Bzdelik aims to add two
Spring signing period began Wednesday
Jeff Bzdelik hopes April visits will lead to May signings.
The Colorado head men's basketball coach and his staff are still trying to add to an already promising 2008 recruiting class with another player or two during the late signing period, which began on Wednesday.
According to rivals.com, the Buffs have offered scholarships to Devon Dumes, a 6-3 guard who averaged 17 points a game last season at Vincennes (Ind.) University JC, and Wesley Witherspoon, a four-star high school recruit from Lilburn, Ga.
Both prospects have made official visits to CU.
"Jeff has shown that he's not going to shy away from kids that have those scholarship offers from big-name schools," said Adam Munsterteiger, who covers CU recruiting for BuffStampede.com.
Dumes, who shot 40 percent from behind the arc and 84 percent from the foul line, is also being courted by UTEP, Ohio State, Alabama and Arkansas.
Witherspoon, who will make the announcement of his decision on May 1, is also considering Memphis, Texas, Virginia, Colorado and Florida.
The Buffs received a verbal commitment from shooting guard Ebuka Anyaorah afterhis visit in March. But the North Gwinnett (Ga.) product changed his mind and signed with Georgia, despite a last-minute plea from Bzdelik.
"It's tough anytime you have a verbal from a kid and you're approaching signing day and lose him," Munsterteiger said. "It sounds like his parents wanted him to stay home. That would have been big for CU."
The Buffs lacked size during the 2007-08 season and used the early signing period to address that issue by landing Trey Eckloff (6-9), Austin Dufault (6-8) and Toby Veal (6-7). Casey Crawford (6-9) and Jeremy Williams (6-7) are also expected to be in the mix after redshirting.
"They did a good job adding size and that was one of the big things they were focused on when they got here," Munsterteiger said. "And they're tall guys who can handle the basketball and shoot the basketball. They fit Bzdelik's system."
The other remaining early signee is point guard Nate Tomlinson. The coaching staff raves about the Australian's potential but would like to add a veteran like Dumes to take some of the pressure off the freshman.
The dismissal of sophomore Xavier Silas and junior-college recruit Javonte Clanton opened up the two additional scholarships. The Buffs will only have one senior on the 2008-09 roster, Jermyl Jackson-Wilson, and the coaching staff would like to use that scholarship on the best available player, regardless of position.
Veal, the only CU recruit ranked among the top 150 prospects by rivals.com, should become a fan favorite as a true freshman.
"Veal has some star power," Munsterteiger said. "He was turning heads on the AAU circuit. I think his skills get overlooked because he was so athletic and dunked so much."

Wesley Weatherspoon would be off the hook for a commitment. That would be a great sign that things are changing in Boulder.
