and on the sideline. You'll be back on the field before you know it!

WTF with all the injuries ? This is a problem. 3 ACLs in non-contact drills is ridiculous. Call Pittman into the office and see why the strenght and conditioning program hasnt prepped them better.
Only silver lining I see is that they cant blow his RS late in the season, so we get him another year.
Otherwise, this totally blows.

Maybe we can investigate the agronomy team, who is in charge of keeping our turf up to speed?
This hurts no matter how you slice it, good luck in your recovery.

The Florida Gators are up to 5 ACLs this preseason so far. Very strange.

I can't visit this website on a consistent basis because of all the discouraging news that seems to re-appear on a daily basis. This level of catastrophic injuries to key players all in the preseason is absurd. At this point, I just waiting for the “Hawkins, Scott and Miller all lost for the year article”.

THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!! Good luck Jon on a speady recovery and we'll see you on the field in '09. But this really blows!!

At least we're not as bad as Florida, who has had 5 players with torn ACLs thus far in camp. I was really looking forward to seeing Jon play. I think he'll be an animal on the field once he rehabs the knee.

Get well, soon, Jon! We're behind you all the way! Fortunately, we have some depth at LB this year with Rippy, Smart and Jones.

Well, that's football.
Tough luck Jon. Take care of that thing.

I couldn't have said it better, Marcus.
The obvious negative is that we could have really used this guy this season.
The positives - the kid is young, we still have some good guys at LB and Cabral is our LB Coach.
3 ACLs in non-contact is a little bit concerning. There has to be some explanation (turf? training regimen?).
The ACL is a weird thing. it's not like there are a heck of a lot (if any) exercises designed to strengthen the ACL, as it is a ligament and not muscle. If there were some way to reduce ACL injuries, my guess is that they wouldn't be such a common sports injury. But that's just my opinion.
Anyway, lets hope for a speedy recovery and that Major can remain focused on his academic obligations while undergoing such a difficult rehab. Good Luck.
GO BUFFS!!!

Ditto on what everyone is saying - this hurts, and likely (and unfortunately) Major won't be the last casualty.

Bad news for sure. No one likes to hear about these injuries and it is human nature to question whether or not there is something amiss in the training regime of these players, but IMO, I doubt that is the issue at CU or any other D-1 school.
Football players are especially at risk because of the amount of lateral motion involved in just about every game or practice, even if there is no contact. Remember, these are big bodies moving with explosiveness and sudden changes in direction. One study of college football players reported 42 ACL injuries per thousand players at risk per year, or a 16% chance of ACL injury in a four-year collegiate career. This represents a 100-fold increase in injury compared with the general population. CU will have its share.
Unfortunately, there isn't any way to prevent ACL tears or to predict when they will happen. However, there is hope. Researchers are attempting to determine whether the muscles surrounding the ACL can be re-trained to better protect it during high risk activities like landing from a jump or twisting. Other helpful prevention techniques include careful pre-season training to help develop the strength of the ligament. I'm sure the staff at CU is all over these prevention techniques and doing all they can to keep the players as strong and physically prepared as possible.
I wish all these players full and speedy
recoveries.

wear shorter cleats, take better care of the turf and fire Pittman - the strength and conditioning program has to have at least something to do with it.
Posted by Shaggy on August 14, 2008 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Archalon, sir:
Whoa, Pard. I feel your passion, but I'm not ready to fire Mr. Pittman until it can be objectively determined that his conditioning program, or lack thereof, is contributing to these injuries. I was speaking in general terms. I'm not ready to throw Mr. Pittman or anyone else under the bus at this point. If the things you note prove to be true then corective action is justified.
I do not profess to know what caused the injury to Jon Major or the others who suffered an ACL injury. Maybe the turf gave way under his weight and force of his effort. Maybe a cleat hung up, maybe they should have had different shoes on. Maybe it was something else. Maybe Mr. Major doesn't even know. All a bunch of "maybes" and all speculation based on what I've read thus far.
Also, I can't comment on the field conditions, but I can't imagine the maintenance crew not doing all they can to keep the practice fields in the best shape possible. I'm sure that with over 100 players practicing on it twice a day its gonna have some wear/tear to it.
Anyway, I again hope they recover fully and you have a great day!

I was being sarcastic - should have noted it in the comment.
Pittman is doing a fine job I'm sure - just frustrated with the injuries.
I hope the injury bug is done - I dont miss Simas, Fataagi or Tau cause they brought in on themselves. I miss hard working kids who - by luck of the draw - get hurt in routine drills.

Kenny must be thinking up a new screen name.
Could we be lucky enough to never see the troll again?

archalon, be less sarcastic because I also thought you we're a crazed nut, you usually post more positive or constructive criticisms so I was shocked.Pittman from previous stories is doing an excellent job and is probably just a frustrated and thinking the same things himself of what maybe he could do differently.

Pittman has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is all rapid deceleration by the players themselves or a hit to the leg while foot is planted. Cleats are a must for football. This is part of the game. Archalon settle down.

the shag-man is right on. the prevention of the terrible acl has been the holy grail of the football strenth and conditioning professionals for at least four decades. i remember when this injury, unless you were a gimpy-legged quarterback, would spell your football end; knee filleted and laid open, never to recover. now, the orthopods tighten that ligament like you wouldn't believe. easy on the trainers, i promise you, they(he) haven't slept well since this "rash" started.
