CU-CSU game officially set for Sunday kickoff

Rivalry tilt won't compete with NFL

The Rocky Mountain Showdown has officially been moved to Sunday.

The Colorado-Colorado State football game will be held Aug. 31 at Invesco Field in Denver. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on FSN.

The move is designed to help relieve stress on Denver police and fire departments, which will be already facing a hectic week with the Democratic National Convention in town. The DNC is scheduled to end on Thursday, Aug. 28.

The CU-CSU game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30.

The move to Sunday does not force the Buffs and Rams to compete with the NFL, as there are no games scheduled that day.

"It gives us a guaranteed prime-time window," said CU athletic director Mike Bohn. "Plus, there's a little separation from the DNC, which gives the emergency and se-curity people a little break.

"It's just one of those things that made complete sense."

Colorado had played a handful of Sunday games in the past, including two of the more memorable regular-season contests in CU history.

In 1990, the Buffs opened the season with a 31-31 tie against Tennessee in the Pigskin Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Colorado went on to win the national championship that season. In 2001, CU lost to Fresno State, 24-22, in the Jim Thorpe Classic at Folsom Field. The Buffs rebounded to win the Big 12 championship that year.

Colorado's last game was also on Sunday, when CU lost to Alabama in the Independence Bowl.

CU's first home game is Sept. 6, when the Buffs host Eastern Washington at 1:30 p.m.

New coach, new quarterback, same old crappy rest of the team. I don't think csu stands a chance against cu this year. For the last five years this game has been close every game. Im predicting a huge blowout. 35-7 CU wins and D. Scott rushes for 205 yards and 3 td's. Maybe Ralphie V will go nuts again and trample that stupid little ram. Go Buffs.

P.S. They will be selling alcohol on sundays by then.

Yeah, with Lubbick and Barnett gone, we ought to rip off 26 wins in a row against them. Good times.

I think it took Tall all day (1:21 pm? Normally he is spewing his uneducated negativity by early morning) to think of something slanderous to say to this... Either that or 'Daddy Gary and Uncle Tom' just let him out of his servant cage... They must be busy with him lately LOL...

only two words to say about that 1990 "championship":

Fifth Down

Yes, it seems CU was granted a 5th down. It was an officiating error.

It seems on the surface that the Buffs, benefitted from the 5th down, and maybe they did. However, if the officiating crew had been keeping proper track of the game, I highly doubt Coach Mac would have elected to spike the ball on the very final play of the game (which is what Hagan did on what would have been the fourth down).

Isn't it illegal to catch a ball off the foot of another player (i.e. you can't catch a ball that is kicked after a throw?). If I remember correctly a certain self-important team in red benefitted from such a play...

WaltoClown - Excellent point...Aren't them Husker fans Klassy with a capital K. What, with their Savvy 'Sal is dead, Go big Red' signs... and supporting those adorable student-athlete's that pull their girlfriends down a flight of stairs by their hair... So cute - don't you wish we could be like them... Golly, how am I not a nebraska fan?...
