SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Colorado senior Justin Bardgett carded a 4-under par 68 on Monday to finish the first round of the Gifford Championships at CordeValle in a six-way tie for third place.

Bardgett had six birdies, but one of his two bogeys came on the last hole and it cost him at least a tie for the lead. Bardgett is one stroke back of UCLA`s Pedro Figueiredo and Augusta State`s Taylor Floyd, who are tied for first.

The rest of the Buffs didn`t fare so well and CU was tied for 11th with a team score of 368. Duke leads at 350, with Lamar second at 352.

"We`re really pleased with Justin`s round," CU coach Roy Edwards said. "He played solid, consistent all day, other than the one swing on his final hole. He`s right there near the top of the leaderboard among the best in college golf and it`s exciting for him."
