Former University of Colorado golfer David Oraee shot a 3-under-par 67 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday and is tied for sixth, two shots off the lead at Olympia Fields, Ill.

Matt NeSmith holds the first-round lead at 5-under 65 at Olympic Fields Country Club. Four players are tied a shot back at 66.

Oraee, who played in the NCAA Championship Finals earlier this year as an individual, shot 33-34-67 on the North Course at Olympia Fields and is tied with two other players at 67.

"I didn't hit it great," Oraee said. "I was kind of all over with the tee shots ... but I putted well today."

Oraee, who is playing in his first U.S. Amateur, said he plans to use the same aggressive game plan when he plays the South Course in the second round Tuesday.

"The South is not a cake walk either," he said. "I just need to do the same thing, just be smart and kind of leave myself easy putts and try not to make more than bogey, and the rest should take care of itself."
