CU veterans instill magnitude of Nebraska rivalry

Colorado linebacker Jordon Dizon had heard a lot of talk about the intensity and passion behind the Colorado-Nebraska rivalry during his true freshman season in 2004, but it didn't resonate with him until he encountered two little old ladies in Memorial Stadium.

Walking out of the locker room and onto the field that day, Dizon said he saw the two women yelling at CU players and "chucking tomatoes" at the Buffs.

"Once I saw that I knew this was a real rivalry, from then on I knew it was a great rivalry," Dizon said Monday.

The Buffs and Cornhuskers will meet at 10 a.m. Friday at Folsom Field in their annual grudge match. It will be the first time in the history of the rivalry both teams will enter with losing re-cords. The winner will become bowl-eligible.

The contest means so much to veterans in the CU program that members of the senior class have been taking turns addressing the team after practices and meetings.

Senior wide receiver Dusty Sprague got everyone's attention when he asked for a show of hands Monday of those who have actually been on the field against the Cornhuskers. So few hands were raised it made younger players pay that much more attention to what Sprague had to say. Quarterback Cody Hawkins said listening to tackle Tyler Polumbus talk about what the game means to him got his blood boiling.

"Because he's grown up a Buff, he's a second generation Buff so the Colorado-Nebraska game has always meant a lot to him," Hawkins said.

Dizon said he took his turn last week and made it clear what standard he expects from his teammates in preparation.

"If you don't get up for this, if you don't play your best in practice or study the most, you are not a true Buffalo because this is Nebraska," he said.

Wheatley in doubt

Coach Dan Hawkins said during his weekly press conference he believes senior cornerback Terrence Wheatley will be able to play Friday.

Wheatley sounded considerably less sure. Wheatley said he has been unable to do anything more than light jogging since he fractured a bone in his left big toe against Missouri on Nov. 3. He said he will try to practice today and should have a better idea of his availability.

Notable

Former Chicago Bears defensive back Doug Plank will serve as a radio analyst for the SportsUSA Radio broadcast of the game. Plank played on the 1985 Super Bowl championship team in Chicago with CU linebackers coach Brian Cabral. ... Officials reported 5,000 tickets remain for the game. Most are end zone seats where CU students normally sit. There will be far fewer students than normal Friday with this being the second year CU students have received the entire Thanksgiving week off. ... With no classes scheduled this week, the Buffs are practicing at 10 a.m., the same time Friday's game will start.

There is no way two old ladies threw tomato's at the players in Nebraska Nation. Thats totally fabricated. If you have to fabricate stories to get your team ready to go, that fine. But we dont need fabrication. You have your proud CU student body to thank for that.
Your worried about tomatoes, (that dont exist) and our fans are worried for our lives when coming to CU.

They weren't actually little old ladies. It was the pink skirts defense throwing them.

Hilarious kimfan.

Urban myths are perpetuated over and over on the internet about what CU fans do to your classy little fuskers- but Dizon (one seriously good person) tells a story that REALLY happened and you have the balls to call BS?

Man- you fuskers really do live in your own little world.

I've been to Lincoln for a game. As much as they love their field I don't see them damaging it with veggies. I think it's made up as well. I can't remember their student section being removed for bad sportsmanship, snowballs thrown at their opponents bench and field goal kickers, etc.. There's a reason the TV guys applaud their classy fans and just making up stories doesn't make the things we do look any better. It is what it is.

Man, watching the Nebraska myth collapse is more and more fun each day. Kimfan, killscum (who's since been disappeared), NCHusker, johnschmitt... I've yet to read a single post about football from any of you jokers, just insults and whining.

Seriously. Given the direction Nebraska football is going ya'll need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

I hope this does get the Buffs ready to play. I'm Looking forward to a good game on Friday. After Nebraska beats Co., we'll have a coors to celebrate! Got the tomatoes ready. lol

I was there and I saw the batteries, balled up papers, cups, and more fly in Husker Fans directions. Sorry folks, it's no urban legend...you really had that little class THAT YEAR. I would assume things will be better this year since as so much attention was brought to the situation.

Two Rival Big 12 teams fighting for the Bowl Eligibility...should make for a fun Turkey Hangover Friday. Joe Ganz throws for 400 and runs for another 25.

So those stories about Mo Purify wanting to fight the fans and death threats being phoned in to the defensive coordinator were made up by Dizon as well? Thanks for clearing that up.

C'mon. Fact: CU's fan base has its share of classless morons. Fact: So does every other program in the country, including Nebraska. So this myth that the Husker Nation is so pure? Complete BS, as is becoming more and more evident with each successive corn boy loss.

Talk about fabricated...

Here's a serious question for our Husker friends lurking around:

Joe Ganz is off to a pretty impressive start, by anyone's measure. So how come he's been buried on the bench for four years? Really. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but I'm really curious as to why, if he's as good as ya'll want to believe and might be, he's been on the sidelines with a clipboard and headphones?

Need fuel for the team, here you go.

I'm from Chicago and didn’t really have an idea what the CU-NE rivalry was about until my first year at CU in 1995 when NE came to Boulder. CU lost that game but some NE punk decided to spray paint the CU sign out on 36 in red graffiti. Winning is winning and hats of to you for doing it in another’s home but it’s another thing when you have to rub it in somebody’s face; that’s just rotten tomatoes.

I want to thank that person because you turned an indifferent student into a rabid fan with your little can. I now have 2 favorite teams; CU and whoever is playing NE.

I hope for a CU victory Friday but I’m more excited about the cage-style death match between my most beloved and my most hated teams; loser goes home and the winner moves on.

GO BUFFS!!!!!!!

Good comment Rodrigo. I've spent many years following Husker football (sadly, all of my relatives, even parents, went to university there - I was the blacksheep CU grad), and their fans are the kinder, gentler type they want to portray ONLY when they are winning. As soon as the losses start piling up (e.g. 2004), they'll start trash talking, tossing tomatoes, etc., same as any other fans. BTW - I wore my black and gold CU sweatshirt there for the KSU game last week (stuck in Lincoln during the annual pheasant hunt...) and took plenty of abuse. It was great!

Jimmy,

Nice. You've lived the dark side and emerged a better man for it.

Here's a q for fellow Buff fans (I'm just gonna ignore the corn pones for the rest of the day): What's your favorite CU-Nebraska moment?

Mine: 1986. Jeff Campbell on the reverse - man, from where I was sitting in the student section it seemed like the whole world was moving in slow motion. TD Colorado and a dagger in the hearts of the Husker Nation.

Rodrigo,

That's a very legitimate question about Ganz. But remember Zac Taylor was Big XII offensive player of the year last year, so it's hard to criticize his selection as the starting QB. Whether Sam Keller deserved the nod over Ganz this year is a matter of opinion. I like what Ganz has done in his two starts, but I think it's really had a lot to do with a change in Nebraska's play selection. They are actually throwing the ball DOWN THE FIELD now, instead of just sideways, sideways, sideways. If Callahan would have allowed Keller to do that instead of sticking rigidly to his precious West Coast Offense, Keller might have had more success. In fact, whenever Keller got the ball this year with the clocking winding down in the first half, he took the team downfield for a score. (Another good reason for Callahan to stop overcoaching and just stay out of the way.) But of course Nebraska's biggest problems have been on defense, and that's a whole different conversation.

Posted by rodrigo on November 20, 2007 at 8:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks, Joe. Didn't mean to question choice of Taylor, more that of Keller, who seemed the annointed heir apparent as soon he said he was leaving ASU for bigredland. More evidence for Callahan's swift kick out the door, I imagine.

Just a few notes and observations.

First, if this is such a hot rivalry, how come the Buffs are trying to convince each other it is. Kind of sad. This game is a rivalry. Buff fans got that started and now the playes have to be convinced it's a big one.

Secondly, win or lose at CU, this wasn't a good year for Nebraska. I want to beat CU as bad as I want to beat KSU, KU, MU, Texas...etc. I wouldn't even trade wins for a victory at OU.

Thirdly, CU fans spend more time hating NU than loving their own team, unless a sell out streak has started and I am unaware, plus I have first hand witnessed CU fans booing during the Buff player intros because NU was huddling up to head to the locker room during pregame prior to our last game at Boulder. Oh, yea, and the student section was ejected.

SO, this year do something new, cheer your own team all the way. Want wins every week, not just NU week. Coach Hawk has asked for the support of the fans. Give the support. Wear black and gold and show pride and hope that someday, we can get back to playing a game as meaningful to this rivalry as the KU-MU border war is this year.

T, thanks for preachin', brother, but save the sanctimonious crap for your fellow Huskers fans.

Consider for a second where you're posting. Consider for a second some of the vitriol that's been posted by your crowd (and since been removed because it wasn't fit for public consumption). You came here. We didn't go to you. So lessons from you about sportsmanship given what's been going on in Lincoln this year seem sort of disingenuous if not hypocritical.

Your post is EXACTLY the type of better-than-thou bunk that makes the Husker Nation purity notion laughable.

Posted by Buffman on November 20, 2007 at 8:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Anyone that would even try and make a comparison between CU and NU fans obviously have never been to Lincoln for a game. I have shown up in Lincoln sporting my Buff gear and have never even heard one comment (in fact I was invited in to tailgate with some Husker fans). CU fans have to rank among the most classless fans in the country. If you don't believe me, show up to any game wearing CSU or NU attire. You will be harassed more than you can even imagine. That of course is the case if CU has a decent season because once the Buffs start losing, no one shows up to the games. This is coming from a Buff alum.

Posted by renglish5 on November 20, 2007 at 8:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's funny how NU fans get labeled as not forgetting the past, holding on to the good times, etc. But it's the same everywhere - right Rodrigo and Jimmy? 1986 and 2001 are ancient history in college football.

And as for rabid fans - CU "Fans" - or at least the 1/2 or 3/4 stadium full you get each home game have done enough to expose themselves for what they are... Short memory? The 2005 game spoke volumes as to what you're all about - lobbing plastic bottles, fights, etc. The same holds true for the CU/CSU rivalry - why do they have to kick the game off at 10 a.m. MT? For fear of the CU fans getting out of hand.

Yeah don't get me wrong, Rodrigo. I don't think Keller lived up to all the hype either. But I really think he was hamstrung by Callahan's overly-complicated, horizontal passing game. Allowing Ganz to throw the ball vertically has helped Mo Purify be more productive, and has also opened up the running Huskers' game. But of course I understand that this resurgance happened against a pretty weak K-State defense, and a Kansas defense that didn't much care how many yards or points it gave up (why would you, when you are on pace to score 100?). Thanks for the good discussion. Looking forward to a good game on Friday. It's a good matchup, despite the fact that no championships are on the line.

Posted by AmesHusker on November 20, 2007 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Rodrigo - your question about why Ganz has been buried in the depth chart is one many Husker fans have also asked. No-one knows for sure, but ,my gut tells me that Cally pretty much guaranteed the starting spot to Keller in order to get him to transfer. I have no proof of that - just a gut feeling. Cally's personel decisions have been questionable all year. He thinks too hard.

Posted by rodrigo on November 20, 2007 at 9:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

right, renglish. That's what fans do, Nebraska, CU, Notre Dame, Michigan... folks from App. State will talk for years to come about whuppin' the Wolverines.

And there's no arguing that CU has a rabid fan base. Fact is, they don't. Students will go home for Thanksgiving. And that's a bad thing? I dunno, from the perspective of college football, I suppose. But from a larger perspective, I doubt it. I love the Buffs but I'd rather see my family if I'm forced to make a choice. Ridicule that, condemn me for that if you want but I think mine's the healthier decision.

Regardless, it's a football game. You don't get points for bringing more fans.

Make no mistake: CU fans have been as classless as any. 2005 was a disgrace and I hope it never happens again. Death threats are another degree of classless all together.

Anyone, Buff or Husker, who feels his manhood validated by what a team he supports does on the field is pathetic.

Now, can we get back to talkin' about football?

Posted by AmesHusker on November 20, 2007 at 9:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

And for the record Buff fans, I say feel free to pile on us Husker fans while we are down. We should expect no less after years of dishing it out. We are no different from other fans - we have some good and some bad. Hopefully more good than bad, though.

Remember though - most of the opposing team's fans that post on articles like this are the radical fans. They don't represent the majority. So please take their bravado with a grain of salt.

As for Friday's game - I really have no idea what to expect. Could be a laugher with CU winning big, could be a laugher with NU winning big, or it could be an ugly game that goes down to the wire. Hopefully it will be a game we all remember for a long, long time!!

Huskers have the #1 strength of schedule according to ncaa teams with at least 9 inter-division games sorted on past opposition, valid thru 17 nov. So, they are basically the number 1 team in the nation right now. I mean you can't argue there.

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2007/Inter...

No, seriously folks. I'm excited to watch the game, I know both sides have had bad luck and are gunning for a bowl. Hopefully we'll see some fun football. Go Big Red!

Nothing wrong with spending time with family... My comments were more about the overall attendance fans there have - regardless of the Thanksgiving holiday. And CU always plays a good non-conference schedule. Look at the next 3 years - West Viriginia, Hawaii, Cal, Georgia.

Now about the game - it could go either way. I'll say 31-24 red. You?

I am pretty sure the Nebraska team thinks its a rivalry. I still remember the "Return to Order" Tshirt one of the players was flashing on the sidelines last year (or was it 2 years ago?). The record of the last 6 years reflects that. The greater success of the Buffs since Dr. T retired is really galling to their fan base at large.

The thing about Nebraska is that I think the team would be perfect running a West-Virgina Style spread offense. Those guys run run run. You won't get a Pat White or Steve Slaton every year, but I see no reason why Eric Crouch couldn't have been a good spread option running QB. I just think NU could recruit well for that system.

Oh ya, and that defense... what the hell?

renglish, I'm not big on predictions cuz folks who make them often end up looking foolish - though I do have to give it the Mizzou fan who showed up here and predicted the Tigers would beat CU 52-10. I want that guy picking my portfolio.

Anyway, either way is pretty right on but I'm leaning more toward Ames's suggestion it won't be close... I see whoever wins winnin' big.

Rodrigo - I really don't think a win against CU can save Cally's job. Even if it's a blowout. Osborne has made it clear that some fundamental changes will be made to the program - these changes will reverse some of the changes BC has made since he came on board. What's important to Tom is not important to Bill, so I don't see how they can co-exist (for everyone else, that means "live together")

Sounds like hlads has never been to a game in Boulder. Beer bottles? Get a grip. The problem with Husker fans is that they are so smug and arrogant, and for what? Their team that has been in steady decline for the past 6 years, talk about being delusional and living in the past.

Another problem is that just because you wear gear that is red with an N automatically makes you a football genius. Part of the deep dislike for Nebraska fans comes from your inability, as a group, to understand that you are just the fans. You are not the team. But when things get going bad you whine like babies needing a diaper change. Well that diaper is stinking in Lincoln.

You all may very well win this weekend enjoy the trip back to desolate farmland. Ultimately it doesn't matter squat, regardless of the number of national championships you have won or may win in the future, as a group you all are already one of the most loathed fan bases in college football.

Hlads, put down your crack pipe! "What do you expect though when there is nothing to do in Boulder." Are you kidding me? Most of the trouble we have selling out Folsom is there is TOO MUCH to do in Boulder and the surrounding mountains. Duh.

As I student, back in the '90s, I always visited my mother at Thanxgiving. It's a long break, and Boulder is dead during that time (oh yeah, and the food was better). Its an unfortunate scheduling quirk having the game this week.

Time to pay back Callahan and the Fuskers for last year. I remember the fake punt, I remember that score. I'll be eating cold turkey with my cold-blooded revenge on Friday.

Let me count the number of times I have gone to a NE newspaper/fan site to comment on their boards, or read an article. ZERO. Isn't it deer season there? Find something else to do.

Can we get over this fans debate? Yes, Nebraska has more fans, that is well documented, as are the reasons. And I agree, 2005 was a disgrace and I hope it never happens again. But can we please stop with the stupid stereotypes and get back to the game? This game is going to be decided in the trenches. The Buffs' offensive line has to (and should) dominate the Huskers D-line to establish the ground game, and CU's front four must get pressure on Ganz. Given the poor state of the Nebraska defense, I see this one as being close through the first 2-3 quarters, with the Buffs outlasting the Huskers at the end. 24-14 CU.

I've given up reading all the rumors and theories of why so-and-so would be the perfect candidate. I trust Osborne to make that decision as he has more football knowlege than I could ever dream of having. I'll just sit back and watch contently, knowing that the end of the current debacle is only days away.

True, if you guys play like that we should score more than 24 points, but I'm also allowing for the new trend of our guys completely shutting down in the 3rd quarter. Not sure what exactly is being discussed at halftime, but it needs to be changed.

ColoradoPaul, to say that the Husker fans are "loathed" is absolutely rediculous. You are the type of Buff fan that makes us look bad. The only people that "loathe" the Husker fans are the fans that support an inferior program. CU students and fans should strive to reach the support and classiness that their fans show. Even after they have suffered some of the worst losses in Husker history and all their long standing records are falling, they are still filling the stands. Check what the attendance at Folsom was by the end of last year. It would be an understatement to say that we would love to have the history and tradition that the Huskers have (although Bill is well on his way to destroying much of that tradition). Hopefully it will be a good game and our fans decide to show the Huskers that Coloradoans can be as welcoming as the people of Nebraska.

One other thing....when I mentioned the booing of Nebraska during the Huskers pre game huddle, I noted it only because of the timing. CU players on the field, who couldn't see the NU huddle, may have thought for a moment that CU fans were booing them. NICE.

CU fans are excited about the direction of our team and 100% behind our head coach. Nebraska is a national joke 1) as a state and 2) as a football team. I can't wait to watch Cody have a field day against the "Black Skirts" defense. It will be hard to top 73 points, but its definitely possible against the worst defense in modern football history.

I get so sick and tired about hearing about CU fans... It's true, we have a notoriously drunk and belligerent student section who doesn't see the team through the tough times... But so what?? I'm not going to let a bunch of out of state, spoiled losers define this program. I'm a 3rd generation CU Buff, born and raised in Colorado, and for every idiot fan we have, there is another responsible, engaged, loyal follower to cancel them out... So why don't we quit letting all the idiots define us?

And enough of the holier than thou crap from the Nebraska fans. You're starting to see the ugly side of a fan base when your team loses. I don't recall any death threats coming in when CU struggled. And the fact of the matter is, there are drunken belligerant fans everywhere you go, including Lincoln, including Austin, including Ft. Collins, including Tallahassee-- Been there, seen them, so save us your self-righteousness bits.

Rivalry? No way. Let's face it. It's nothing more than simple buffoonery. (Now that's intersesting.) Buffonery is defined as foolish or playful behavior or practice. None of this behavior existed pre-McCartney. Mac felt he had to invent something - no matter how superficial - to get his players fired up to play Nebraska. As a result it spread to some fans who were just looking for such an opportunity do display buffoonery. It is purely one-sided. Nebraskans don't hate Colorado. Unfortunately, that will be McCartney's legacy. A man who preached Christian principles, but ended up speading hate.

"Sal's dead, go big red" and any NU person has the rocks to state they're better fans than anyone? Come on, get with reality.

It's ludicrous to even postulate NU fans are better. If you're an NU fan and you're reading this, your participating in, not rooting for your team, but rooting against another team which makes you the worst fan by defination.

av, so seriously, your opinion's in. Now what? You gonna just keep going on and on? You want us to do something? Cancel the game? Get you an official apology from the Gov? Send you a box of hankies? Condemn (again) fans who act poorly?

Can we move on?

It sounds like NU fans all have agoraphobia but yet plenty show up in Boulder - what gives? If we're so bad no one will come to our stadium yet it's packed with red every year after turkey, then what's happening? Is my turkey-addled brain interpreting gold for red? How can I make this problem go away?

It's all a myth that we're worse fans than others and many CU fans on this site are perpetuating it. I've been treated horribly in almost all visiting stadiums and I've also been able to turn the situation and even received free drinks because of it. So maybe the problems not with the home fans but the visiting fans. I've also bought KSU fans beers in Boulder after the game because they were interesting people who weren't myopic.

I also witnessed an NU fan rooting for USC when they came to town and drilled CU. What's this about rooting for your team and not against another?

av8 - Sorry you had such a bad experience here, but it's unfair to characterize all of us as such. I shared my grill with some Mizzou fans a few weeks ago, and if need be I'll do the same this Friday. And it's not like Boulder is the only place with a few bad fans. The night before the KU game in Lawrence last year, I had a good time at one of the bars sharing beers with some KU students. The next day after the game, I was cussed out walking back to my car, and this was after KU beat us. But I definitely don't think all KU fans are like that, and I would definitely go back. The point is, you're always going to find bad and good, no matter where you go.

So 1970 is the one throwing the tomatoes at our players.

I'm sorry, I'm all out of medals for your treatment of Ricky Williams in the past.

Truth is your fans spewed hate to Sal Aunese and reveled in his premature death. You are the worst fans of all time for an unforgivable offense.

Bill - Facts or opinion? Judging by some of the posts on here, I'd say there are a few Nebraska fans who don't think too highly of Colorado. And if you're going to cite the behavior of the CU students, when liquored up they pretty much hate whoever CU is playing that weekend. But you being much older than I, you obviously have a different perspective. Just don't start throwing the word facts around too loosely.

During the 1990 national title season, some Husker fans put a sign on the side of I-80 as you entered into Lincoln that read: "Sal Aunese is dead, go big red." That is fact, not a myth, and is a major testament to the so called 'classy' Husker fans. After that, you deserve batteries and the like tossed at your empty heads.

Whew! I'm apparently getting on the page late today...so much venom. I don't even know where to start with this crowd of yahoos.

Husker fans. I admire your program. Even with the recent decline, your school has established the standard for college football in the last 40 years. A couple of things to consider, however. You have a few ugly fans. The "Sal's Dead, go big red" sign posted next to the "Welcome to lincoln" sign in 1992 was offensive. A bad fan posted it. Lots of bad fans drove by it. I took it down. Also, Boulder is a nice place to live. Deal with it. It's beautiful and there's a lot of great things to do in the region. I'm sure Lincoln is nice in its own way. I've been there a few times. Some people like quiet and flat, and I respect that. Finally, bong-smoking hippies tend not to be violent. Your characterizations of CU fans don't really ring true. Is it one or the other? I'm not sure. Our student section has received some bad press. I used to be one of those guys. I grew up. Perhaps part of the difference is that the majority of the Nebraska fan base doesn't appear to be students or graduates--just people from Nebraska. Maybe your student students are more mature...maybe less passionate. I don't know.

I do recognize that CU tends to place more value on the "rivalry" than NU. Fine. You can go back to longing for your lost rivalry with Oklahoma. I would point out, however, that nebraska fans have only torn down goal posts (as I understand it) following victories over two teams. CU and OU. Is it a rivaly? I don't know, you tell me...you're on our boards. The few fans that have been over here have been mostly ugly.

av8ter'70, I don't believe you when you say that you were "threatened" by adult CU fans as a child. It just isn't something that adults in civilized society do. I think that perhaps you built up some benign incidents in your mind to support your viewpoint. Don't bother to respond, I have few doubts that you actually believe the lies your spreading.

Finally, I wore a T-shirt bearing the legend "F@#% Nebraska" to Lincoln in 1992. Sorry about that. Especially to those folks that had children. Like I said--I've grown up.

Looking forward to a great game Friday. Go Buffs!

I went to the CU/NE game in 99 and never had experienced anything so negative. The adult fans were fine, but the CU students were totally obnoxious. Almost got in a fight with CU student while trying to watch the final part of the game at the Harvest House. I swore then that I would never go back and haven't and won't.

True there are jerks everywhere, but NE fans have a reputation as some of the best in the country. This is mentioned on almost every national football telecast I have watched over the years.

Now for the game...I am hoping it is a close game, played hard and hopefully a NE win. Then, on Saturday, Dr. Tom announces that BC is fired and on Monday...hopefully Bo Pelini is named the new headcoach.

Good luck CU, let's have a good game.

Buffman learn to spell. Your fans when away from the stadium are awful, arrogant bullies. It seems most of the Husker fans in Colorado are mostly anti-Buffs, that's why you see the hippie references.

The Buffs contend with the Broncos, Avalanche, Nuggets, and now the Rockies for fans. (Not to mention CSU & AFA) When you are the only game in "town" (Nebraska) worth watching it makes establishing and maintaining a program easier.

The CU game may never be a "rivalry" in your eyes and unfortunately that will mean the Thanksgiving tradition that Coach McCartney helped to build will die after the 2009 season. This game will be just another tough Big XII contest held on Saturday.

We may lose the game but ultimately we will win the battle, because CU under Hawkins will emerge as the premier team in the North and play a meaningful game in January within 2 years. The Huskers will rebuild, and rebuild...

Rivalry? Nebraska is 46-17-2 against CU I would call that domination. You CU fans need to put down the bong. You want to laugh at the Husker program going down when Nebraska has won 7 of the last 10 against you? Nebraska has pounded the Buffs a combined 67-17 in the last two down years.
Go Huskers

I'm looking forward to this game. Sucks both teams are playing like such champs so far this year. walto_clown, way to pretend to be unbiased.

NU lost a rivarly that was considered one of the top rivalries in all of college football. We'll get used to this rivalry...in time. I think both teams need to improve before it gains momentum. Plus the 46-17-2 Nebraska lead in this "rivalry" needs evening out, but I think you're on your way to doing that.

To say that your fans are receiving "bad press"??? You really only get that for one reason...bad fans. I got nailed by oranges way back when, and you know what, it happens everywhere. Nebraska fans are more behaved I believe, at least inside the stadium, but not completely innocent.

I think my biggest problem with CU fans is that I think they are all on this site. From what I understand, there are still 5,000 tickets left, most of which are in the student section!! And I don't want to hear about how all the kids are back home due to the holidays. If you're a fan, SHOW UP!

If there's one thing this conference (by that, I mean the North) needs is a good rivalry, and I think this will get the most attention. I think Hawkins is a good coach and will bring back the Buffs. Hopefully Nebraska will find someone, anyone that the state can be happy with for more than 3 games before they fire him.

Goooooooooooooooooo Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig Reeeeeeedddddddddddd!

Let me start by saying I am a Husker fan. I grew up in Nebraska and have always loved the team.
Colorado, though, is also a very cool team.
I refuse to buy into the, you have to hate every other team mentality.
First of all, the location of the university is awesome. I love Denver and the mountians and have visited many, many times. Always get good treatment. People are very hospitable and down to earth, at least in my experience. The CU football team has a lot of cool traditiions. The fight song is great and the fan participation in that is very cool to see. There have been a lot of great players there. I always liked Darian Hagan. When I was in high school I used to wish I could run half as fast as No. 3. And his pitches on the option were nothing if not perfect.
I like the current team. They have shown a lot of resilience. Coach Hawk seems like a great guy. I wish the Buffs nothing but the best and hope to see a great game on Friday. Wish I could be there. Will settle for watching it on TV.
Go Big Red and good luck to the Buffs.

Guess Im late to the fan debate today too.

I am a lifelong Buff fan and Colorado native, played college ball in Lincoln ( at the OTHER school in town) and even attended UNL for a time. 4 years there, friends on both sides and coached by former Huskers permits me to say.....

YES, this is a rivalry, both sides hate one another and both sides have classless fans at times. Both sides also have true fans that have class. There have been good teams and awful teams.
Who cares?

NU spends alot of time reliving their past glory and denying that anyone is a rivalry. But both teams are struggling right now, going in opposite directions ( CU up, NU down). Id love nothing more than for both teams to be ranked the way KU-MU are right now and have a good rivalry game.

But it isnt happening anytime soon. NU can deny the rivalry all they want (like they have for last 20 years) and cite all time records (padded by their 70s-and 80s dominance of everyone) and bemoan fans (when I have seen trashed students in Lincoln do the same things trashed students in Boulder do) and they can defend their grandmas ( who throw tomatoes) and cry, cry, cry how life isnt fair because their beloved Red ( an obnoxious color- especially with a hangover.....)isnt the dominant machine that gives them reason to live any longer.......and then WHAT?

oh yeah, the game......Both sides have their problems, but their are no points for history, better fans or anything else. CU-NU dont like each other and NU will hate us even more after we knock them out of yet another bowl and get yet another coach fired.

BTW Husker nation - talk FOOTBALL or get off the board. Go talk about the good ol days with your buddies at the co-op counter or take your women to a buffet or something. Your excuses are tiring.

Went to the CU-Neb game in I believe it was 96 or 97 in Lincoln. Nebraska was ranked 4th and CU was ranked 5th. My wife and I were in Omaha visiting family. She's from there. Any way we drove to Lincoln and were walking to the stadium before the game with our 10 y.o. son. A group of Husker fan's ran up to us taunting and yelling, threw what was left of his beer at me, called us F ing idiots and pushed me. He found me a little tougher than he thought so he and his buddies ran off. The rest of the game was pretty non eventful other than a few cat calls at us...but the huskers beat us 17-12.
I bring this up as further testament to the fact that Nebraska fan's are incorrectly referenced as the "best in the nation"
They also demonstrated their true colors this year on all the discussion boards. The truth is they are no better than anyone else! To prove it yet again, If the Buffs are winning in the last minute of the game, I am going to walk in the front of the Nebraska fans section and take their picture. If they flip me off.... well... more proof.

Hey Av8tor, as a Mental Health Practitioner you should have a banner year in Lincoln this year!

This is absolutely hilarious...I graduated high school from Colorado and then decided to go to a junior college in Nebraska, ending with my degree from UNL. My freshman year in college I went to Boulder for the game. My buddy talked me into driving because i still had Colorado plates on my car and we figured that the classless fans of Colorado would not bother with one of their own. As if it wasn't bad enough to sit through all the abuse of the fans between my car and the stadium and while i was in the stadium, I got back to my car only to find some obscene figures of speech "keyed" into my rear panels. It cost my over eight hundred dollars to have them removed and only because i brought it back to Nebraska and the owner of the body shop - being a Husker fan, felt badly for me and gave me a deal. The fact of the matter is, Colorado destroyed us on the field that year 62-36 ring any bells??? but the class the fans showed made me vow to never to return to the worthless town of Boulder again

Still, the last time I checked, your little red still have to beat the state school down the road then either Mizzou/Kansas before ya'll even get a sniff of a BCS bowl.

It's up to you, Sam, but I wouldn't get too far ahead of myself given recent history against the Cowboys. And those two losses you've got...ouch.

I also love how CU considers this a rivalry...Nebraska Oklahoma, that is a rivalry. In that instance, the series is at a near tie (not completely one-sided like this one) as well as conference championships and national champinoships. Nebraska fans do not consider this a rivalry because even though you beat us from time to time, you have not been competitive on the stages that we have. Five national championships to your one (which required 5 downs) and I don't even want to mention the difference in conference championships. We let all you fans believe this is a rivalry and always will...THanks for being such a great door mat for us to wipe our feet on

And please... you personally have not been competitive on college football's national stage. The team you support used to be, but until you are listed on the roster, you ain't done squat. Save the we and us for helping out around the house after Thanksgiving dinner is done.

I saw a movie recently called King Corn that said corn growers (they don't call them farmers anymore) work an average of five weeks per year. Maybe that explains why Nebraska fans have the time to post on other school's message boards, etc?

As a CU student I sat with the cup-orange-quiche throwers and yes a good number of CU student fans are spoiled and immature (so many are from out of state with no CU alums in their families, myself included), but I would argue these kids grow into serious fans. It takes time to become a fan if you didn't grow up with a little big red blankie in your crib.

It is unfortunate that we can't all stay in Colorado and fill up Folsom every week, but that doesn't mean we aren't out there cheering for the Buffs!! I've watched the Buffs in CU alum packed sports bars in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

1970...again...a little context please: "I don't believe you when you say that you were "threatened" by adult CU fans as a child. It just isn't something that adults in civilized society do. I think that perhaps you built up some benign incidents in your mind to support your viewpoint." Is actually what I wrote, which I believe reads differently than the sentence that you credited me with, somewhat out of context.

Here's my point. In a civilized society, adults, in broad daylight at a public sporting event don't throw things at children or physically confront or threaten them. I'm well aware that humans behave atrociously in many scenarios...just not usually that one. Sorry I had to spell that out for you. I'd imagine that most folks got it the first time. Your tendency to fixate on one sentence so clearly out of context only supports my image of you as someone who selectively perceives the world to support his/her own agenda. I realize that we all do this to some degree, but you appear to be a special case.

SMILEZ. Thanks for complimenting my attempts to sound unbiased. Who are you? I don't need to pretend to be unbiased for anyone's benefit. I post my opinions on this board nearly every day. How interesting that you think I might be performing for husker fans. Question: If I post on this board and there's no husker fans to read it, does it make a sound? Will you be here the rest of the year to interpret my intentions for me? Trust me...I'm biased. I'm a Buff fan. I stand by everything I wrote in my first post, however.

If being a farmer is really that easy, why don't you try it for a year and see what happens? I give you about 3 weeks before you are bankrupt and running to mommy and daddy for cash. My dad raised corn, soybeans and cattle from age 14 to age 66, and was feeding cattle the day he died. If you live to be 200 years old, you won't work as much or produce as much as he did. Yes, Fanatical...nu's had a lot of ups. However, when this fan noted the prestige of the husker program, I was accused of "pretending" to be unbiased. Then, a bunch of husker fans jumped on the board in an effort to convince me of the very thing to which I'd already admitted.

Two themes prevail from our guests this week.

1. Nebraska has a great tradition. (check)
2. Nebraska doesn't consider the CU game a rivalry. (check)

Copy all. However, there doesn't appear to be a trend which suggests the husker (or CU) fans will actually discuss football any time soon.

I'm sure most of the folks on this board who wear an article of red clothing every day, and drive a red vehicle are very nice people, but you come across as a strange group of little dudes on this chat board... I miss KU week.

Let's face facts here....
Nebraska and Colorado lacks an attractive quality. The reason the game kicks at 10 a.m. MT is so that it can get the heck over with sooner. If the two teams were great and chasing national prizes, that game would go straight to prime time. It has nothing to do with Buff fan being "out of control", whatever the hell that means.
What it has to do with is that, all due respect to Ganz and Hawkins...they aren't Tommie Frazier or Darian Hagan. Now that would have been a fun game to watch. Instead, these two teams will take their average players and play for a bowl, any bowl. I would like to see that change. I would like to see bigger stakes, national storylines. Hopefully both programs are now headed in the right direction. NU getting a different coach and CU building with Coach Hawkins.

Good luck, Colorado With both C.U. and Nebraska going for bowl eligibility, it should make for a great game.. May the better team win. Should be interesting. You all have a point about our NE fans.. a bit spoiled after years of a winning program. Some fans need to get a grip and grow up. The game has changed.

truehusker,

I feel your pain, but the game was scheduled to kickoff at 11am regardless of the greatness of the two teams or the national prominence of the game itself.

Next season the game will KO at 2:30pm

Posted by Fearless on November 20, 2007 at 8:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The Husker-Sooner battle of the Big Reds doesn't need to be an annual game to remain a rivalry.

I remember back from 89-93 when it appeared the Buffs would make this game a rivalry. The Buffs had great teams and won in 89, 90, and tied the Huskers in 91. This carried over until 92 or 93, but then the Huskers ran off 9 wins in a row.

the last 6 seasons have been even with 3 wins each. Another run at a true rival? Maybe. The Buffs will need a win Friday after the Huskers have won the last two matchups to extend this run at a rivalry.

oops, sorry about the history lesson

here's to a great game on Friday

hopefully the Buffs and Huskers can be the highly ranked Jayhawks and Tiggers of 2008.

Posted by Fearless on November 20, 2007 at 9:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

regarding present football talk.........

the game Friday looks to be a matchup of a horrible Nebraska defense vs a horrible Buffalo offense

and a good Nebraska offense vs a very good Buffalo defense

Things look to be somewhat even looking at stats (special teams about the same)

I would give the edge to the Buffalos playing at home, but....

the Huskers seem to have a different look in their eyes since Steve Pederson was fired and Tom Osborne came back to the program.

Rivals or not, there is plenty of motivation for both teams Friday and I expect a good hard fought game full of emotion.

Enjoy!

Well if its not a rivalry, why are all the husker fans here? NU-OU is not a rivalry either.
Lets talk rivalry, how about Alabama vs Auburn, ever been to the Iron Bowl? OSU and Mich anyone?
This Buff fan thinks it is a rivalry because so many fans from both sides get so worked up!

Husker fans get worked up for any game

The Nevada Wolfpack coming to Lincoln was a big deal for Husker fans

but, certainly not a rivalry

Posted by Fearless on November 20, 2007 at 10:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Husker fans are here because Buff fans will respond

Husker fans are here for the discussion. Good, bad, or ugly

Unfortunately the Huskers don't get that as much anymore.

Maybe the Jayhawk fans will learn to talk "smack" after they beat the Tiggers in Arrowhead.

Well Fearless (should be feckless) you are going to be wrong again. Chase Daniel and the Mizzou Tigers are going to shell the JHawks. Sooner Sam will be crying next when they take the Big XII championship. Missouri is easily the class of the league. Reesing is an elusive QB but I will venture a guess that the Tigers will put a spy on him limiting the scrambling that killed the Buffs in Boulder.

It is going to be icy cold on Friday. This will make passing even more difficult, so I don't see the Huskers being able to duplicate their KState effort. The Buffs will dominate time of possession by running the ball. The only thing that can stop Colorado from winning is the Buffs themselves. Let's hope Hawk has them focused and hungry.

Go Buffs!

Gosh, this stuff does not even compare to UA/ASU. That is the defination of hate. I mean the ASU student body chanting PLO, PLO, PLO to Steve Kerr in warm ups after his dad had been killed. Those 2 schools hate each other 365 24 7.
I know good and bad Buff and Husker fans. Yes CU fans can be bad at games but they are kids compared to ASU fans. YIKES!!!
Just as a Big 12 fan hope NU gets a good coach. Grobe would be a great fit in Lincoln. His offense would scare the entire conference. Hawk has CU going the right direction and the bye week will help big time. I feel that Eberhart will kick the winner and Charles will get 150 on the ground!!!
Anyway, The worst day as a BUFF is still better than the best day as a Husker!!!!! GO Buffs.

Looking forward to the game. I see the comments show lots of emotion, and that's what it is all about. All in good fun. Let's enjoy, and get a good CU-NU battle going.

Best of luck to both teams. Play hard, be safe, finish those leftovers after the game.......

Hey Archalon - I am sure that is what every Husker fan looks forward to doing each year...keying the words F*&K NU into the sides of each others cars...not likely but a good excuse to cover up the class you have consistently shown in Boulder

Posted by rodrigo on November 21, 2007 at 9:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

727 (what's the all the flying references in Husker fans names?),

Are you suggesting no Nebraska fan has ever committed a similar act? Cuz lots of evidence to the contrary has already been posted here and I can add more: after that 1986 game I mentioned above, some cornpone slit the tires on my piece-of-crap '82 Fiat and left the note, "Enjoy the win, Buff f*g. It'll be the last."

Seems like another example of the class consistently shown in Boulder - by the little red groupies.

Deal is, I don't tar all Neb. fans with that brush. Fortunately there are plenty - like some of the folks contributing to this post, it seems - who warrant the greater respect given the Cornfed faithful.

Ganz is just a product of a pretty decent offense. Taylor (Big 12 offensive player of the year in 2006). Kellor, on track to break all NU passing records until hurt. But it's not the offense, they score.. including 31 against USC. Its the lack of defense and not being able to adjust. If Hawkins can find one play that works,, he can run it over and over and over all day.. and CU will win.

COPaul,

Mizzou lost to the Sooners because they make mistakes. If they make mistakes in Arrowhead they will lose to the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks don't beat themselves.

Hopefully the Buffs will stop/beat themselves tomorrow. The Huskers are not very good. Not well coached. Make too many mistakes.

the Buffs rushing offense @ 138 yds/game is horrible - good luck

Posted by rodrigo on November 21, 2007 at 11:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

so there it is... I actually think Fearless might have hit on the key question: which is worse, the Buff rushing game or the Nebraska rushing defense? Fear, the average might be atrocious but Hugh's had what, four 100+ rushing games and CU is 3-1 in those games? In other words, the Buffs are capable of running. Haven't seen any evidence that the Huskers could stop av8ter's East High Angels.

Posted by Fearless on November 21, 2007 at 11:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Bufftruth,

It seems to me that Ganz is helped by Shawn Watson taking control of the offensive coaching. Ganz seems to go to Purify more often and go back to things that work. It's my guess that Callahan and Cosgrove have limited roles since Tom Osborne took Steve Pederson's position.

Besides, Ganz has been in the system and knows it better than anyone the past 4 seasons.

I think Ganz passing can be quite effective in cold weather.

I'm hoping for snow.

rodrigo,

hopefully Bo Ruud and the boys are ready to reclaim their Blackshirts.

they do seem to be playing with more fire and with more aggressive schemes in the past couple games.

Hugh's 100+ vs the Sooners is impressive.

The Buffs have been beating themselves lately and not running well. See the game in Ames.

av8ter1970,

"unaggressive, non physical" is a trait of Cosgrove defenses. Ask any badger fan.

it is obviously not a Ruud trait.

Bo saved the game for the Huskers vs Ball State and Iowa state with big plays.

Hopefully Bo lives up to the family name and hits Buffs from the time he gets off the buss until he steps back on the buss Friday.

speakin of Wake and coach Jim Grobe...

mulder1010,

Why would Osborne hire a guy that Cally beat in his own yard?

Who knows? Grobe may be the perfect fit in Lincoln, but he could't beat Cally and Cos.

Posted by Fearless on November 21, 2007 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

av8ter,

I guess we will disagree on this. Look at film a coupe seasons ago of Bo making hard hits. Its not Bo. It's Cosgrove. Cos has no idea what a LBer is supposed to do. Cos thinks a defensive player should stand back on his heels, read and react.

All the Blackshirts look more like dance partners than football players this season. Not just Bo.

check the film - not a decent hit in many games. I was at the Ball State and Iowa State games and pleaded from the stands for someone - anyone to hit an opponent.

so Fearless
I havent had time to read back to all your posts
but who would you like to see replace the coach?
All my NE inlaws want Turner Gill. I assume he is there for the taking.
Grobe has to be fairly decent. He has not had anywhere near the talent recruited like the huskers. Now that Carr and Callihan (?) are gone that leaves Brown as the king of talent wasters.

Posted by Fearless on November 21, 2007 at 3:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Turner Gill is a great guy with all the Nebraska values that Osborne wants. Just inexperienced. Yes, he would accept.

Tuberville has experience. His D-Coordinator Muschamp would be fiery.

Pelini might be a good fit. Don't think he has the personality that Osborne would prefer.

Paul Johnson at Navy would be a good fit.

I would really like Rich Rodriguez. Love his offense. But, he won't come to Lincoln.

I also doubt Osborne will pay big dollars to a coach.

NU and CU are 2 prograns going in different directions. Before the season started, CU's goals were to win some games, get to a bowl. And that's going to happen. NU was expected to contend with MU for the Big 12 championship with the south. So look where they are at. Hawkins has landed 2 realy great recruits and has proven he can win with what he has. NU is,, well,, speaks for itself. But the BIG difference is that NU has panicked. So many fans didn't like Callahan to begin with. And were waiting to take the fire to him. Now that they have and excuse, not even looking at what Callahan was bringing in as far as talent. They will go back to the beginning with new coaches. They have become like to many other failiures. Miami, ND, etc.. revoling door for coaches and program.
Well NU fans (so to speak).. I guess you don't all stick together in all kinds of weather do ya?

going in different directions is correct.

Coach Hawkins vows to forfeit if fans act up

By Vanessa Miller
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

The University of Colorado Buffaloes have been squaring off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers after Thanksgiving for years, but a new set of circumstances this season has CU officials and police wondering what they'll see in the stands for the rivalry game Friday.

This is the first time since CU started giving students the whole Thanksgiving week off that the game will be in Boulder. The 10 a.m. start time also is earlier than normal. And then there's the cold weather forecasters are predicting

"This will have a new dynamic for us," said CU police Cmdr. Tim McGraw. "This set of factors has never presented itself to us before."

Typically, when the University of Nebraska brings its footballers to town, the stands are packed, and it's "one of the busier games," McGraw said. During some of the more heated contests in both Boulder and Lincoln, fan angst has led onlookers to spit on players, toss projectiles and spar with each other.

But CU officials said they aren't even sure how many people will show up to this week's game, which is one of the biggest rivalries of the season.

"We'll have to wait and see what the impact is," McGraw said.

Two years ago, at the teams' last meeting in Boulder, authorities cleared two student sections for the first time in Folsom Field history after frustrated fans started pitching items onto the field. Nebraska pounded CU 30-3 in that game.

This year's match-up promises more-competitive play and brings bowl-game consequences, with each team sitting on a 5-6 record. But McGraw said he doesn't expect a repeat of the 2005 fan behavior — if, for no other reason, because the weather is expected to be freezing.

"We ordered 20-degree temperatures at kick-off, and 38 for a high," McGraw said. "That will keep people bundled up, with their hands in their pockets."

Added police and security officers have patrolled past Nebraska games at Folsom Field, but McGraw said this week's game will be staffed like any other this season. About 70 officers will be working the event, not including ushers.

"Having the 10 a.m. kick-off will make things easier on us," he said. "So many of our issues are alcohol-related, and they'll have less time to tailgate."

CU sports information director Dave Plati said he thinks the early start time could have more of an effect on crowd turnout than fan behavior. Because many students went home for the week, coming back the morning after Thanksgiving — "with all that turkey in their system" — might be tough, Plati said.

Plati said if fans do act out, head coach Dan Hawkins has vowed to pull his team off the field.

"He'll forfeit the game," Plati said. "He won't stand for that behavior."

Fearless. It all depends on who is the next coach at NU. The 70 you put on K-state was just after the 70 you gave up to KU.
Yes the Buffs have beat themselves but lack depth, 1-2 more years then we can say for sure on which team is headed in which direction. Hopefuly both up so the CU vs NU game will be like the '89 and '90 games.

87-96 both teams were ranked and most time highly ranked

outstanding college football on both sides of the field

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shawn Watson become head coach in Lincoln

Happy Thanksgiving!

Shawn Watson?
You sure know how to start a conversation.
No surprise at CU that Watson came together with Callihan. No doubt they will be leaving together as well.
What if he didnt? He would probably invite Barnett in as an assistant. Chew on that for a while.

Posted by Fearless on November 22, 2007 at 7:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

After Osborne got involved Shawn Watson was reassigned to the sideline from the press box.

I am guessing Watson took over the offense from Callahan. Not surprisingly the offense woke up and began to perform.

I think Watson had a more positive afeect on the offense than Joe Ganz after the injury to Keller.

After Watson's offense rips the Buff defense for a win tomorrow I think Shawn will be named interim head coach for the bowl game

and possibly permanent head coach after the bowl

no way in a field full of corn will Osborne hire a guy with CO connections. Before Pellini? Before Gill? Osborne has to hit a home run. His first selection at a successor wasnt all that bad of a coach....something those spoiled fans in NE are now beginning to realize

Posted by Fearless on November 23, 2007 at 7:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Pelini has little in the way of Nebraska connections

Bob Devaney did not have Nebraska connections

Tom knows he needs to hit a home run. He will not limit his selection to a Nebraska guy.

I just now saw 727's reply from the 21st - seriously, they way you guys have been consistently shelled, and the program in such dissary, I can see faithful NE fans keying just that phrase on your car.

NU fans only care about winning and living in the past - outside of that they are completly insufferable the rest of the year.

For the last time, just because you play each other every year, DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A RIVALRY!
46-17-2 is not a rivalry.

I hope both teams come back to dominance and make this game special like it was in the late 80's/early 90's. But looking at how it's been the last few years; and how bad the CU offense and NU defense look so far today...it may take a while.

Good Luck CU
