Miles, Rams fall at North Dakota St.

FARGO, N.D. — An afternoon of standing ovations began with former North Dakota State coach Tim Miles and ended with a Bison victory over Miles and the Colorado State Rams.

Juniors Brett Winkelman, Ben Woodside and Mike Nelson — the three prized recruits Miles brought to Fargo — scored all but 18 of NDSU's points Saturday in an 83-69 victory before 5,134 fans.

Miles, who left for Colorado State after six years with NDSU, received a warm reception when he took the floor and shook hands with a handful of students before tip-off.

"I almost started bawling at the beginning," Miles said. "The game couldn't start soon enough."

It began with a basket by Willis Gardner, giving the Rams their only lead of the game. The Bison, who led 42-30 at intermission, never let the visitors closer than five points in the second half.

Winkelman, a 6-foot-6 junior from Morris, Minn., scored 26 points and hauled down 11 rebounds for NDSU (6-5).

Stuart Creason, a 7-foot senior, led the Rams with 25 points. He missed only one of 10 field goal attempts and was perfect in seven free throw tries. Gardner added 15 points.
