Hawkins shucks red-letter treatment
Mac, Barnett put special emphasis on Nebraska game
Nebraska week is no longer a red-letter time in literal terms inside the Colorado football program, but that doesn't mean the Buffs aren't seeing red this week as they prepare to face their nemesis in eight days.
For years under both former CU coaches Bill McCartney and Gary Barnett, the schedule board hanging in the team room featured Nebraska week in red letters with every other opponent listed in black. McCartney began the tradition in the 1980s when he chose to emphasize beating the Cornhuskers as a way to give his program a goal for which to aim.
When Barnett was fired last December, the red letters left with him.

To be clear, coach Dan Hawkins didn't intentionally kill the tradition when he arrived from Boise State as Barnett's successor, even though it's not his style to emphasize the importance of one game above others. Apparently, it was never an issue brought to Hawkins' attention.
"For us, at 2-9, everybody is a red-letter day," Hawkins said after Wednesday's practice.
Hawkins said he has never used a tactic such as the piece of red-letter motivation employed by McCartney and Barnett. However, he is acutely aware of the importance of Nebraska week to CU fans and he doesn't expect it to mean any less to the program just because it's not in red letters on a board somewhere.
Quarterback Bernard Jackson said the schedule with red letters might be gone from the team room, but the passion for defeating the Cornhuskers remains as strong as ever within the program.
Jackson said beating Nebraska has been one of the program's primary goals every season he has been in Boulder and that didn't change this year.
"It's up there on the board as clear as day, 'Beat Nebraska,'" he said of the team's list of goals. "It's not in red.
"Once we took that board down, we knew things were going to be different around here. We set goals, every goal was something that was within the team. We accomplished most of them. There are some we left up there that we didn't accomplish. Nebraska is one of them and we need to go out there and get a win."
Former CU quarterback and current running backs coach Darian Hagan played under McCartney during the early days of the tradition. He believes it served its purpose and was a valuable motivational tool at the time.
Hagan said Barnett took it a step further. Not only did he list Nebraska week in red letters, he painted on a gold box around the games in November because he considered it the most crucial part of the season.
Hagan said it doesn't bother him that the traditions were discontinued.
"Every coach is different with different philosophies," Hagan said. "He does it his way amping this game up. He's doing a good job at it.
"... It's always a red-letter game. We're going to go in there with fire in our eyes and try and hit them in the mouth and kick their butt. So when they go in there two weeks from now and play in the Big 12 Championship, they're going to be limping in. That's our goal."

Not that we need anymore motivation, but thanks Hagan. I am sure that quote will make it around South Stadium if it hasn't already. Ralphie is gonna go home freezing once he is skinned next Friday. GBR!

Hey Redman - easy on the Lincold south stadium and the "we" stuff remarks. Are YOU playing? What motivation does UNL have right now to not need any more? They need plenty. Knowing this CU team, especially the seniors on it; not only will corn get husked, they are going to nibble all the kernels off and share the rest with Ralphie.

If we fail to land any WRs or TEs in this class we won't have to look far for missed opportunities. Drew Davis, 4 star WR, is probably headed to the north west or perhaps Georgia Tech. Steve Watson, 3 or 4 star TE from Mullen HS whose father coaches for the Broncos, is headed to Michigan. Devin Aguilar, 3 star WR from Mullen HS, is committed to Washington. Daniel Blackledge, 3 star WR from the Springs, is headed to Washington State. Alvin Logan, 3 star WR from Regis Jesuit, just committed to Washington. Of these guys, Blackledge and Logan never had offers from CU. We're still in the hunt for Boyles, Simas,Richmond, Celestine, and Mahina. We could sign two or three of these guys or we could come up empty. If we fail to sign any of these guys, we'll still have receivers at CU, but our priorities for the next cycle will need to change somewhat.

Nebraska will always be the red headed stepchild of Colorado.

random thoughts from a husker (surely you dont mind us on your board, right?...except the KELLDOG person obviously)
man, i had to get in on this.....a husker here from carolina beach, nc....used to live in broomfield, people were rude; the NATIVE stickers, rich hippies and the like- had to go, but still love it there for the beauty.
cu fans didnt even seem to exist much when i was there unless they beat nebraska, then they were everywhere, until the next season around colorado state time, then they dissapeared again. also, i never quite understood why cu fans, in general, especially the students, are so mean and bitter....anyway, just wanted to say hi buffs, good luck, and embrace your coach; for once you guys have one with a bit of class.

now why are we on this board? well man, go to huskerpedia.com...its our football "drudgereport"..we read a football article (this one) thats linked here, than on the bottom of the article is a bbs with a bunch of stupid comments about superiority over nebraska...as when i lived there, the nebraska hate thing with colorado NATIVES is always about everything but football. you got beautiful mountains, nebraska has football, and thats pretty simple for all of us to understand.

Um, Nebraska beat a CU team that had been mediocre for years. Wow. I guess we owe you guys for helping us get rid of GB. I seem to recall CU destroying Nebraska 62 to 36 in 2001. We split the next four games 2-2. You guys have more history than CU does, so that 2001 loss hurt a lot more than our loss last season. That 2001 loss started what can only be described as a real slide in NU history. This year even if you guys win, everyone will say big deal you beat a 2-9 team. You're expected to win and you won't win any plaudits for doing so. We, on the other hand, will be the source of much discussion if we upset NU. Yes, we could get blown out if our team plays poorly like they have too often this season. If our guys play like they're capable of though, we'll win and your team, a mere shadow of its once illustrious past, won't be able to stop the Buffs. I remain pessimistic we'll get it done and a win over a poor ISU team hasn't convinced me otherwise. Jackson is too unpredictable for me to make any confident predictions and if he gets hurt, any chance we might have will quickly vanish. That said, no way Nebraska blows us out by 60 plus points. I predict that either team will win by a margin of 15 or less points. Too many questions remain to accurately predict a score.

Weis how very typical, what are you worried about then if you are so confident of your superior 2-9 team? We are most definitely not anyone's stepchild and certainly not the puffs'. Free country by the way, not to mention you are a RIVAL now officially, there is a bill passed saying so...you do know what that means right....? A suggestion, smoke some more hippie lettuce and make more love and less war, homey and tear down your native sticker even though you are cornfused and really from Council Bluffs.

CU Fans, have fun b/c the only bowl experience you will have this year will be trying to pick up a 7-10 split in Boulder while the Huskers are winning the Fiesta Bowl. CU has been, and will continue to be one of the biggest disappointments in college football. You guys completely imploded last year. I honestly felt sorry for you last year during the Big 12 Championship. Your fans: awful. The CU Husker game last year was a complete disgrace to your fans. Try this: We lose an absolute gut-wrenching game to Texas in the last minute that totally could have been prevented by us not fumling the ball (not to mention-had we won we were looking at a top 10 ranking)-do we boo? No way, we gave our team, and Texas a standing ovation. CU Fans will never have half the class that Nebraska fans and players emulate, and thats why you will never be better than second best. HEY ALTBUFF: remember that 63-21 in 2001? That "real slide" lasted three years. A new "real slide" began for CU Football when we beat you 30-3 at your home, almost lost the Big 12 North, and then went 2-9 the next season. How is that for a "real slide?" All I can say is, watch out for Nebraska the next couple years. There is undeniable talent everywhere in that program, and a huge part of it is coming back.

i hear ya Kelldog...well said. i didnt mean to storm a buffalo bbs today when i got to work; just saw the board at the bottom of the page, and it looked a bit ugly. and how i know how much it would mean for yall to win; im a ridiculously emphatic husker fan, but im not stupid (at least not all the time i hope); a wounded animal can be the most dangerous. ralphie is not a happy camper, the cu kids must feel awful about the season, and cu has a knack for bustin us up no matter what the line should be...do i think we will win? of course, how could you not? but would it surprise me to see us down at the half; not in the least. ill be just glad when its over; i hate this game really. and like it was said earlier by someone, this game is dangerous for nu; a win is nothing but expected, and a loss would be very tough when you outright win the BTN, then back in after a loss to a 2-8 team, which is what would transpire.
back to the cold hard facts; nu should breeze in this one:
nu 42-17 (but dont bet on it!)

The Buffs have nothing to lose. The Huskies are packing their purses for the Big 12 champ game. We are going to give them a solid blow right in their teeth and it's going to hurt. By the time they figure out where they are, the score will read CU 31 NU 20 and they will be wondering what in the hell happened. Then NU will get rolled over and end up in the Holiday Bowl. ENJOY!

Nurse Tom,
You call this season "prominence"? You barely beat a no.24 team in T A&M and that's all you have done. I guess that makes you, what, no. 23? And didn't you go to overtime with KU? I hate to tell you but I think this is your peak season. And as far as Hawkins goes, smart Corn fans would switch coaches with us in a heartbeat. At least we got our first choice when we changed coaches.

and if i heard a cu fan bring that kind of stuff around me while in the state for a game, i would harm you, really. now there is something for you to read.

DrTom is that a PhD or an MD? In the comments section of an 11/14 story titled "Changes starting to pay off at NU," some guy calling himself AZ_Husker predicted Nebraska would win 77 to 12. He went on to explain that our 12 points would come from 4, 50+ yard field goal attempts, of which we'd drain 3/4ths of them. Hmmm, sounds like 9 points to me. If you're a PhD, you may need to school AZ_Husker in some rudimentary mathematics. If you're an M.D. you may want to check him for heat stroke.

Buff fans! Red Nation does not consider this a rivalry game. Colorado SHOULD take great joy in thumping the 'Huskers, because it doesn't happen that often. 17-45-2 is not something to be proud of. That's OK, you've got Ralphie. He's something to be proud of. Trubuff, we in Husker Nation are happy with your view Corn-a-han. I'll leave it at that. If we wanted your opinion of OUR coach, we'd give it to you. We should all except progress from our new coaches. You too should not be happy next season with any less than 3 wins. 4 wins would be cause for celebration. Finishing with 2 wins this year, OK maybe 3 wins, including the win you will get in Lincoln, (we'll give it to you, if it makes you feel better about yourself.)will be a good start for your new coach. GB is looking pretty good about now. We know you hate us, but we truly don't hate you guys. We just worry about your people. What do I mean by "your people". First, we fear the "Compton Corner" of Folsom State Pen. Please keep the inmates in their schakles during the game. We don't want to get hit by flying Boulder's. Second, win or lose, don't threaten our people's live's in the parking lot, before or after the game. I know the "Knife Swingers" originate from those parts, so tell them to take it easy. Third, we know you mountain folks like to do a lot of climbing, so please, don't climb over the rail DURING the game. Wait until the game is over and then come over the rail. Hope all this helps. We know you guys are smart, hell, collectively probably smarter than Red Nation, but only when you apply yourself. Just follow Coach Hawkins example. Don't get too excited coming to play the Huskers, it's no big deal.

Lets look at some facts:
Boulder: Population 91k
Lincoln: Population 239k
Hmmm, sounds like there are more people in Lincoln. Boulder must be a ghost town with nothing to do, no cars, and no electricity!
Series History:
45-17-2 in Favor of Nebraska
Total Points:
1612- NU 958- CU
Largest Margin of Victory-
CU- 62-36 (26 pts) NU- 59-0 (59 pt margin)
Ouch....
I know you Buff fans hate that Nebraska ends nearly every one of your seasons on a sour note, but we don't hold it against you. Part of the reason we as Husker fans feel so much pride in our team is that the majority of us don't trash talk the way some of you Buff fans do. I remember as a kid going to CU/NU games in Boulder, my father would have to remove our liscence plates to avoid vandalism. Even if the 62-36 debacle had happened in Lincoln, I doubt any Buff fan would feel unsafe leaving his plates on his car. Short story long, we're looking forward to seeing you guys in Lincoln. Its always an interesting game, and I'm personally looking forward to seeing if NU can go 5-0 in BTN play. I can make every buff fan here ONE promise: Our student section, while also probably wasted on gameday, will not throw their drinks, bottles, or other paraphanalia on the field at your players. Some overzealous fans might throw some Tostitos, however...

I think that you forgot one point husker fans; this is not your website. It is one thing to see a link to this website and read the article, but to join in on the comment board is very weak. Sorry I am not much for the humor, but when it comes to NU I feel no sorrow to treat you right. I was born and raised to absolutely despise NU. Thanks to fans like you I did not even like tractors as a kid. Thanks alot!!!

Its not YOUR website either, unless you work for the Daily Camera Weis. Semantics! If you were raised to hate, thats pretty sad...as well as frightening. How do you feel about minority groups? I shudder to think.

Hey Canesrule, I grew up in S. Florida a 'Canes fan and you my friend are a disgrace. By the way you should check your facts before trying to talk smack, CU was in the top 5 in 1971, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995. Top 6-10 in 1961, 1996, 2001. Not bad for a school that has also put out numerous Rhodes-Scholars, astronauts and a Supreme Court Justice.

Puff-
I have two things for you:
1)Learn to recognize sarcasm;;..!?:
2)Post something intelligent once in a while.
Weis-You are a sad, angry person. Hope for your sake you don't throw your cup of pee pee at the wrong guy or key the wrong car or slash the wrong tire. We might be reading your obit before too long if you do. I guess that kind of stuff isn't popular with people if they catch you in the act, and "stand up for themselves" as you put it.

Nice bit of research. Don’t forget Median HHI of $40,000 in Lincoln vs. $55,861 in Boulder. Just to give you a point of reference, that would put Lincoln in about the same HHI as La Plata County in Colorado. I also went to CU/NU games as a kid. You kind and gentle folks sure show a mean streak when you get a couple of beers in ya.

Buff, 5-what? Will that be your 06 and 07 season win total? Just checking. By the way, good response keep trying, you'll get there. P.S. I have NO site, but I should, shouldn't I. Damn, you complimented me and didn't even know it. Mama-cita, you are too easy.
Trubuff, We come to your site to get ourselves lathered up for the game. Isn't this GREAT! We love you guys.
DrTom, Ease up on the 66-3. 6-3 would be fine with me. Anyway, wasn't that the CU v. Monatana score. HAHAHA
Korsmo, Let 'um bad-mounth us. We like it. If we didn't like it, we wouldn't be here.
Buff, We like everyone! But we understand why you don't like us. That tends to happen when you someone's bitch for the better part of 100 years. Plus, we want you to do good. Playing a 2-9 team doesn't help.
Weis9660, Don't you have film to study, big boy. Speaking of South Bend. Now those are good people. Next to Red Faithful, they are the best fans in the country.
TheBuff, Did you say "Dominance"? We never said that. You must have beeeeen refering to your last intimate moment.
CaliBuff, Why go to our boards, when we're having so much fun here.
RedMan, Here's my list of worst college out-doors venues for Rocky Mountain HIGH quality viewership:
1. Folsom State
2. LA Memorial Mosilium. Six blocks north of that joint and your in Bagdad.

You’re great! I love the fact it ook you a half of a day to come up with your whimsical response. Even better that it is written in country bumpkin. That must take some thinkin’. Let's stop the bickering, come together and love one another...on that note...win or lose it still sucks to go to Nebraska. Yeah our fans may have been a tad rude the last few years but the atmosphere has really changed since Hawk. On another note...this canes guy needs to learn to speaky english por favor.
Will the buffs be underdogs? Yes.
Will the Huskers probably win? Yes.
Do their players have more heart? Questionable.
Does CU have sweeter uniforms? Bleed black and gold baby...hells yeah.
Are some folks in Nebraska jealous of the higher SES and diverse atmosphere of CU? Yes.
Will CU get blown out 66-3? Yeah, cause Nebraska's new signal caller is Vince Young and Reggie Bush had one year of elegibility left and they decided to return to college football and play for Nebraska...riggggght.
Rounding it out hopefully it will be a hard hitting game on both sides because a 70-3 routing isn't fun to watch if you are a fan of the unpredictablity of college football.

Buffwinkle, To be bluntly honest with you, Hawkins was GREAT hire. Red nation needs a strong Buff team. Give it time, it WILL come around. We might bang on each other inside this conference, but we I support our conference, no matter who. Red Friend's, SORRY, even Vermin. It does us NO good to see CU down. It hurts us. This game hurts us. We truly want no part of 2-9. That is the best F...ing 2-9 team in the country. I'm not trying to blow sunshine, I'm stating facts. Look at the Georgia game. Georgia's good even though they're off a bit this year, they're good. This 2-9 team can beat us if we play the way we played against OSU. I'm tried of the second half melt-downs. The Blackshirts need to take some No-Dose at halftime. If we play the way we should, we should win. Notice the word should!

The Skers will roll next week, let there be no doubt. I did want to share something with all of you though. Hawkins was spewing stupid comments from his man pleaser and they caught it on tape. I think this video pretty much settles who has bragging rights in football. The Buffs can have bragging rights on.....ummm, big hills and a bunch of rocks I guess. Enjoy....

But Hawkins knows the importance of hate up in Boulder. At his homecoming speech he said that even at 0 and 6, the worst day as a Buff is still better than the best day as a Husker. Trying to rally the forces behind the hate leadership that worked up there in the past? From what I've seen he looks to be a positive leader. Maybe he was feeling the pressure.

Huskers eating Buff Burgers in Lincoln
I'm a Husker living in FL and as a previous poster said, CO fans are fair weather fans. I've never met 1 person in Tampa who would admit to being a CO fan. I guess that they haven't been good enough to come out of the closet. So much for the "Buff Nation"
Huskers put the air in this game and run it up early. Head to Barry's for drinks at Half.

It's been interesting reviewing some of the previous comments. I've been a longtime Colorado Husker (grew up in Fort Morgan, CO with many Nebraska relatives / I'm a Neb alum now living in Wash. state). I've also been a lukewarm Buffs fan since my first game at Folsom Field during the early 80's when CU wore royal blue and gold. In 1986 (?) I watched from the stands (& in horror) as O.C. Oliver and company took the first of several W's during the 80's and 90's as the rivalry began under coach Mac. Rivalry? Yes. It's a classic border war. Nebraska has lost it's yearly rival game with Oklahoma and the CU vs NU game is now what it is. (1971 final rankings NU 1, OU 2, CU 3... sweet sugar / 1994 NU 1, CU 3 enjoyable as well) At any rate... the CU vs NU rivalry of the last 2 decades has usually included close games and the games always have huge implications. My 2 favorite games are from 1992 and 2005. 1992 was both Tommie Frazier's and my freshman year in Lincoln. CU was considered among the nation's elite and Nebraska was ready to breakout and enter into the role of annual national championship contender. It was a rainy and chilly Halloween night at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska won the game 52-7 and I stormed the field with my friends and a few thousand other students. I hovered around the south endzone goal post and watched it come down. Some dude pulled out a hacksaw... sure sign of planning ahead... although I think the post just came down with brute force.
2005 was another favorite and for different reasons. That 30-3 decisive win in hostile territory was a statement game at the very least. Nebraska is progressing. They're recruiting great talent and the offensive schemes ( when executed properly) are very difficult to cover. It's a brand new excitement. Speaking of excitement... Buff fans take notice of Bobby Purify's uncle. The 6'4" WR is sure to make some noise next Friday. Go Big XII & Go Big Red!

Huskermojo, Great history listen! Here's what Webster says about "Rivalry":
1 a : one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess b : one striving for competitive advantage
2 : one that equals another in desired qualities
17-45-2 based on this definition does not constitute a rivalry. It constitutes ass-whipping on a quite regular basis. Now, that AW has gone the other way, once or twice. 62-36 was not pleasant. I think most of my Red Friends would agree that despite the fact that we don't play them every year, our BIGGEST and most RESPECTED rival IS Oklahoma. We are 47-53 V OU. That sounds alot closer. Although we've had our share of negative tiffs with them, we both respect each other. The problem with this OTHER regular opponent is they fail to acknowledge and respect superiority. Once they win the next 29 match-ups, THEN they can turn the tables. Until then, tilt nipple and bow down to YOUR king, black and gold mold.

This blog is proof that mindless Nebraska fans have no life, are in a Red haze and nothing can change their minds. Yeah, Colorado fans are sometimes harsh to the Nebraska horde. I am sure glad this season is almost over, I look forward to next, but I don't live only for football. There is more to life. I do love my alma mater and will always be a Buff. I am a Native Coloradoan and can't ever remember having a harsh work for the Husker fanatics. Don't characterize us all, it further demonstrates your ignorance.

I just wrote a post on Woelk's column about how the Nebraska fans refuse to call the CU game a rivalry then spend all of their time writing silly bitter post on a Boulder website. In my post I predicted that the bitterness would begin later in the week not realizing that its already started. Sweet. Red letter indeed.
GO BUFFS!!!
Message to Nebraska Fans:
Keep the posts coming. We appreciate your keeping the rivalry a rivalry while we are on a down year.

As far as best CU-NU games. My vote goes to Lincoln 1990 when after 3 fumbles in the first half Bieniemy hits paydirt 3 times to lead CU to victory in the second half.
Posted by DENVER on November 19, 2006 at 7:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Okay, time for a proper perspective on the whole rivalry issue.
I moved to Denver two years ago from Nebraska. I will always be a Husker loyal (also a Raider fan). The NATIVE stickers do not bother me. Most natives whether in Nebraska or Colorado are on federal reservations running casinos. (I do not believe the Natives in Nebraska are allowed to open casinos. They are permitted in Colorado.) Sorry, I digress.
CU is a rival to some extent; however, not in the same context of Oklahoma or even Missouri rivalries. OU is a rival for many reasons. There were several conference and national championship at stake when NU and OU have played. Their fans are a class act. As for MU, they play us tough no matter who's got a winning record. To me, MU is a coin toss every year. I am always nervous playing MU. MU fans, like CU, are an acquired taste. MU would get a standing ovation in Memorial stadium before CU. They have a little more respect and a little less out right hate and disgust for NU. Not all Husker fans share my opinion.
I do believe it is imperative CU develope a top-notch program. It's good for CU, NU and the North Division. I think their fans would support and appreciate the student athlete from the stands and the pocket book. One of the excuses I hear from CU alums and boosters is they have to compete with the Broncos, CSU and Denver University. I disagree. The Broncos are a for profit organization, why do they need financial backing? They don't. The Broncos are sold out every game plus all the John Lynch jerseys they sell. As for the other Universities in Colorado, let their alums and boosters worry about their alma mater. CU's alumni association and booster clubs should work together to build the program. I don't see the committment for CU alums and boosters as I do at NU. It's about bucks, committment and class fans.
I went to the NU v CU game in Boulder last year, had a great time. I wasn't threatened or taunted maybe because I had tickets in the NU section and did not come accross any of those students who were tossed out for throwing items onto the field.
Colorado is beautiful, the mountains are great, it's home, and even the sprawl of Denver has grown on me. I do miss Nebraska thunderstorms, sunsets and of course Lincoln on gameday.
If NU kicks the snot out of CU, I will be satisfied. If it's an exiting game, the better - one more notch to a genuine rivalry.
GO BIG RED!!!
