The No. 6-ranked Florida Gators spoiled the Buffs' season opener, defeating CU 16-9 on Saturday afternoon at Kittredge Field.

No. 17 Colorado was led offensively by senior Miranda Stinson, sophomore Sadie Grozier and freshman Charlie Rudy; who each recorded a pair of goals. Florida had a trio of players, Shannon Kavanagh, Lindsey Ronbeck and Grace Haus, who tallied four goals apiece.

"Looking at the stats it seems pretty even. We had a lot of people being a threat, but we needed more from them from the start," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "I thought initially we were playing scared and we were watching a lot of lacrosse being played instead of playing it. At the end of the day we need people to step up and do a little bit more for us."

Florida got on the board first and scored the first seven goals of the game before CU's offense was able to find the back of the net. Senior Samantha Nemirov got CU's offense going at 16:31 in the first and less than four minutes later, Grozier tacked on another goal for the Buffs.

The Gators would get one more goal in the half, but the Buffs recorded another pair of goals from sophomore Devon Bayer and Rudy to end the first half down by four (8-4).

In the second half, the Buffs scored five more goals, but UF did not slow down. The Buffs were able to cut the deficit to just four goals twice in the second stanza, but both times the Gators pulled ahead as they tallied eight goals in the half.

The Buffs struggled a bit early in the draw circle, winning just four of 12 in the first half. But after some adjustments, which included having freshman Kate Burnside take the draw, led the Buffs to win eight of 14 draws in the second half.

CU's defense also played well as junior goalkeeper Julia Lisella stopped 12 shots. The Buffs recorded 12 caused turnovers — Stinson led CU with three, while senior Olivia Aschman collected two.

Colorado heads to Blacksburg, Va. to face No. 14 Virginia Tech on Saturday.
