At one point during Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre's media day press conference associate athletic director Dave Plati handed the microphone to a reporter who asked a question entirely in Spanish about new placekicker Diego Gonzalez from Guadalupe, Mexico.
"Diego?" MacIntyre said after the question. "Yes, I understood everything you said."
The line got a big laugh and Plati revealed defensive coordinator Kent Baer had played a part in setting up the awkward moment.
MacIntyre said Gonzalez cannot play this year under NCAA rules governing international student-athletes. He said it has to do with how high school runs in to college in Mexico and how the NCAA determines when a player's eligibility begins.
"He has a powerful, powerful leg," MacIntyre said. "A really bright young man. We're really excited about him being here."
