Victory at NU would ease pain

Buffs have labored through 2-9 season

None of them ever dreamed they would be talking about salvaging their season during Nebraska week.

The upperclassmen on the Colorado football team are a proud bunch who have seen more success than failure in their careers at CU. They are a rarity in the history of the Colorado program.

Many of them, including captains Brian Daniels, Mason Crosby and Thaddaeus Washington, don't know what it's like to travel to Lincoln, Neb., and leave as losers. Daniels and Washington have won the two games they have played in Memorial Stadium and Crosby won during his only visit in 2004.

So it was another sober moment in a surreal season Monday when they were asked at a midday press conference whether beating their arch rival could redeem them in a fall filled with hard lessons, two wins and nine losses.

"I don't know if it would salvage the season, but it would sure make me feel better to go out on top, and kind of wreck Nebraska's top-25 standing," Daniels said. "Getting a win there would go along way in alleviating some of the pains this year has had."

The road team has won the past four games in the series and the Buffs certainly remember the bitter taste of last season's disheartening 30-3 defeat against the Cornhuskers in Folsom Field. That game merely set the tone for a 70-3 loss to Texas in the Big 12 Conference championship game a week later.

The Buffs hope to return the favor against the No. 23 Cornhuskers this year and end a 13-game losing streak against ranked opponents in the process. CU is also looking for its first road win since Oct. 29 last season at Kansas State.

A win this week in what quarterback Bernard Jackson called "our bowl game" would end a lot of ugly streaks in a rotten season and provide a fresh start for next year's team.

"I think if we go out there and win this game we will look back and say 'All right we won against Nebraska our last year,'" Crosby said. "It's

our last game and our last opportunity to show what we have as seniors here at CU, and I think that's probably the most important thing."

They are used to phone calls and video messages in the Dal Ward Center during Thanksgiving week. And some of them will surely come again this year, though probably not at the rate of the recent past.

They come from former Buffs in the NFL and in private life — some of whom they know and some of whom are strangers — regaling them with tales from past encounters with the Cornhuskers and emphasizing the importance of beating Big Red.

Washington and Daniels both said CU beating Nebraska 62-36 in 2001 was the reason they chose to play their college ball in Boulder. Daniels watched the game from his couch and Washington watched it from the seats in Folsom Field on his recruiting trip.

"I saw the guys come out in all black and they made sure that they were going to come out and make a statement," Washington said. "They weren't just coming out to have fun, but to beat Nebraska. Just to see the fans' faces and see how the community reacts to this game — it's just a big game. They put it in a way that you have to win this game and if you don't then it's a big problem."

Coach Dan Hawkins is about to enter only his fourth season since 1994 without postseason practices of any kind. This year has been an adjustment for him, too. Though it is his first encounter with the Cornhuskers, he isn't lacking the fire required of a CU head coach to beat Nebraska.

Hawkins said winning the season finale also would provide a sense of accomplishment, which is always a boost into the offseason.

"I've had a few seasons where we lost the last game," he said. "That thing lingers. You cannot shake it until you get going again. But I think it can be a catalyst for your offseason program."

Notable

Defensive tackle Jason Brace (concussion) and linebacker Marcus Burton (fractured tibia) are doubtful. Defensive tackles Marcus Jones (concussion) and Taj Kaynor (stinger) are probable. ... CU has allowed just five plays from scrimmage of 40 yards or more, which stands to be the fewest since the 1987 season. ... Wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Eric Kiesau will celebrate his 34th birthday on game day.

At 0-100, the worst days as a Buff are better than the best days as a Husker. Without Husker football, what else is there for you?

A rivalry is in the eye of the beholder. For someone who opens this board up at 6am and spends 12 hours a day shooting their mouth off, I would say it is a rivalry.
....and even should Dr. Tom's 66-3 prediction ring true, Hawkins cheerleading would still be true.

my my Dr tom .....why all the bitterness? Did we touch a nerve? Is off season corn husking not enough?

For a little nothing of a game, sure to be a huge blowout, you Nebraska fans sure spend a lot of time talking smack. Of course Nebraska players take such comments as disrespect, duh, you dullards, it is disrespect. Hmm, maybe it hits a little too close to home. Maybe the insults sting that much more because deep down you NU fans realize there is some truth to what is said about your school and your state. I've never visited another team's message board. What is the point? I don't care what your fans think. I don't care about your school, your program, or your state. I don't care about your history, your recruiting, your school colors, your lame mascot, your faculty, your students, your town, or your coaches. The best part of a Nebraska game isn't those rare occasions when we've won, it is when your cheap, gaudy, sweat shirt clad, obese, balding men and overweight, tack women with bouffant hairstyles either leave Boulder or are safely in our rear view mirrors. Anything less than an absolute blowout will be a failure by Nebraska. Nebraska is a ranked team and we haven't done well against them lately. Nebraska has won the North, has a big lead in the series, has former CU coaches on staff, has an established coach who has recruited his own players, and is playing at home. We are 2-9, have no depth at key positions, and find new ways to lose every week. How can you not beat us this year, you band of imbecilic losers?

Ahh, yet again, let the truth ring out from ATLBuff! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Dr. Doolittle. Thanks for beating a dead horse with the microbrew and coke talk. Maybe stick to sensible thoughts on the game, rather than on your rediculous predictions of 66-3. And so what if it happens. If you are so great, you ought to be able to score 70 points on us without even breaking a sweat. We have been to the lows in this program. It will be sweet to look back on this time a few years from now, when THE HAWK has the BUFFS mowing you down like the CORN you live in! BETTER DEAD THAN RED!!! GO BUFFS!!!

So when was the last time you won, Doc? On the comment board? Puhleeze! The real Doctor had a shred of class and acted like he had been there before.

Wow, if you just "do it" then maybe you should tone down the trash talking and take your own advice. I suspect Nebraska should win this game by 100 points or, at a minimum, beat us as bad as Texas did last year when we went to the Big XII championship and you guys stayed home. What, isn't mighty NU as good as Texas was last year? Colorado certainly is worse than they were last year. Maybe you should increase your prediction. Yeah, we haven't been a great team in some time, in my opinion, but CU is more than just a football factory. Nebraska, on the other hand, is not. I guess it must have hurt that much more to see mediocre CU teams go to the Big XII championship year after year, while mighty Big Red sat at home. So sad. Tom, I'd hug you if I could.

SCOREBOARD - when all the trash is done, it's all that counts. How many have you won cu? You are already making excuses for the pounding you are about to recieve from the GREAT BIG RED. I'll check in on Sat. and see what you have to say then.

Yeah Daddy has beamer. He doesn't top off the tank and squeegee the windows.

Wow, another recruit at Nebraska. Who cares? I never knew so many kids did poorly in school and had low SAT scores. Well, if football doesn't work out, they can always fall back on their degree. Ha, ha, ha, ha! Really LOL.

You guys are ecstatic about the possibility of beating a 2-9 team with no real QB and no backup QBs. Wow. Winners!

Posted by RedRover on November 21, 2006 at 10:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

All of these posts are a classic cases of homerism. As a Husker Fan I know better than to think the Buffs are 2-9 BAD. They're not! We WILL probably win this game and probably by 3 or more touchdowns. Our FOCUS as Huskers fans should not be on what happens on the field, but what happens in the stands. Buff fan, that is what we have a problem with. For those of us that witnessed it on TV last year, you know what we a talking about. The famous Boulder yellow coats excorting an entire section of fans, er, students from the building. To answer DallasBuff regarding what else there is in Nebraska, well, what else is there? We all know the answer to that, but what we can't figure out is why there are always a few extra things for sale inside Folsom State Pen, other than a program. If the yellow coats could figure out a way to keep the scrubery out of the building, we wouldn't have all the problems.

Posted by ATLBuff on November 21, 2006 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

True, Buffet attended Nebraska and, amazingly, he managed to overcome that scarlet letter. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he attended Nebraska after soaking up some real education at The University of Pennsylvania. Or that he went on to earn an MBA at Columbia University. I'm guessing he learned more in a week at those two ivy league schools than he did in his two years at "Big Wed" (pronounced with a pathetic sounding lisp and all of the pathetic faux macho bravado you Huckster fans can muster. News flash, you're supposed to beat us and beat us bad. The line on the game should be at least 18 points. Anybody know a spread?

As for the student section last year, no arguments from my end. It was shameful and I won't make excuses. I don't think Nebraska fans are saints, but that doesn't excuse that behavior last season. I thought at the time, and still think, that they should ban those fans caught doing stupid things like that from attending games for at least a year or two. Hawkins has said he'd consider pulling the team off the field and forfeiting the game should something like that occur in the future. I hope he sticks to that position.

Since when is Nebraska a "Championship" team. Come on. I hardly think that being ranked on the low end of the top 25 qualifies you as a championship team. You people talk like Nebraska is freaking USC or Ohio State. I'm glad that Hawkins said his husker comment. It was the gospel according to Hawk that day and he preached truth. Enjoy your opportunites to beat CU while recover from a fresh firing, it will not continue. Make you comments about our fans.... blah blah blah. I haven't once gone on a nebraska foosball site and talked smack. If this game is not a rivalry then why are you here, shouldn't you be out plowing the fields or something. Because honestly who would want to live or even go to school in Nebraska. That's like living in Kansas except Kansas fans have better things to do than talk smack to the greatest college in the best state.

Don't hate us just because we are Nebraska, & your not. That is just a fact of life you are all going to have to learn to overcome. Sad part is you never will. Nebraska football has more class in the players jocks than the buffs have in their entire university.
GBR!!!

Um, I think you meant "you're" and not "your." But, alas, you're right, we're not Nebraska. Overcome huh? "Ding," done.

What better way to tell the world how classy you are than this sentence: "Nebraska football has more class in the players jocks than the buffs have in their entire university." Oh and "players" should read "players'" and "Buffs" should be capitalized.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO TALK OTHER THAN JUNK. The game isn't anything to talk about. Hawkins has given our guys enough reasons to crank you guys. If he had shown some respect, then maybe it might have been a game, but now......... Disrespect shouldn't happen on the college level BETWEEN college coaches. That was stupidity! I understand why DrTom is so pissed. I'm not pissed, I'm happy! I'm happy right up until I read some of these responses. Come on Green Grazers, you can do much better than this. Lay down the pipe's for a minute and lay something good on me......... PLEASE give me something to work with. I'm dying on this board today.

I am done with the put downs, lets talk football.

Your prediction of 66-3 is a little far fetched. I think that it will be a close game, but I do give the edge to the huskers because of the crowd. Bernard Jackson can not throw for his life and that makes CU one dimensional. NU should be able to control the clock. The only way CU can win is if NU turns the ball over. I am a ardent CU fan but my prediction is 24-14 NU. I good game would be nice to see.

Come on Dr. Tom, stay on track...

CU has about the 1/10 of the resources that NU has and they have managed to stay competitive. Recently, CU has beaten NU 2 of the last 4 meetings. CU will be far improved next year and will actually have a QB who can throw a little bit. That has been CU's problem all year is that teams can just gear up and blitz on every play. Next year the buffs will have a balanced attack and more experience in Hawks system. I see Hawk as a mold of Urban Meyer; a great coach who needed his shot at a BCS school.

The Nebraska representatives here, Dr. Tom et al. really do a disservice to the legacy of their program by talking so belligerently about their team. This 8-3 team is a far cry from any of their Tommy Frazier teams and not even up to the Eric Crouch era. As I recall, your transition under Coach Callahan has not showed any resemblence to say, the transition Ohio State made with Jim Tressel. So get off your high horse....

As a football fan, I think it's shameful when the discussion takes on this kind of tone. Nasty put-downs, sick jokes, etc. What about the football game? And, why does the rivalry mean there has to be hatred between the teams and fans? There is such a thing as a "cleanly played" and "respectful" rivalry. I'm a Husker fan, but I don't feel that makes it mandatory to demean and slander everything about Colorado. Now, on to football. Trying to stay objective about everything leads me to the following conclusions:
1. There is NOT alot of difference between the Buffs and NU as far as talent. CU has been competitive in almost all their games, and NU was hammered by OSU in Stillwater. The Huskers weakness is inconsistency and it seems to be CU's problem also.
2. To say CU has not accomplished anything the last several years is wrong. They won quite a few North division crowns, and that is exactly what our goals are too.
3. Blowouts are rare in this game. Even when there is great disparity in win/loss records, it is usually close. The road teams do not seem to be at a big disadvantage. When was the last time NU blew out CU at home?!
4. I dont have a problem with what Hagan said about "punching the Huskers in the mouth". That just tells me he wants his team to get after us, as he should. I do, however, think that Hawkins is trying to create unnecessary hostility by saying "the worst day as a Buff is better than the best day as a Husker". Why does that have to have a place in the game? It seems to me that the CU administration wants to make it's distaste for Nebraska VERY evident, and I think it sets a bad tone for the fans and players.
5. Bill Callahan and his staff are not saints either. They bristle when their game plans and failures are challenged and occasionally break out with a "@#$$ing hillbillies! comment or throw out a throat slash. Neither group is perfect, so let's just play the game and treat each other like normal human beings. I'll be at the game and I'm sure not gonna try to be rude to every CU fan I see.
HERE'S TO GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP!!!

I don't have time to read all the posts. Did any of them mention how CU's student section discraced itself on national television last year. A ref got smoked right in the dome by a full bottled water. Aquafina as a matter of fact. You would never see Nebraska students/fans desecrate Tom Osborne field, or Memorial stadium. Before the BCS we used to throw Oranges on the field and not at people. "What do we have in the off season?" you ask... Character

You know what else is amazing, RED fans usually don't participate in such high quality discussions on other BIG XII boards, because they respect us. That is all we want is respect from a historically inferior opponent. The numbers don't lie, boys and girls, they are just facts! We want you to admonish yourselves and lift us up and praise us for being the 5-time National Champion. And, yes, there is no resemblence TO THE PAST YET! But time will tell. Callahan's first 3 year win totals, 5,8,and 9 after Friday. I might be wrong, but that seems like progress.

rickwilen,

I wish the CU adminstration was making it's distaste for NU VERY evident because that would mean that they actually care about the program. Instead, they focus almost completely on academics. While their attitude has resulted in CU being top tier university, the football program has been left in the dust. We've accomplished quite a bit with scarce resources - just wait until Hawk gets it rollin'.

By the way, when you guys almost beat Texas, I was rooting for NU and the Big XII North - but I definitely give no respect to the majority of NU fans wasting my time on this webpage.

First of all let me agree with your statement that NU will win this match up at home.

Second let me say 1992 Oct NU 52 CU 7 45 point spread

2005 NU 30 cu 3 27 point spread

2001 CU 62 NU 34 26 point spread.

CU wins 1/2 national championship won on 5 downs at Missouri. Mythicle

WOW you want to hang a hat on one win, well this year you will have to hang your hat on 2 wins and 10 loss's.
I live in Colorado and you CU fans are the worst fans in the nation bar none.
Going to my first game at CU last year Vs the Huskers, I watched as fans threw water bottles onto the field and had the pleasure of watching the representitives of the worst fans in the world's student body be escorted from the stadium at the end of the 3rd and 4th quarter.
Then I watched as the stadium cleared in the middle of the third quarter.
You CU fans spout off red is dead and utter crap that fills your heads but at the end of the day if 8-3 and a big 12 North title is dead then 2 - 9 must be 6 feet under.

When CU wins all the fans wear their CU garb, but lately I have not seen to many CU logo's. because that is the kind of fans you are, fair weather only. that is the reason you cannot sell out your stadium seats, that is the reason you will always remain losers. even when you win. It is not just the loud mouth fans that lose, its the program that loses, and the fans who want to be decent but stand by while their idiot fellow fans destroy the integrity of why the game is played.

The only reason this game means more than the other 11 is to shut up your worthless fans for another year. other wise every game is important as this one. One game at a time that is how championships are built, not on hate, certainly not on poor sportsmanship.

INTEGRITY, is something you poor CU fans need, CREDIBILITY is the other, rivals I think not.

OU is Nebraska's rival not only because of the history but the respect OU and NU fans have for each other.

So hang your hat on a win in 2001 and I'll hang my hat on this one and the other previous 45 wins.

Might look something like this - "Hey Montana State, I'm reasonably sure we might play you close this year," and "Hey Baylor I bet you'll need three overtimes to beat us at home. But wait till next year when we paint our field blue." cu "fans?" the only bowl in your future is the one Hawkins puts over his head when he cuts his own hair (seriously somebody get that guy a gift certificate to supercuts please). And you might tell Hawkins his "fans?" are already acting poorly. He might be smart to just forfeit right now. And DrTom, NU will not score 66. He'll pull the team manager and waterboys after we get to 60 and put in the chearleaders. They will only manage a field goal and a safety - Me thinks that's only 65. - GO BIG RED

Ok, last year I predicted 33-7 NU win. I was generous and leaned on the side of caution. The good news, oh CU cows, no such need this year. Let the humiliation begin (oh wait, that began in September with Montana State) NU 49 CU 6.

Have a wonderful off season.

where is CaliBuff these days? Seems like he had criticized some guy's prediction of only 3 wins for the Buffs this year, and said if that were the case he would get naked, paint himself red, and do a happy dance to the husker fight song. We're cranking up the music, where is CaliBuff?

Regardless about our strong feelings about our teams, it is still just a game. I can't imagine insulting a visting fan just because they like the their team. I think the animosity in this "rivalry" is disappointing. I don't have a problem admitting when another team outplays us and deserves to win. CU has had a couple of stretches where they were very successful, and the Huskers success of the 90's will be hard to ever duplicate again. But, that is ALL IN THE PAST! Let's just act like decent human beings and enjoy the game. By the way, ATLBuff, I thought the line about "Look outside they are towing your house" is absolutely hilarious!!!
I do have a question, though. Why is it that the CU coaches can't give their coaches multiyear contracts? I never did understand what the deal is there. That puts CU at a bit of a disadvantage when trying to add high quality coaches on staff. That's something that should be changed. I hope the game is a well fought, clean game (with a Husker win of course) I plan on driving my John Deere tractor to the stadium......

hey caliBuff - when are you gonna make good on your promise, paint yourself red and do a happy dance to the husker fight song?

rickwilen, CU can't offer many of their coaches multi-year contracts because of some silly state law. I think CU is limited to something like 5 multi-year contracts. I know men's bb and men's fb coaches have multi-year deals. I think women's bb does too. Other than that, I think the AD and the President of the University take up the remaining multi-year contracts. I'm not entirely sure about that, but I think I'm right. I know we can't do multi-year contracts with our assistant coaches and I think that hurts us at times. I'd love to see CU offer our Cross Country, Skiing, and Women's Soccer coaches multi-year deals. Buffs fans living in CO should contact their local state rep to voice support for such changes.

Hey FOOTBALL ROCKS... Yeah I know that guy, he grew up in Aspen, and to think he wasted beer! To be honest with you, I would like like Colorado to step up in the North and turn this thing into a legitimate rivalry. I just wish they could clean up the program. Every program has their knuckleheads, but the CU violations continue to pile up and get national attention and even sanctions. Is it just me or are volleyball players (except for the ones with Marfan Syndrome) really hot?
