DU cruises to win over Wyoming
DENVER — Denver's offense didn't resemble the one Joe Scott ran for three years at Princeton. Instead of using the full shot clock and running the famed Princeton weave, Denver ran the ball often and took 3-point shots early in its possessions.
"It was five guys playing together, playing terrific defense was terrific, moving the ball around to get layups and open shots off cuts," Denver coach Scott said. "If somebody wants to call it the Princeton offense, it is what it is."
Adam Tanner had 21 points and five rebounds to lead quick-moving Denver to a 76-65 victory over Wyoming Tuesday night.
"Everything I did came from within our offense," Tanner said. "If I was open, I took the shot."
Tanner was 4-for-5 on 3-pointers for Denver (2-1), which was 12-of-21 from beyond the arc. Kyle Lewis added 16 points on 8-for-8 free throw shooting for the Pioneers.
In other games
WASHINGTON ST. 86, BOISE ST. 74 — At Boise, Idaho, Derrick Low scored 26 points and Kyle Weaver had 19 to lead No. 9 Washington State. The Cougar tandem combined to shoot 10-of-12 in the first 8½ minutes of the second half, when Washington State (2-0) quickly erased a six-point halftime deficit. The Cougars outscored the Broncos 33-10 during that stretch and coasted the rest of the way.
MICHIGAN STATE 86, CHICAGO STATE 53 — At East Lansing, Mich., Raymar Morgan had a career-high 25 points and 15 rebounds in a first-round game of the CBE Classic. All-American Drew Neitzel added 12 points for No. 12 Michigan State. David Holston scored 18 points and had four 3-pointers for Chicago State, which led 18-17 before the Spartans took control with a 28-8 surge to finish the half.
GONZAGA 80, IDAHO 43 — At Spokane, Wash., freshman Austin Daye scored 18 points, Jeremy Pargo added 14 points and Matt Bouldin 12 to help No. 14 Gonzaga (2-0) overcome 18 turnovers in a sloppy game. Idaho (1-1) used defensive pressure to stay close in the first half, but the Vandals shot just 30 percent and had 10 shots blocked. They also committed 29 fouls, and the score would have been worse if Gonzaga had not made just 22 of 36 free throws.
TEXAS A&M 67, ORAL ROBERTS 53 — At College Station, Texas, Josh Carter scored 15 points and Chinemelu Elonu keyed a second-half spurt in a preseason NIT game. Oral Roberts was led by Adam Liberty with 13 points. Robert Jarvis had 12.
ARIZONA 76, NORTHERN ARIZONA 69 — At Tucson, Ariz., Chase Budinger scored 25 points to help No. 17 Arizona open the season without Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson on the bench. Olson, who has been on a personal leave of absence since Nov. 4, was replaced by assistant Kevin O'Neill. Olson had missed only seven previous games during his 25-years as Wildcats coach.
The Wildcats (1-0) got 18 points from freshman guard Jerryd Bayless and 15 from Jawann McClellan.
MISSOURI 79, FORDHAM 55 — At Columbia, Mo., DeMarre Carroll had 16 points and Missouri overcame a sluggish second half in the final of the CBE Classic's Columbia Regional. J.T. Tiller came off the bench to score 13 points for Missouri, and Stefhon Hannah added 12.
