Buffs' Drescher keeping a low profile
Solid play means anonymity for long snapper
The physics of footballs were pushed to the limits this spring at the Colorado practice fields.
The Buffs' longtime long snapper, Greg Pace, completed his eligibility after last season. CU had a long snapper coming in as a freshman for this season, but they were between snappers during spring ball. They tried the best they could, and it wasn't going well. The stand-in snappers the Buffs' used were sending balls over the kickers' heads, in front of punters' feet and one ball even defied the laws of gravity.
While holder Nick Holz and kicker Mason Crosby waited for an attempt in practice, the snap hit in front of them, knuckled up in the air and quickly shot five yards to the left like a UFO hovering above the ground.

"Did you see that?" Crosby asked.
"Did you see that?" Holz replied.
If the incoming freshman wasn't as good as CU coaches hoped, the best kicker in the country may not have even had the chance to attempt a kick. Either that or someone on the team was going to have to work very hard — and make a miraculous change — to become a reliable snapper.
There haven't been any crazy snaps this season. The incoming freshman has been as good as CU coaches hoped. Justin Drescher hasn't had a bad snap and hasn't been noticed this season, which isn't always a bad thing.
"There were a few here and there that I'd like to have placed better, but I've been happy with my performance," Drescher said. "And when you're a long snapper it's good that no one has noticed."
The coaching staff at CU didn't start recruiting Drescher until January because they didn't get to Boulder much be
fore that. They saw Drescher at a camp for snappers and started convincing him to come to Colorado.
They didn't know they had an advantage over other schools. His father Jay played at CU in the early 1980s before injuries stopped his career. Drescher's family is from Holyoke so he grew up as a CU fan. When the Buffs offered a scholarship, Drescher accepted and kept up the Holyoke-to-Boulder recruiting pipeline started by Dusty Sprague.
Except that pipeline veered off to Dallas. Drescher's family moved there before high school and Drescher attended Southlake Carroll High. The school ended the last two seasons of Drescher's career as the No. 1 team in the nation. Pressure like that helped when he had to trot out to snap in front of more than 40,000 people every week in the Big 12.
"He has done a very good job, and I think that's partially because of the program he came from," special teams coach Kent Riddle said. "It's a very detailed program and I think that has helped him."
Long snappers are only in for a few plays a game and it may look like all they have to do is snap the ball. But it isn't as easy as it looks. If the snap is a little off it can turn into a missed field goal. And a snap over the punter's head can turn into a touchdown for the other team.
Pace was equally reliable in not making those mistakes for the Buffs. Now he's coaching the snappers and has continued to affect the Buffs' special teams. But as good as he was, his pupil may end up being better.
"He has been amazing," Holz said. "He hasn't had a bad snap all season. He has kept up the high level of play there that Greg had, if not better."

Great job Drescher. You had big shoes to fill when Pace left, way to step up. Go buffs!

I remember the spring game and watching the snaps being off every time. I'm really glad Drescher has not made any mistakes. Guys like Crosby are not replaceable but who steps in for him next year?

Nurse Tom,
Again with the Ethanol Fumes, dude your High. And we know about bein High in Boulder.
My suggestion: Have some Wheat Grass Lemonade to cleanse your Red Toxins from that not-impressive body u own & accept that CU will keep it close, and will win in the end on a Bomb from Mason Crosby.
Order Restored, give me a break. I say u lose to CU and get rump smacked in the Big 12 Title Game.

You're right we can't replace Crosby. It looks like we won't have a kicker or punter in this class. That means DiLalo will continue to handle punting. Hopefully he'll get better. As for extra points and field goals, I guess the job will be wide open. Playing behind Crosby means you get no attention so I have no idea if the guys on our roster will be any good. I suspect the best hs kickers have avoided committing to CU so long as they knew they'd have to serve as a back up to Crosby. We have two PKs, Isaac Garden and Kevin Eberhart, on the team. Both are juniors. Eberhart did ok his first year (2003), but has battled injuries since. He redshirted last year. Garden, second on the depth charts, was a walk on and he hasn't seen any playing time since joining the team. At punter, besides DiLalo, we have a sophomore named Tom Suazo. I don't know anything about him.
The Nebraska game is worrying because our defense hasn't been playing as well lately. We dominated the ISU game, but lets be honest, ISU wasn't a good team and we still gave up 16 points. We need Nebraska to play poorly and we need to play well if we're to win that game. We've played better teams than Nebraska all year long and our worst loss was by 21 or 22 points (at least 7 of which shouldn't have occurred). I'd be very surprised to see anything like the 66-3 tommy boy keeps predicting. Hopefully Robinson won't be fielding kick returns and Jackson can keep his head straight. I expect this game to be won or lost on how well our OL plays. If they can find a way to create lanes for Charles & co. and to give Jackson time to make smart decisions, we'll win. Also, Wright, Dizon and Washington will need to be in top form and our secondary needs to have tight coverage and a pick or two. Go Buffs!

It's been interesting reviewing some of the previous comments on this and other buffzone articles. I've been a longtime Colorado Husker (grew up in Fort Morgan, CO with many Nebraska relatives / I'm a Neb alum now living in WA state). I've also been a lukewarm Buffs fan since my first game at Folsom Field during the early 80's when CU wore royal blue and gold. In 1986(?) I watched from the stands (& in horror) as O.C. Oliver and company took the first of several W's during the 80's and 90's as the rivalry began under coach Mac. Rivalry ? Yes. It's a classic border war. Nebraska has lost it's yearly rival game with Oklahoma and the CU vs NU game is now what it is. (1971 final rankings NU 1, OU 2, CU 3 ... sweet sugar / 1994 NU 1, CU 3 enjoyable as well) At any rate... the CU vs NU rivalry over the past 2 decades has usually included close games and the games always have huge implications. My 2 favorite games (not close) are from 1992 and 2005. 1992 was both Tommie Frazier's and my freshman year in Lincoln. CU was considered among the nation's elite and Nebraska was ready to breakout and enter into the role of annual national championship contender. It was a rainy and chilly Halloween night at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska won the game 52-7 and I stormed the field with my friends and a few thousand other students. I hovered around the south endzone goal post and watched it come down. Some dude pulled out a hacksaw... sure sign of planning ahead... although I think the post just came down with brute force.
2005 was another favorite and for different reasons. That 30-3 win in hostile territory was a statement game at the very least. Nebraska is progressing. They're recruiting great talent and the offensive schemes (when executed properly) are very difficult to cover. It's a new brand of excitement. Speaking of excitement... Buff fans take notice of Bobby Purify's uncle. The 6'4" WR is sure to make some noise next Friday. Go Big XII & Go Big Red!

Atl Buff: what is your prediction?
Good comments and analysis, but again this is Rivalry game and I believe somehow/someway CU keeps it close w/ a chance to win; just like alot games we had this year (georgia, baylor).
Red Man: we had fun all year, agree that smackin
is all power of the pen. But still good time for most ppl.
I miss the smack from Soulja, he was a pro.

I think 2001 was my favorite game. I decided to stay in Boulder for Thanksgiving with my fraternity brothers instead of flying home to Memphis. I sprained both my ankles from jumping up and down in the stands so much.

OK, after looking at Nebraska's record I'm less worried and more confident in our guys. Also, the idea that Nebraska has returned to the dominant national power it once was seems laughable. Our team may not be good, but Nebraska's looks down right mediocre.
NU this year:
La Tech (W 49-10)
Nicholls St. (W 56-7)
USC (L 28-10)
Troy (W 56-0)
Kansas (W 39-32)
Iowa State (W 28-14)
Kansas State (W 21-3)
Texas (L 22-20)
Oklahoma St. (L 41-29)
Missouri (W 34-20)
Texas A&M (W 28-27)
True, I'd rather have NU's record this year, but still this is hardly an unstoppable team. Nebraska can be beaten and our guys can do it. Go Buffs!

huskermojo, thanks for the history.
Kelldog, I'm not sure I can predict this game. Our team has been wildly inconsistent all season. If the team that played ISU, Texas Tech and UGA shows up then I think we'll win. If the team that has struggled most of the season on offense and been abysmal on special teams comes to play then I think we may be in for a long game on national tv. I don't think we'll blow NU out. I'm not overly impressed with Nebraska, though they did keep it close against two good teams in USC and Texas. As for Dr.Tom's comments about matching up our run game and their defense or our passing defense to their offense, that is cause for concern. That said we've faced similar match ups all season long and while we've lost a number of those games, they haven't been the blow outs Tom is now predicting. Kansas State, Baylor and Texas Tech were all games where our weaknesses were supposedly exposed. To some extent that was a factor, but our guys managed to hang on for the most part. I'm sure I'll be yelling at my tv either way next week. When we played ISU and I had to watch the game as a series of arrows and explanations on ESPN's Gametracker, despite our dominance of that game I frequently yelled at my computer screen that we were giving up too many yards. I won't like our chances if we're down by a lot at half time.
Our guys will have a lot of emotions going into this game, but we haven't been very good about digging our way out of big deficits. The one thing I'll be watching for is Thadeus Washington. Washington and Wright get to play their final game against Nebraska in Lincoln. I expect to see some monster hits. If they can lead the defense to create turnover opportunities and forced decisions by the QB, thereby keeping our offense in the game, I think things could go well for us.

I read the rediculous amount of posts from yesterday and just laughed. Wish I could have chimed in with some wisdome for all of the brilliance spewing out of the dead red sea. Sorry though, I had to work. CU fans don't get paid to sit around and spread filth on other teams message boards. Just a few responses to some of the crap I have read.
1) NU fans, don't make excuses for losing to Texas. You fumbled the game away late, to a team that lost it's leader to the NFL. IF VY would have been playing, you would have been beaten badly.
2) Not all CU fans are pot-smokin hippies. Some of us are probably a lot like you. We just have the mental capacity to wrap our minds around cheering for more than one team. I.E. the NFL. Maybe you have heard of it. You know, the Broncos. The team you love to root for b/c you have nothing else to do when dead red season is over.
3) If the U of Nebraska is so great and your state is so charming, and Colorado is just rocks and dirt, then move back to Nebraska. Get out of our state.
4) Dr. Tom, are you even a real Dr. your 66-3 prediction is rediculous. Maybe take your fist out of your mouth while typing and you wouldn't have so many errors. You are not playing The Virginia Millitary Institute of Culinary Arts Intramural Squad. That was the first two weeks of your season. I don't think CU will win. I was at the Game last year when the students reacted like a bunch of jerks. I was embarrased. But don't act like you are all a bunch of saints.
5) ATLBUFF is right on and usually hits the nail right on the head, kind of like Lawerence Phillips to every woman and teenager he ever met.
Thanks a million. Angry NU fans react now with mispellings and bad grammar that you learn in that rollin wheat institution of yours.

Kiggdogg- more good smack, but let's not play the if Texas had VY card. It's irrelevant. What if USC had Bush and White back and what if Frazier would have been granted an extra year of eligibility then NU would have had 3 rings in a row back in the 90s. I am not for moral victories and NU is not back yet by any means. We aren't dominant obviously, but if winning a berth in the Conf champ and potentially going to a BCS bowl is mediocre then I will accept your definition of the word. Go Big Red!

Hey Nurse Radchett,
You do actually know what the NFL is. I am so proud of you. I thought maybe you only follow the CFL, where the long line of esteemed Nebraska QB's have gone onto enjoy 3 year careers as kick returners! Gooooooooood Job. Oh, and your so great coach callahan ran a decent team into the ground in the NFL. Might someone be forgetting 2 years ago against Texas Tech. Maybe try playing a top 20 schedule against teams that aren't in down years, and then I will think about paying attention to your posts.

Good thing that's what I was talking about. Yep, good thing. I never said Nebraska has a bad team this year. Just keep it in check when you start screaming fiesta bowl win and big 12 champs. You were ripe for a loss in 01 and we were last year. Again, 66-3 is a little out there. And yes, I did know that Bowlen was a boomer sooner. Did you know that he is from Canada eh'! Wow, you know a lot about the broncos. You must have spent some time in Colorado. Soaked up a little knowledge while hear too!

What's the series record b/t the two schools? ... 45-17 ... that looks like a possible final score for the game in Lincoln. CU's going thru similar growing pains just as the Huskers went through when Callahan & Co. arrived. I bet Hawkins figures this thing out and, hopefully, in a couple of years, the national pundits will be talking about a different 1 & 2 matchup this time of year.

Yep both sides are kindler and gentler today. It must be contagious. I agree with what Calibuff wrote earlier, it would be nice if this game actually meant something nationally. It hasn't mattered on that scale since '01, and it doesn't look like the Mobilehoma Land thieves want any part of renewing the rivalry we had with them either so unless something changes soon this TV date we have on Black(shirt) Friday may go the way of the dodo soon. Have a good and safe weekend to Buffs and my fellow Husker fans alike.

heck yeah it would be fun if it did mean something, but lets not get carried away; if the big red were to loose, or if somehow the buffs put a smack down on us, im sure after we are licking our wounds we will see then it meant plenty; if our boys in red feel that way, then we are in for a long day...but with all due respect to your observation; it isnt 01 thats for sure.

This game might not mean much nationally, but it will always mean something to these two universities. Although, I do not like the fact that Hawkins does not believe this is a red letter game. He will after next friday.

hey guys.....im feeling the love now....even with my flying urine comment yall are taking the 5th....that is good; very good. look, yesterday happened for a reason; anyone saying our teams arent rivals just need to visit the board from yesterday....we are no doubt rivals; hell, border war is more like it....maybe this gives me more insight to how ou and the horns feel about each other, or what about tomorrows game in columbus?...by the way, what crazy poetic whatever is that seeing the great schembeckler pass today before the game; anytime a great one like him dies before the biggest game they have ever played..thats a damn border war. could you guys imagine what that must be like for michigan fans? holy crap, i coudnt imagine if oz or mac passed the eve before we squared up for a 1 versus 2...gotta hand it to Bo; he would do anthing to get the maize and blue fired up...ill bet osu is feeling a collective "oh hell, thats all we needed"...him and hays are up there bitching each other out right now.....God bless Bo, college football, our teams, and all of us; this is what makes this sport what it is.

Huskermojo, Great history listen! Here's what Webster says about "Rivalry":
1 a : one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess b : one striving for competitive advantage
2 : one that equals another in desired qualities
17-45-2 based on this definition does not constitute a rivalry. It constitutes ass-whipping on a quite regular basis. Now, that AW has gone the other way, once or twice. 62-36 was not pleasant. I think most of my Red Friends would agree that despite the fact that we don't play them every year, our BIGGEST and most RESPECTED rival IS Oklahoma. We are 47-53 V OU. That sounds alot closer. Although we've had our share of negative tiffs with them, we both respect each other. The problem with this OTHER regular opponent is they fail to acknowledge and respect superiority. Once they win the next 29 match-ups, THEN they can turn the tables. Until then, tilt nipple and bow down to YOUR king, black and gold mold.
THIS IS NO RIVALRY! God love you for thinging it!

I don't if anyone still cares because this story is a day old now and the post about the candidates to replace Crosby is kind of lost in the shuffle, but I saw Eberhart kick a 52-yarder in high school against Monarch. I think he was the fifth-rated kicker in the nation and Crosby was the third in the same class. Thanks to everyone who posts on our site.

Ok -I've been checking this out and have to check in. First of all, what are all of you buff fans doing on OUR message board? NU owns cu and that includes this or any other message board we decide to take over. I promise that after next Fri. NU fans will be the only ones on here. cu "fans?" will abandon the team early in the 3rd - as usual.
I love how y'all keep saying if you beat us it means something and if we beat you it means nothing. You're right about that, welcome to husker land it's been like that for us every Sat. for 40 years. Also, I would like to point out to all cu "fans?" who think that all NU fans care about is our Football team while you have so many other great things going on, once again, I agree, College football is king in Lincoln. We place a much higher priority on our Team, our coaching staff, our stadium, our facilities, how many kids graduate, how we treat our guests on gameday ( any potential recruits reading this?) than you do in boulder. That's why NU will always be a superior program to cu. Also, your Micro Brews and Herb are only O.K - at least get that right!
