Five-goal second brings Rage to life
Broomfield team routs Eagles
BROOMFIELD — Opportunism was sorely lacking for the Rocky Mountain Rage as of late. But hungry play came back in style for the team Saturday night in the Broomfield Event Center.
The Rage downed rival Colorado Eagles 7-2 in the second of a two-game series, with a monstrous five-goal second period.
The Rage didn't let a major Eagle penalty slip past, scoring its first three goals in a 1-minute, 41-second span of the 4-minute foul. And then wing Dorian Anneck put the finishing touches on the period, netting back-to-back goals.
"It was just taking care of the little things tonight," Anneck said. "Getting pucks on net, battling for loose pucks and they just found their way into the back of the net."
Doling the Eagles (11-3) only their third franchise loss by seven points or more comes none too soon. Every time the Rage (4-8-2) has taken the ice recently it's been an uphill battle.
The team dropped its past four games, been shut out twice and fell to a 1-3 record against the Eagles. It's also struggled on a slew of power-play opportunities — when they mattered most.
The Rage having the advantage Saturday, however, was a dangerous thing.
First center Dominick Noel and wings Anders Strome and Matic Kralj unleashed the second period, power-play fury — between 5:32 and 7:13 — to equalize and go ahead. Then wings Nick Warriner and Mark Wires rounded out the special teams play, with a goal apiece in the third.
"So much for our struggling power play," Rage coach Tracy Egeland said. "We just started to put pucks on net, and they just started to go in."
There was also added benefit to the offensive onslaught; the Rage finally plucked the biggest thorn from its side — Marco Emond. The Eagles keeper has been stingy against the Rage, relinquishing only five goals in three meetings.
And after Emond notched nine wins on the year, the Rage get to boast ruining his perfect record in the net.
"You play a team 12 times in a year, you're going to build some animosity," Anneck said. "So, it's a little extra special."
The secret now for the Rage is keeping all facets of its game clicking for the rest of the season.
"There is no secret," Kralj said. "In our system its just about working hard to get the pucks deep, work their (defense) off and score goals."
