McConnell-Miller to stay
Coach says she's no longer a candidate at UCLA
Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn said Thursday that reports that he and women's basketball coach Kathy McConnell-Miller have agreed to a contract extension are "incomplete."
Bohn said he and McConnell-Miller are working toward a multi-year extension, but that nothing has been agreed to, and that it could take months to finalize a deal.
Terms of the multi-year extension were not disclosed by Bohn.
McConnell-Miller withdrew her name from consideration for the vacancy at UCLA on Wednesday night. A Tennessee newspaper reported that McConnell-Miller had been waiting to see whether UCLA could come close or match her current $350,000 annual salary at Colorado.
Late Wednesday night she "reaffirmed her dedication" to CU and said she "is no longer a candidate for other coaching positions."
"My family and I are looking forward to continuing to build CU women's basketball and to make all Colorado fans, alumni and faculty proud," McConnell-Miller said. "We remain excited to be Buffs."
No word was given Wednesday on who UCLA chose to fill its vacancy.
But McConnell-Miller and six-year Tennessee assistant coach Nikki Caldwell were the top two candidates. Caldwell had a second interview on Wednesday at UCLA.
McConnell-Miller just finished her third season at Colorado and is known to be seeking a contract extension on her current five-year deal worth between $350,000 and $375,000 per year.
The Buffs have not offered McConnell-Miller a contract extension.
Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn said he and McConnell-Miller "have had dialogue regarding her contract status and will continue to talk and explore opportunities pursuant to the guide-lines and procedures outlined by the CU Board of Regents for any multi-year contract."
"Coach Miller has a strong allegiance to her team and this university and we as a department are mutually committed to her and her program," Bohn said. "There is a collective desire to elevate
this program and we are excited about the future."
McConnell-Miller, 41-53 at CU and 132-141 in nine years overall, enjoyed some success with her team this season, including an 11-game win streak and top-25 ranking in nonconference play, but the Buffs were a disappointing 5-11 in Big 12 games. The team responded, however, by making a run to the WNIT semifinals, and the Coors Events Center crowds became much more spirited in the postseason.
McConnell-Miller followed up the WNIT run with a letter to the editor in the Camera, saying in part, "After watching how so many of you embraced and invested in our team, this inspires and drives myself and my staff as the leaders of your team. I will intensify my efforts in the maturation of our players, including skill development, strength and conditioning, mental toughness and teamwork."
Her letter was released on CU's website on April 3. Eight days later, UCLA officials were granted permission by CU to interview McConnell-Miller.
"We will move forward with a full commitment from coach Miller, her staff and team, and anticipate the same from new players coming in, fans, boosters and the community to help us continue to build a highly competitive program," Bohn said.
Kathy Olivier resigned as UCLA's coach in March after 15 seasons with the Bruins and took a job within UCLA's athletic department to work on special projects.

Whew; that was close! Now we will continue to see more subpar women's basketball after having a solid, quality program under Ceal Barry. Why so much hand-wringing about McConnell-Miller? I guess CU likes those coaches that underachieve and strive for those under-500 seasons.

BuffSteve is correct. McConnell-Miller hasn't done jack since she's been here except make it seem like a good thing to qualify for the NIT. Ceal Barry's teams were in the NCAA tournament just about every year. Golly, wish the women's basketball team could get back to it's old glory.
