Texas tops Buffs on penalty kicks

CU ousted in Big 12 tourney quarterfinals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Colorado women's soccer team forced second-seeded Texas to overtime in the first round of the Big 12 tournament, but lost on penalty kicks Wednesday.

CU and Texas finished regulation and overtime in a 0-0 tie. The Longhorns then coverted four penalty kicks, compared to two for the Buffs.

"It was disappointing," CU coach Bill Hempen said. "I felt like we played very well. We certainly had our chances and they had their chances and you have to keep it in your mind that we technically didn't lose the game."

The game may have ended the Buffs' season, but Hempen isn't giving up hope for an NCAA tournament berth for the sixth straight season.

"We're going to proceed," he said. "We're not going to shut down yet and we're going to hope for the best. If the committee was here watching tonight's game they would certainly know that we're a quality team, so we'll just have to see what happens."

The Buffs (9-7-4) fell at the hands of the Longhorns (13-3-4) in each of their last two games.

CU nearly got on the board 30 minutes into the match when junior midfielder Alex Cousins sent a through ball on to freshman Michaela DeJesus, who shot the ball into a sliding Texas goalkeeper, Dianna Pfenniger, who managed to clear the ball wide.

Cousins also came close in the second half, hitting the crossbar. Junior Amber Bettenhausen also had a good opportunity in the second half, but Pfenniger made the save.

CU freshman Mel Hicks came close in overtime, but Pfenniger deflected away Hicks' shot with her body.

CU goalkeeper Kara Linder rejected Texas' first shot in the penalty-kicks phase, but the Longhorns connected on the four other opportunities.

In other Big 12 tournament action, Texas A&M tied Iowa State 1-1, with the Aggies advancing on penalty kicks; Missouri defeated Texas Tech 4-3 in two overtimes; and Oklahoma State defeated Kansas 3-0
