BHS girls edge Chatfield
Teams will meet again on Thursday
Boulder and Chatfield had a great scouting opportunity Saturday afternoon.
In the meantime, they also had to win.
The Panthers and Chargers played Saturday in the fifth-place girls game of the Fairview Festival, five days before they are scheduled to play again. The Panthers won the first meeting, 53-48, and that was really all they were concerned about Saturday.
"We just wanted to concentrate on our game because we really just are working toward our league," Boulder coach Dynelle Tadlock said. "We know traditionally what the teams in our league do, so now we just want to concentrate on our game."
The teams are scheduled to play again Thursday at 7 p.m. at Chatfield (2-4). If Saturday's game is any indication, Thursday night's game will be pretty entertaining.
The teams were either tied or within a bucket for most of the last four minutes of the game. Either team could have lost control because there were 15 total free throws in the fourth quarter, but they combined to go 13-for-15.
Boulder's Helen Hartman hit two of those free throws and made a bucket inside that gave her team a slight advantage heading down the stretch.
Hartman scored four points in the Panthers' 17-point quarter. Mariah Metoyer scored the rest. The junior guard was 6-for-8 from the free throw line and also made a 3-pointer. She finished with 24 points to lead all scorers.
"This helped us know where we have to grow," Metoyer said. "We've lost some and that's been hard on us. So it was good to come out and give all we have."
The Panthers (4-3) learned as much about themselves as their opponent with the win. Ten players were in the game and seven scored. They'll need that type of depth when they do get into the Centennial League.
"A lot of our players came off the bench and played well," Tadlock said. "I was happy to see that we got a lot of good minutes from those bench players."
