Redshirt freshmen at the reins
Buffs, Sooners led by young QBs

Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins has thrown six TDs and six picks this season.
Unless they meet in the Big 12 Conference championship game somewhere along the way, the Colorado and Oklahoma football teams won't play again until 2010 after battling Saturday in Folsom Field.
But it's entirely possible the same two starting quarterbacks will be leading the programs when the 2010 contest rolls around.
Imagine for a moment, a matchup featuring fifth-year seniors Sam Bradford and Cody Hawkins, only with Hawkins surrounded by much more talent than currently populates the CU depth chart. It could be something special.
So far in their redshirt freshman seasons, Bradford has overshadowed Hawkins and most other young signal callers in the conference.
The 6-foot-4 Oklahoma City product has looked like he has the potential to compete for the Heisman Trophy in future seasons playing for the No. 3-ranked Sooners. He is already the second most efficient passer in the country directing the highest scoring offense through the first four weeks of the season.
In the first month of his career, Bradford has twice broken the previous school record for consecutive completions, set by former Heisman winner Jason White at 18. Bradford completed 22 in a row over the first two games of the season against North Texas and Miami and he completed 21 straight over another span in the past two games against Utah State and Tulsa.
The national record for consecutive completions is 24 and is held by former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin.
"He's doing everything well," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "He's throwing the ball well. He's reading, his progressions are great. He's been great at the line of scrimmage and in and out of the huddle. And he's just getting more and more confident andsure of himself and what he's doing and allowing the players around him to make plays.
"He's just directing the offense like we hoped he would."
Bradford came to Oklahoma from just up the highway at Putnam City North High School in Oklahoma City, where he was a talented high school basketball player and ranked the 17th best quarterback in the country during his senior season by Scout.com.
Just like Hawkins, he sat and watched last season as the OU offense struggled at times with Paul Thompson at quarterback after being moved back to the position from wide receiver.
Hawkins watched his teammates flounder in his first year in Boulder as Bernard Jackson played quarterback after two years at running back and wideout. The Buffs haven't made the leap the OU offense has — the Sooners are scoring 61.5 points per game — but this won't be the same predictable CU attack Oklahoma faced in Norman, Okla., last year.
With Hawkins at quarterback, the Buffs have made dramatic improvement in the passing game. CU threw for a meager 1,422 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games last year. In the first four games this season, it has thrown for 954 yards and six touchdowns.
Those aren't numbers that will scare a team like the Sooners, but Stoops said the Buffs are much more versatile now. Cody Hawkins has completed passes to 16 different receivers already. Only 13 caught passes in all of 2006.
Bradford has thrown only two interceptions for the Sooners and 14 touchdown passes. Hawkins has thrown six of each.
"I told him, I said, 'We've got to get over the mulligan thing.' " coach Dan Hawkins said. "He takes a mulli every game, and you can't do that. We've got to be able to have some games where we're not turning the ball over at all, either fumbles or interceptions."
Cody Hawkins is his worst critic. He doesn't judge himself based on touchdown passes, passing yards or completion percentage. Those are just parts of the game.
"We're 2-2 so I've done OK, but probably not as well as I should have done," he said. "I mean, my job is to win football games, and right now we're 2-2, which is definitely not where we want to be.
"But it's a long season and hopefully we'll get rolling."

Come on 2ndbuff, you definitely have an issue with size. Is it something personnal? What about Doug Flutie? Bradford has a talented supporting cast which makes playing QB a lot easier. Let's switch QBs and see what the stats look like.

OU's gonna lose, period.
They'll definately lose in any big game (BCS) and they absolutely will cheat every chance they get. The NCAA has set up a field office in Moore just for the Sooners.

Yeah, pretty clear the reporter is trying to diminish the disparity in size. How about the editorializing in this "news" article: where the reporter says Cody is his toughest critic, then goes on to quote Cody as saying being 2-2 is "OK" and "hopefully we'll get rolling." Not exactly self-critcism!
Just more Hawkins' worship from the Camera

Give it a rest. Cody has done well for us. He has proven himself a capable quarterback with potential. Many QB's (especially freshmen) would have folded against FSU when the running game was completely shut down and the pressure to make something happen shifted to the passing game. Yes he needs to get better, but that seems to be the case on every other position on the offense. He has also proven himself to be the best quarterback on the team. Hence he is starting. If another QB distinguishes himself as better and Hawk doesn't give him a look, then you can start the nepotism, he's not good enough, tall enough or whatever else argument. Until then give it a rest.

Nelson and Ballenger are both better right now, but we'll never get to see them play will we ... because "Johnnny Gunslinger's" dad gets to make that decision.

Josh Heupel and Nate Hybl were great NFL players too.

WhosyourHusker: Nelson isn't ready to replace Hawkins. Ask any member of the team and I suspect they'll support that (but you can't because Boulder is too far from Lincoln to drive on only a learner's permit). Furthermore it would be imprudent to burn a true freshman's redshirt (in the case of Ballenger) for minimal benefit gained. Don't you think Coach Hawkin's would prefer to start Nelson over Cody if his son was truly a priority over the team. Let Cody step in as a Junior after the offensive line matures when he could really excel? Your arguments, as usual, are grounded in nothing but a desire for attention.
2nd Buff (are you the same person as Whosyour? I always forget): I know that responding to your ridiculous assertions only encourages you...but...your point regarding Sipili's recent dismissal only supports JBuff's charge. Sipili would be playing this week on 118 Division One (whatever they call it these days). I doubt that he'd have been suspended at at all by Coach Stoops. Say what you want, but in my mind Oklahoma IS the evil empire of College football (which doesn't mean that I don't hate Nebraska and Miami more).

Whosyourdaddy / 2ndBuff / Footballguru is a known Husker fan that gives the rest of the "Husker nation" a bad name because his sole purpose on this message board is to appear that he is a pessimistic CU fan that pretends to give the illusion that he is all knowing about the University of Colorado and the football team. Anything that he posts should be discarded and chalked up to an angry Nebraska fan that will only deny that CU is not their rival, but yet turn around and spend the majority of his day pretending to be someone that he isn't and create multiple personalities / call names for himself and then post them on this board. All true CU fans are proud of our athletic department and will continue to support the University of Colorado now and forever. Go Buffs!!!

You're amazed at the trash we talk. ARE YOU KIDDING ME 2ndFluff. All you do all day long is sit on buffzone.com and spew garbage about the CU program. And you're pissed that someone said something bad about your sooners. YOU ARE A JOKE.
Bob Stoops is a good coach. To bad he was out coached in the fiesta bowl. Wow that one must have stung for the sooner nation. I bet you cried yourself to sleep in your mom's basement curled up tight in your batman sheets. I pose a question, how do you actually have time to spend all day writing posts on a CU web site? You truly are a sorry character.
Coach Hawkins and AD Mike Bohn have brought pride back to Boulder. I always disliked Barnett while at was at school at CU. The Buffs have a bright future ahead. No matter what they will fight like hell on Saturday against the sooneers. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER!

Wow I am getting really tired of having to listen to WhosYourDaddy and 2ndbuff, they must be husker fans, cause no CU fan could be that annoying.
First off, Hawkins was a top 10 quarterback coming out of highschool. He holds almost every HS record in Idaho right now. Yes he is short, but he is a knowledgable quarterback! Being short may make it harder on him, but he should be the starter.
If you think Nelson should be starting over him, then you didn't go to any practices, because Nelson is not a better QB. Ballenger is a True Freshmen, why would you waste season with him when he can sit on the bench and learn, and compete next year with better recruits. Hawkins probably should have been starting last year, but it wasn't worth wasting a year.
One last thing, let me remind you the QB decision was the Off Coord. choice, not coach Hawk, because he knew he would have some bias. Hawkins deserves to be the QB right now.
WhosYourDaddy and 2ndbuff go back to Lincoln, were tired of listening to your crap around here. You probably thought Cox should have been the QB last year, shows how smart you are!

I just ridiculous that you are talking so much crap about Hawkins 4 games into the season. The kid has played well. He lead the team to a come-back win over CSU. His crappy WR dropped 400 yards and 3TD worth of perfect passes against ASU. He did struggle against FSU, but when you have no running game, a fast team like that will pick you apart. Last week he threw for almost 300 yards, and had 3 TD's.
I already hear you saying he has thrown interceptions. Yes he has, he's a FRESHMEN. Bradford has thrown interceptions too!
How bout we talk about your FUSKERS. The team that almost lost to a team that got the butts kicked by Miami-Ohio earlier this year. Giving up 40 points to Ball State, what a great D! I can drop Fusker bombs all day, just like you can drop Buff bombs!

Ok I lied, I have another comment. Ok I will take my "get a life" comment back, I apologize for that one!
Pure football talk: Hawk took over a program that you could call high profile, I guess, but we might as well been division 2. Our recruiting classes the last two years Barnett was here were some of the worst in the country. Hawk is having to pick up the pieces, piece by piece!
The guy has had one season to recruit that is it, and of those recruits, we have two true freshmen WR that are both playing, and pretty good. Two of the most highly recruited OL in the nation, and quite a few other starting true freshmen. All of them are starting over Juniors and Seniors, because they are more talented! Also there are rumors about the best RB in the nation may coming here next year. A RB being recruited by Florida, USC, and UCLA. So he is recruiting, but any Division 1 coach will tell you it takes time.
Cody has done nothing but help the team win, and he should be the starter!
I don't care if your a Husker fan or a Buff fan. But if your a Buff fan have some character and back your team, don't just bash them over and over!
CU beating OU is a slim possibility, but in college football anything is possible!
A true fan is there during the good times and the bad times. Anyone of us will tell you last year sucked. However there was not a single point in the season when I said "I wish we had Barnett." Barnett was a horrible coach and person. I will back Hawk no matter what, and I beleive he has a long tenure ahead of him at CU.
Once again, GO BUFFS!

WOW, a questions mark after that, are you kidding! The guy only covered up 3-4 raps by his players! Oh and then when Katie Hnida accused players of raping and sexually assulting her, his response was "she couldn't kick the ball thru the upright, she was horrible." Um wait Barnett, we were talking about her getting rapped, not how good of a player she was.
Yeah Barnett is a great guy!
Posted by walto_clown on September 26, 2007 at 3:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Ah yes, Coach Barnett. I didn't think I'd find myself in the position of defending him, but, here it goes. None of the recruits who caused problems during visits were invited back. With the players he defended (Katie aside) he was only fullfilling his obligation to provide advocacy for that player (he has to look parents in the eyes while recruiting). When charges were actually leveled (as I believe they were in Colt Brennan's case, though not sure) he sent the player packing because they failed to meet team obligations. What he said about Katie was inappropriate by any standard. However it was in direct response to a question regarding her skills as a kicker (question #29 of 29 questions--you seldom hear the responses to the other 28). He was a known disciplinarian who may have allowed a few things slip under the radar and failed to anticipate their significance. He ws also a little disorganized and didn't appear to be process oriented. He should have been fired for his (our) team's performance at the end of the 2005 season if for no other reason. I wish he hadn't taken the 3million, but that was the Regent's (or Dick Tharp's) oversight, not his.
You can't overestimate the challenge to recruiting that "scandal" created.
Moving on: If you're critical of Hawk's (yes, I'm a big fan) performance, please place your views in appropriate context of recruiting challenges. Also, he's making a third the salary of coaches at other "high profile" programs. GO BUFFS (top ten finish in 09).
Posted by skibumm on September 26, 2007 at 3:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
You can defend him if you want, but he did not act appropriately. Not all the recruits were not asked back, Clyde Surrell played football for CU, and he is dealing with alligations right now.
Hawk has a challenge no question, and I think he is up to it. I have complete faith in the guy! He has already restored pride in the program again, for players and fans. Something that had disappeared during the "scandal" area.

As I said before, if in 2 years there are no better QB's on the roster than I will say your nepetism has basis but until then Hawkins is the best QB on the roster.

Just because I think He's poor fit for the Buffs and White is a better QB than Little Hawk and the Sooners are going to run the score up on the Buffs this Saturday gives you no right to start with the misconduct.. posted by 2ndbuff
I, for one love the way you mix apples and oranges. 70 to 3. Remember that one? And you are worried because of Hawk the Sooners are going to run it up on the buffs? They have run it up on everybody.
You have been dripping with malice for Hawkins since the day he was hired. Either that or you are one ultimately spoiled brat who needs his pacifier yesterday. Your obsession speaks of only one thing and that is revenge on Barnett's behalf.
So what do you want us to call you? Phony jerk is a little mild.

Obssession with Nepotism.... please, how is that the most important thing going on with this team?
These guys are obviously not "fans", well, maybe they cheer for CU, but here they only try and stir up trouble. One out of every 5 or so posts actually is worthwhile, but to be so blinded by the nepotism charge is silly. 2ndbuff loves to trot out the Brian White card, the other backup QB's charge, etc. He has failed to respond to any charges about how White has performed since leaving CU, and about how this offense is so complicated it takes a year (at least!) to learn it. I mean, some of the WR's etc. still don't run correct routes (I am looking at YOU Celestine!), and they only have to know a handful of plays compared to the QB. When CU hired Mr. Hawkins, they knew what they were getting. He has one of the most complicated offenses in college football. The fact taht everywhere he has been things have improved each year shows that the man knows what he is doing.
To throw all these accusations out so early makes no sense. Stoops worked a Miracle at OU. Well, no Miracles at CU. Different situation, incredible coach. Hard work is what this mess needs to fix it. Hawk brings that. If in 2 years CU is 6 and 6.... well, then fire the guy!
An offense lives, breathes, and dies via its offensive line. Until Hawk gets this group going how he likes it, CU will not be consistent on Offense. I don't care if our QB is 7'0" tall and runs a 4.2 40 and throws the ball through the windows of the fieldhouse from the opposite 20!
That said, "Colorado Pass Offense - 49th
vs. Oklahoma Pass Defense - 36th". Thanks 2nd buff. I see a glimmer of hope! (sadly, that is the best comparison we will get on the offensive side of the ball!)

Can you imagine if you're a recruit, or say Ryan Miller or Nate Solder, getting chewed out by Cody for not giving him enough time to throw his patented shovel pass. Those guys are a full foot taller than Cody, but because Cody "has the coach's ear" they just have to take it off that little guy.
Cody couldn't play any other position on the field and he can only play QB because his daddy says he can. Most recruits are going to see right through this situation and find some other place to play.

This is ridiculous. The program is on the upswing - slowly but surely - and all some posters want to do is trash and rehash the past mistakes of people not even in the program anymore.
Should we have kept Colt Brennan ? sure, but they couldnt in the climate his allegations produced. Brian White ? rumored to have a drug problem that left him on a six day binge BEFORE he left the team ? ( just a rumor through the training staff, I cant verify personally....) no thanks. B-Jax ? alot of family and personal issues, which should be his priority. But if he isnt eligible, as the staff probably knew he wouldnt be, the qb change was warranted.
a few FACTS for the blind: 1. CU was left empty by Barnett and the scandal, they are rebuilding 2. CU will be good again, and soon 3. Hawk is one of the few coaches that could take such a daunting challenge ( as corny as he is and all is another matter) 4. The A.D. is doing the right things
As a first hand witness to the Huskers of the early 90's and all the garbage they pulled in Lincoln, there are alot of things fans dont know about how programs operate and deal with the relative stupiidty of 17-22 year old kids. NU sweeps things under the rug - "Lancaster county pre-trial diversion program" is NU study hall, a shelter for kids who would never face the type of consequences Sipili just has. CU is doing the right things with very little margin for error - it will pay off.
And dont even bring up OU - they cheat at ever level, from recruiting to program management. Most programs do. Kids with integrity will be coming to CU for an EDUCATION & FOOTBALL - not to OU for under the table money and free grades on their way to the NFL.
Id rather have a quality 8-9 win a year program that puts kids at the next level occasionally than a factory like OU that is blind to integrity and ethics.

Yes 2ndbuff, there are linebackers in the NFL who played at OU (none of whom are doing much of anything, just for the record), but what Snowbuff is pointing out is that your post insinuates that no Buff linebackers end up playing on Sundays.
You know, Buff linebackers like Matt Russell, or Ted Johnson, or Chad Brown, or Alfred Williams. Want more recent examples? Hannibal Navies, Abraham Wright, Jashon Sykes, Sean Tufts, and Brian Iwuh are all in the pros or were in the pros within the past couple of years.

It's not the coaches at OU, it's the system, the boosters and the athletic department. I'm afraid it's only a matter of time.

You have to admit that Kelvin Sampson was pretty unfront about his own son playing on his team. He said he wanted to give him a scholarship and let him play but his son just didn't have the size, speed, (and the arm strength :-) just kidding) to play in the Big XII. You have to admire that kind of honesty. As we all know, some father/coaches have a pretty hard time doing so.

One other thing, in case you didn't know, Sampson's kid is "nearly six feet tall!"

Forget about John Major, the the CU staff has their sights set on a top QB recruit ... Drew Hawkins (see today's sports section - it's the first time a 2A team has ever been featured so prominantly in the Camera.)
Don't worry if you haven't heard about Drew you'll soon know his record all the way back to grade school, compliments of his dad!

Wow, a WhosYourDaddy comment regarding the fact that Dan Hawkins has children that play football??? No way!!!
Really, I'm astonished. What's next, Al Sharpton making a statement about racism? How about Rush Limbaugh making a statement about Al Sharpton? Honestly, I feel like the world's just been turned on its head.
