Buffs fans descend on Boulder

A human wave of screaming, dancing and high-fiving football fans flooded the University Hill area Saturday afternoon in a frenzied celebration of the Buffaloes' stunning last-minute victory over the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Buffs' 27-24 upset over No. 3-ranked Oklahoma drew flocks of elated CU students and other fans to nearby bars and restaurants after the game. The crowd, made up mostly of people departing from Folsom Field, was so thick at times it brought traffic on Broadway and nearby cross streets to a standstill.

Some motorists took advantage of the wait time by offering high-fives from their windows as some fans ran down the middle of the road, and by honking in unison with dozens of other drivers.

"No one should ever underestimate us as a school ever again," said Chelsea Drake, a 19-year-old junior at CU who said she was among the hundreds of students who ran onto the football field following the victory.

Ryan Watson, a 24-year-old senior at the school, said there was a sense "in the air" during the game that CU, which trailed 24-7 at one point, might do something "amazing."

"It just felt like something was going to happen in the stadium — something big," he said.

The big moment came when CU's Kevin Eberhart kicked a career-long 45-yard field goal as time expired to clinch the win for Colorado.

Brad McCracken, a 23-year-old senior at CU, described the pinnacle moment.

"It felt like time slowed down," McCracken said. "Everything went silent for a moment. When the ball went in, there was this explosion of sound from the crowd. It was incredible."

For some fans on the Hill Saturday, the Colorado victory sparked renewed hopes of a possible post season for the Buffaloes.

"It was the best game of my life, so far," said 20-year-old CU student Kyle Siderius. "The Buffs are coming back."
