Chalmers to test NBA waters

Kansas' Chalmers

to test NBA waters

Kansas star Mario Chalmers declared himself eligible for the NBA draft on Wednesday, deciding to not sign with an agent to leave open the possibility of a return to the national champion Jayhawks.

The junior guard, whose 3-pointer near the end of regulation sent the Jayhawks into overtime against Memphis in the national championship game, says he'll come out only if it looks like he'll be picked in the first round of the June 26 draft. If not -- he's currently projected to go between pick Nos. 25-35 -- Chalmers will return to Kansas, the team he helped win its third national championship.

Two more Tigers

declare for draft

The Memphis Tigers' entire starting lineup last season has declared for the NBA draft now that juniors Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier have become the last from the 2008 NCAA runner-up to announce.

The school announced Wednesday that neither Anderson and Dozier is expected to sign with an agent, leaving the possibility of returning for their senior season open.

They joined Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts as early entries along with senior center Joey Dorsey.

With a deep pool of underclassmen entering the draft, Anderson and Dozier are unlikely to get drafted with their teammates. But Memphis coach John Calipari says Anderson and Dozier will be able to work out for NBA teams, participate in pre-draft camp and get feedback from scouts.

Notable

New Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford announced the suspension of guard Terrel Harris, citing only an unspecified violation of team rules.

Oklahoma announced that 6-foot-7 wing player Juan Pattillo will transfer to Oklahoma from the College of Southern Idaho. OU will lose guard Tony Neysmith, who plans to transfer.

D.J. Augustin is declaring for the NBA draft, and Texas teammate A.J. Abrams is headed with him. Neither has hired an agent.

Xavier coach Sean Miller has agreed to a 10-year contract extension.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino said it's unlikely forward Derrick Caracter will return to the Cardinals after declaring for the NBA draft.

Arizona assistant basketball coach Kevin O'Neill has been reassigned to duties within the athletic department. O'Neill was hired last spring, and took over as interim coach when coach Lute Olson took a leave of absence. After Olson returned in March, he announced that O'Neill would no longer be a part of his staff. Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood said O'Neill would serve as an assistant athletic director until June 30.

Former Massachusetts point guard Derek Kellogg was named the school's head basketball coach.
