Culpepper, Kastor win cross titles
Former Buffs go 1-2-3-4 in men's race
Olympian Alan Culpepper won the U.S. cross country national title on Saturday at Flatirons Golf Course, edging fellow University of Colorado alums Adam Goucher and Dathan Ritzenhein.
Culpepper won the 12k race in 37 minutes, nine seconds. He was 26 seconds ahead of Goucher. "Ritz," who led for the first half of the race, finished in 37:47. Boulder's Jorge Torres finished the Buff quartet at the head of the race by finishing fourth in 38:07.
Former Bolder Boulder winner and Olympic medalist Deena Kastor dominated the women's 8k race. She held a large gap on the rest of the pack for the entire race and won in 26:47. Boulder native Shalane Flanagan finished second in 27:48 and former Buff Kara Goucher was third in 28:01.
Boulder's Patty Murray also won the women's master's in 29:54, winning by more than 30 seconds.
The race drew a large crowd that was four or five deep along the final straightaway for the men's race. The course became extremely muddy by the final race and some runners struggled to make it through the muck. But the response was positive from the athletes about having the race in Boulder.
