Hazen puts hammer down at Potts Invite
Senior closing in on CU record in hammer throw

2007 CU Potts Invitational Track & Field meet
Renee Bailie, a former Colorado runner now running for Nike, wins the 3000 meters at the Potts Invitational on Saturday.
Zach Hazen has a fondness for making things fly.
Right now he's concentrating on throwing heavy metal objects through the air. In the future he wants to propel heavier metal objects through space.
The Colorado senior is scheduled to get his aerospace degree in May, and Saturday he was winning the hammer throw at the Potts Invitational. Hazen threw 192 feet, 3 inches (58.6 meters) at Potts Field and was only 4 feet, 6 inches from tying the school record. He went past that record mark in practice earlier this week, so it's likely only a matter of time before Hazen owns the record.
"In fact, my last practice throw today was beyond 60 meters, but it was out of bounds," Hazen said. "I'm expecting to get it this season."
Hazen's mark was good enough to qualify him for the NCAA regional meet. Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto also had a regional qualifying mark in the javelin. The CU senior recorded a mark of 161-5 and finished second. She was the top collegiate finisher.
No Buffalo won two events at CU's own meet, although a former Buff did. Renee Baillie, formerly Metivier, was a national champion at CU and finished her career in 2005. She is now running for Nike and assists in coaching the Buffs. She won the 1,500 in 4:34.19 and the 3K in 9:57.67.

She wasn't running the 1,500 specifically to win. She was pacing current Buff Liza Pasciuto. Before Saturday, Pasciuto had not raced since the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where she finished 16th in November. The All-American ran with Baillie in
the 1,500 Saturday and finished second in 4:35.62.
"I certainly got the rest out, so that felt good," Pasciuto said. "I didn't do as well as I wanted to. I just fell back a little bit on the last lap."
One of the Buffs' other top distance runners, Payton Batliner, won the 3K on the men's side. Batliner was timed in 8:37.99, well ahead of teammate Billy Nelson, who was third in 8:54.27. Neither were entirely concerned with winning. They were using the race as a training tool for the Stanford Invite in two weeks.
Batliner is going to run the 10K there and didn't get everything he wanted out of Saturday's race. A stiff wind came across Potts Field in last few hours of the day and made running tough.
The Buffs also won both the men's and women's 1,600 relays. Nate Terry, George Pincock, Abe Friesen and Chris Abuan won the men's race. Sara Price, Haverty, Troi Smith and Veronica Maul won the women's race.
Chelsea Haverty also won on the women's side, with a jump of 18-1 in the long jump. Cortney Hutmacher won the hammer with a throw of 177-02, but she was not technically competing for CU because she is redshirting this outdoor season.
In addition to Hazen and Hutmacher's wins in the hammer, the Buff throwers also picked up a win in the men's shot. Ryan Willis won that event with a throw of 54-33/4.
Hazen only competed in the hammer and the discus. The hammer is his athletic specialty, and he already has the school record for the weight throw, which is the indoor equivalent of the hammer.
His academic specialty is the not-so-easy science of space. Hazen, who looks like he could easily get a job crushing boulders, has already had some job interviews in the aerospace field. He may also continue with school. He has a particular interest in unmanned space vehicles but isn't exactly sure what he wants to do in his long-term future.
He does know what he wants to do in his short-term future.
"I want to get to nationals, because I didn't accomplish that in the indoor season," he said.
