CU netters set for Big 12 quarters

Buffs open tourney play against KU

The Colorado tennis team will try to avoid a repeat of last year when it begins Big 12 tournament play in today's quarterfinals against Kansas.

The fourth-seeded Buffs and No. 5 Jayhawks square off at 11 a.m. at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, with live scoring available online at www.aggieathletics.com.

As the No. 4 seed for the second year in a row, the Buffs (11-10) earned a bye through Thursday's first round. Kansas (10-12), meanwhile, skunked No. 12 Iowa State 4-0.

CU, which has won four in a row, beat Kansas 7-0 last month during a season-high five-dual win streak.

The Buffs' situation is similar to that of last spring when they beat Oklahoma State during the regular season only to fall to the fifth-seeded Cowboys in the Big 12 quarters.

The Buffs earned an NCAA tournament berth despite that loss. But picking up at least one win in the Big 12 tourney might be more crucial this season with the Buffs' lesser overall record.

If the Buffs beat Kansas, they'll face either No. 1 Baylor or No. 9 Texas Tech in Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinals.

The CU men's and women's golf teams also begin Big 12 tournament play today.

The women tee off at 8 a.m. at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla., while the men -- who are having one of their best springs in recent years -- play at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.

The women, who placed sixth last year, are led into competition by Dominique Pytlewski's 75.59 stroke average.

Fresh off of their victory at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, the men are led by Michael Baird's 74.20.

Teams play 18 holes today, Saturday and Sunday.
