All eyes will be on quarterbacks in spring finale

Buffs close drills today at Folsom

CU spring game

10 a.m. — CU vintage apparel and game-worn authentic gear goes on sale in Balch Fieldhouse.

10:30 a.m.-noon — Healthy Kids Day Skills & Fitness Stations on the Folsom Field surface.

11 a.m.-noon — Healthy Kids Day Autograph Session with CU players and other student-athletes.

1 p.m. — Spring game.

The fall is going to be huge.

Those were the words of Colorado quarterbacks coach Mark Helfrich after Thursday night's practice when asked about the competition at the position.

There is no chance that Dan Hawkins is going to name a starter after today's spring game at Folsom Field, set to start at 1 p.m. But his talented and confident son Cody is going to push junior college transfer Nick Nelson for the job after redshirting last season and watching helplessly as the Buffs offense struggled during a 2-10 season.

"It was definitely a learning experience for me. I grew a lot mentally, emotionally and physically as a person," Cody Hawkins said. "At the time you're kind of wondering about redshirting and what is this whole deal about. But especially now, I know that was the right decision for everybody."

James Cox opened the 2006 season under center before Bernard Jackson took the controls. The former is out of eligibility, and "B-Jax" is expected to be used in a "Slash" role made famous by Kordell Stewart in Pittsburgh.

Cody Hawkins and Nelson have pushed each other while developing a friendship during spring drills. All eyes will be on them when today's game begins at 1 p.m."I'm really glad I got the opportunity to learn behind Bernard Jackson and James Cox last season," Cody Hawkins said. "Now I'm just trying to work with coach Helfrich and Nick Nelson to be the best quarterback that I can be this spring. And hopefully it works out this fall."

Another player to keep an eye on today will be Kevin Eberhart. All he has to do next season is replace two-time All-American placekicker Mason Crosby, whose jersey will be honored permanently at Folsom Field after a special ceremony at halftime.

Unlike the Nebraska Spring Game where the 1st team plays the scout team and Callahan talks about how great they are only to score 6 points against Maine in your 1st game, CU played 1st against 1st and looked awesome on offense.

After watching today I think Hawkins looked significantly better than Nelson. The TE's look sharp and the WR's looked better too. No running game up the middle but good outside.

hi, beautiful day in boulder! cody hawkins was the whole show, intense, and on target. hugh charles had some flashes. liked the size on daniel dykes at safety. some of the players on the bench looked like little kids! lack of size on the east bench. give credit to the band for their hard work. cody is better looking than his father, but his father has better hair! hope dan gets better sun-glasses. he looks like a spy!.....stay happy.

How did that 7 on 7 scrimmage work out? Why didn't we have more players involved?

Covercorner, you posted on April 14, 2007 at 4:50 that Hawkins looked significantly better than Nelson. Looks can be deceiving, especially, when he's daddy's boy.
Nick Nelson was one of the best quarterbacks that ever played in Orange County. How can you say that Cody Hawkins is better than Nelson? First, Hawkins is two years younger and lacks the long-term experience that Nelson has, even if big daddy is his mentor and personal coach.
Now, with all said and done, put that in your pipe and smoke it. We will see in the fall, who looks significantly better.
