Freshman fullback Christian Powell, a 6-foot, 240-pounder from Upland, Calif., is already turning heads.

"He's going to be a great Buff that a lot of people are going to remember for a long time," Bieniemy said.

Senior safety Ray Polk said he has yet to square up on a hit with Powell, but has heard other CU defenders talk about colliding with the freshman.

"Yeah, he's a bruiser," Polk said. "He's going to be a guy that I think is going to come into this system and play for us right away."

Bieniemy said he's never had a fullback as physically ready as a freshman -- not even Lawrence Vickers, who had a great career at CU and is now entering his seventh NFL season.

"LV, don't get me wrong, was a grown man when he got here, but he wasn't on the level that Christian is," Bieniemy said. "That's not knocking LV."

Bieniemy called Powell "unique" and "a complete football player." He praised Powell's ability to hit, block and catch the ball out of the backfield. He also hinted that Powell could be a key figure in a lot of different ways for CU.

"Probably not since we've seen Lawrence Vickers and the Brandon Drumms of the world (has CU had) a guy that can line up also at the tailback position and give you some carries," Bieniemy said. "He brings a different dimension. You can line up in multiple (formations) with him."

Bieniemy is not declaring Powell the starter, however. He said he's been very pleased that junior Alex Wood and freshman Clay Norgard have also done well during camp.
