BOULDER, Colo. -
Taking the next step in Boulder requires winning.
The Colorado football program has probably gone as far as it's going to go in recruiting -- it actually took a step back this year -- on the back of Dan Hawkins' hard work and gregarious personality. Even the coach acknowledged Wednesday during his press conference announcing the 2009 recruiting class that to attract the next level of recruit on a more consistent basis, the Buffs must produce better results on the field beginning next fall.
"Definitely a little bit. No question about that," Hawkins said when asked how three consecutive losing seasons impact the job of adding talent to the program. "I really think we're poised to have a breakout year. I'm really excited when we do break that plane and we kind of get going, then I think you're going to see it, you know, it gets easier in a sense."
National signing day came and went with CU landing a decent number of three and four-star recruitsamong its 19-member class, especially if one first considers the past three seasons have ended with 2-10, 6-7 and 5-7 records. CU even landed a five-star player for the third year in a row in Legacy High School defensive end Nick Kasa.
Hawkins and his staff are consistently mentioned among the favorites of plenty of highly ranked players these days. Last year coming off a loss in a bowl game, enough of those players stuck with the Buffs because the perception was that the program was heading in the right direction after the debacle of 2006.
CU went 5-7 this season and it played a part in fewer star players choosing black and gold this time around. Those choices were reflected in overall class rankings Wednesday night by the two major recruiting services. Scout.com ranked the 2009 class No. 59 nationally. Rivals.com ranked it No. 48 falling from No. 15 in 2008.
Hawkins doesn't care much what the recruiting services have to say. He loves the players he is bringing to Boulder beginning in June when freshmen arrive and enroll in summer classes to get a head start on academics and accustomed to campus. Fourteen of those players will come from nine other states. Five are in-state prospects.
"I probably had more great times and great interaction and great fellowship in the homes of some of these kids than I've had in a long time," Hawkins said.
Hawkins said some members of this class will definitely make an immediate impact. He refrained from naming names in an effort to not heap pressure on the young men, but some candidates are obvious because they're joining a program in need of help at their positions.
The most likely recruits to earn playing time in 2009 are four defensive linemen led by Kasa, who was ranked the No. 4 defensive end in the country. Defensive tackles Edward Nuckols and Nate Bonsu and defensive end Forrest West complete a foursome that could wreak havoc in the Big 12 in the future.
Three wide receivers also joined the program Wednesday and all three could earn playing time quickly. Junior college transfer Andre Simmons will be expected to play if he qualifies academically. Freshmen Jarrod Darden and Terdema Ussery each possess the size and athleticism to compete right away.
Hawkins said he and his assistants worked hard to find the right type of players and personalities to add to the roster while filling needs. They found players from winning programs who were leaders and team captains and also performed well in the classroom.
It's clear CU coaches also sought to give themselves options while working with a small class size for the second year in a row. Hawkins said he has two scholarships remaining that he could choose to use before training camp in August. "I think it's a very athletic class," Hawkins said. "A lot of guys in here could play a number of positions, can run, jump, catch, throw, offense, defense. And I think that's really awesome."

Good class Coach Hawkins and staff, thanks for your hard work, especially the guys that have stuck with the program through thick and thin - Cabral, Hagan, etc. Bleed Black & Gold!!!

Good Morning all you young buffalo.
You old ones too.
Hawk = Ten wins and no excuses.
Bravado? Maybe, maybe not. Knowing what has been put together the last three years? Probably.
77 days until the spring game.....
40k no excuses
and there better be 15k students in attendance....
What you doing Bohn/Plati to make this happen...I haven't heard a word about it. Last year you waited until a week before to start the process. Losers..... Do you guys need some marketing help? Based on attendance at your games (fb/bb) you do...
Plati, Montana says you are a nice guy...maybe it's time for a change? This ain't 1985 anymore..
The kids work out all year round..you need to get the fans involved all year round...
This ain't intramurals brother...

This old buffalo will make the trek to the Spring game. Might look you up, VK.
For a long time I've been saying, "wait 'til next year", but I'm excited about next fall. A few less injuries, a kicker that can make field goals, more experience on the O-line and who knows, maybe 10 and 0. What's the point in having goals if you don't stretch yourself?
I like the fact that Hawk is trying to recruit guys that are leaders as well as athletes, coupled with being good students. Remember Fairbanks? He recruited some great athletes but they couldn't spell C A T.
See you guys at the Spring game.

Not only does Hawk need to start winning to attract recruits, I would think he needs to win for job security. This year, he has essentially all players he recruited, not GB retreads. If they can't win, guess whose fault it is.
Yes, too much can be made of recruit class rankings, but those arguments tend to be made by people and places that rank low--and lose a lot. I doubt if they're dissing the rankings in Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Columbus, etc. today.
C'mon Hawk, it's time to put up or....

Good class. Doesn't have the splash last year did, but it fills needs, D-Line and Receiver. Once you get past 15 or 20 in the recruit rankings it becomes a whole lot more subjective and about quantity of recruits. Hawkins is better at mining 2 and 3 stars than most from his BSU days. Wasn't Emory Blake a 3 star when we were recruiting him? Now that he signed with Auburn they have him as a 4 star?
VK, you're in Boulder right? Can you be Simmons' tutor so he can qualify? We need that 6'3" Buffalo!

Now now now don't bash Helfrich to much last year was just one of them years , new players filling for injured players and blah blah blah we all know how it went. We had our chances to win more games but fell short, life goes on. This year no excuses the offense is 3 years old and should be hitting the 400 yd per game mark. We have the talent in place now with even more talent coming in , so no more excuses. Lets just get it done and start with CSU by blowing the doors off .

I hope CU is on the cusp of something bigger and better. I hope that last year was rough due to the really difficult schedule - lots of still young players - and tons of key injuries.
My hope is that CU is not as bad as last year's record indicates, and with a break or two this year - a better schedule - and more seasoned players, the Buffs might indeed turn a corner.
Remember last spring? By about this time last year we had several players arrested. By the way - whatever became of Kota? Did he drop out? Leave the team?
And then there were guys like Simmas who forgot to go to class. And guys like Itis and Major who got hurt before the season. Lets hope that does not happen again this year and we can get the ball rolling.
Go Buffs.

I am hoping the injury bug that ravaged our team last year has moved onto the bug eater state of NU and make it , its permanent home. Just saw video of our recruits on cubuffs.com I believe when Gus Handler is done with football he should go into the WWE he was not only blocking guys but taking them down, running them out of bounds this dude has a mean streak.

I remember his first year at the beginning of the season hawk said we'd be in the thick of it at the end. He won 2 games.
I don't think we'll ever win with hawk at the helm. he is not a good game day coach. A lot of our games I feel like we're not prepared to play at all. Ultimatley we need to find a new coach.

Great video of Hawk.
When the wins come (and that happens 2009 with 9-10 wins) the classes will be consistently in the top 25.
I think many people fail to understand the damage this program incurred in 2002, 2003 and 2004 due to recruiting restrictions placed by the university. The cupboard was bare when Hawk came here and it has resulted in a longer turn around then most of us thought.
That has caused two problems: 1) Lack of upper class (jrs and srs) on the field and 2) rushing in young kids to play (which led to more injuries).
That's pretty much passed now (still thin at receiver and d-line experience), but beginning 2009 and beyond CU will be THE team in the Big 12 North and, in about three years, recruiting close to OU and UT levels. In six years, regularly fighting for Big 12 title.
Smart eyes can see where we were, where we have come to and where we are going.

To early to look at next year's recruiting needs? Naw:
Strictly a guess based off of the eligibility chart on Scout.
QB - Austin Hinder -How can we pass on trying to land the top player in the class who also happens to be a QB?
RB - We'll need at least one in this class to make sure there isn't too big of a gap.
WR-2 or 3 We got a good start, but will need a couple every year to keep the skill level high.
TE- 2 or 3 We graduate 4 next year. Plus we need the depth.
OL-3-4 Every class needs at least this many.
DL-3-4 Same as O-line. Every class should have this many.
LB- 3-4 Like TEs we lose a big group of LBs after next year. We need to start bringing them in again.
S- 2 We need the depth.
CB-2 This is the Big 12. Lots of top QBs and WRs so we need the CBs to play with them.

As I watched the press conference yesterday, I couldn't help but think to myself "Man, I wish Hawk would talk more about X's and O's and how these guys perform on the football field."
When asked to describe many of the recruits, he talked about how they're great people, how they're "huggers", about how they have great smiles-- And all of those intangibles matter, don't get me wrong... But c'mon Hawk, at the end of the day these guys are still football players, and that's what we want to hear about.
I know we can't have it all... And it's good that he places so much importance on the intangibles, because that's how you change the culture of a program. Now it's time to prove that he can translate high character to wins.

Some of you guys that are right now before the ink has even dried on the LOI's calling again for Hawk's job really do amaze me. Give it a rest. I guess the national power that CU was 4 years ago is what you want (72 to 3 Big 12 championship game). My take on this class is that it will fulfill needs in some areas immediately and we will determine the quality down the road with the rest of the players. I live in Tucson and one hears the same unsubstantive crap down here. Realize it, get used to it and try just once to understand it!!! Unless you are OU and UT in the Big 12 and USC and now maybe UCLA in the Pac 10 this type of class is what most of the rest of the teams in conferences recruit. Win a few more games each year and you get a few more players with stars behind their names. Mike Stoops said it in today's Tucson paper and other coaches are saying the same thing all over the country, even including the OU's & USC's: "All those (ranking) stars go out the window after today, it's developing a star that counts". I think the present CU coaching staff is still capable of that. If not we will start over with another painful 4 or 5 year process after next years season with a new coach.

I must amend my last post. If God forbid we have to go through a coaching change after next year it might not be quite as painful as this rebuilding has become. The reason is that the cupboard would not be near as bare as when Hawk arrived. I don't think people realize how low this program was and how far it has come in 3 short years.

Good posts, AZ ...
I agree. Perhaps we are paying more attention to the recruits than we used to, or perhaps there is just more information available, but it certainly seems to me that the players being brought in now are going to be four year contributors to the program.
If we can avoid all of the injuries (and yes, suspensions), the Buffs' schedule in 2009 is more conducive for success. Breakthrough season? I believe it's very possible!
Go Buffs!

Does the lack of depth explain the ISU loss two years ago? How about the loss to the worst team in the B12 A&M last year? How about being unprepared at the beginning of almost every game (Missouri comes to mind-that was embarassing)? None of that has to do with recruiting or depth-it is purely coaching. This is the year-put up or buy out the contract.

The buffs have an excellent chance this year to prove the faith in the Hawk. Soup, I liked his video press conference as well. Fine person indeed. Excellent thought process.
He has now had 4 years of his recruits. Although the first year this process was mainly influenced by the past vs the future.
And the 07 season was the first stepping stone. 2008 the distance to the next stone was too far and not enough "supplies" to continue the trip...
A pause, even a bit of a setback ensued.....That setback certainly had an impact on this recruiting class and I believe Hawk made the very best out of this situation.
This year is the next "long distance" stepping stone. It is assumed he has the "supplies" this year to overcome potential obstacles.
My issue always goes back to the Staff. Are they ready to "not play intramural ball?" They can ill afford ANY coaching errors as the buffs are still young and WILL make mistakes.
It is up to the coaching staff to "create the environment" to allow the young buffs to be successful.....There has to be "an umbrella and a net" environment. This is to protect them when they fall and cover them with the correct attitudes and thought processes focused on success.....
Can Helfrich define and implement an offense with and identity and attitude? Can Riddle provide the same for the Special teams?
QB needs to be picked in the spring...this waiting has not and will not work.....
Lets go buff coaches "buffalo up" and lets roll.

Don't buy this rated players don't make top teams; top teams get lots of rated players!Over time this is proven to work, sure, sometimes there are surprises that work.

"not a good game day coach" posters
Hawk has consistantly had teams ready to play.
you look at 07 with experienced guys we beat OU ran over Tech, and came into a lot of games fired up.
Even this year we came in good. We put more presure on McCoy than anyone, we went into Neb hurting NO safeties, and gave them a run.
Gave pat White all he could handle, good come backs in Iowa and Eastern, and A&M if it wasn't for a freshman making a freshman mistake.
getting 9 points in your last 3 games is not being a good game day coach or prepared going in
With young guys it's hard to coach them past Big MO, as experience comes so comes the ability to play past adversity.
Hawk is a good game day coach, and if you go to a coaches clinic you will hear all the X's and O's you want.
PS he did talk about the recruits and their abilities.

That would be a typical Buff, can't think for himself! Mandel is an idiot and you should know that. How do you figure a class that signed 20 recruits, ranked at 28 by rivals with 3.25 star average is disappointing? I suppose your happy with your class ranked at what (48 with a 2.84 star average). The only reason some other schools were ranked higher is because they signed more players (some up to 28). Also, what Mandel doesn't remember is yes Bo is a hot shot new coach coming off a bowl win, but Nebraska wasn't even ranked in the top 25 during or at the end of the season. We will see next year! Lets break down that vaunted NU rcruiting class again.
On O
we have the great Cody Green of course. Lotta folks here and there wonder about that first name. On top of that he is injury prone and his style may not fit Watson's real well.
After that we have
a FB....kind of an antiquated position
4 way undersized O linemen
another O lineman who will cry like a baby if he doesnt get his way....from CO no less.
a small slow WR
a WR who does have measurables but is from a JC. We know he wont flunk out in Lincoln but will he remember which route to run?
The best thing on O I see right now is the lineman from North Dakota. that kid is huge and is quick for his size.
On D they actually look like they got some help.
A 4 star DE and several 3 star corners.
The DT they got is undersized too though.
A qb who will wind up at safety that everyone thinks will be another Walters.
Not real bad overall, but nowhere near any of the big boys.

VK you really need to give this Offense thing a rest. We all know what we saw last year. There is plenty of blame to go around but it is not all on Helfrich. I watched him down here in AZ with ASU a fairly experienced team but really not very good QB's and he put points on the board by the bunches. It all comes down to this year and we will see what we will see. Then when the conditions are more normal make your decisions. I will admit their were times last year when I couldn't figure out what they were trying to do but the times they are a changing. Maybe you need to play more golf in AZ on green grass fairways rather than those dormant courses you are playing on. Might change your outlook on life etc.

I agree, nowhere near the big boys. Nebraska historically never received large numbers of the big recruits like the big boys. But, we just develop what we get, not unlike Colorado.
That Fullback you refer to most likely will play Running Back or Linebacker. He has the size and speed for both. But, who know maybe the Huskers are going old school. We also added one from last year who didn't quite qualify, but Nebraska didn't abandon him. He's current enrolled and ready for Spring.

az st.put alot of numbers up under helfrich, mainly in the passing game, which the cu staff has tried to establish, since that is the offense of this era,it's the smart thing to do,we just haven't had the receivers, dare i mention the broken "o" line, nope, not at all,a damn excuse....or a fact. And wisely hawk has added more depth at o line,he tried at wr,i think one of the 'athletes' will be a wr...and the frosh of last yr must step up,throw in rodney and hopefully d scott, and things just might look a helluva lot different.

and the defense did pretty dang good considering the Helfrich offense gave the opponent field postion inside the buff 40 at least 3 times every game.

lance: I agree there are a lot of parts that have to come together to have a high-powered offense in big time college football today. We didn't have it last year or the previous two. We will still be young next year but unless we have been played for total dunces CU will improve dramatically. Helfrich knows offense and so does Hawk. All the moving parts will be more experienced and hopefully not injured. HOW MANY TIMES MUST WE REPEAT OURSELVES?!!!!! IT TAKES A LOT LONGER TO BUILD A GOOD SOLID PROGRAM THAN IT DOES TO TEAR IT DOWN.

I know, did the Spring skiing thing in college. Unfortunately, I had to grow up and get a real job. Sometimes those jobs require one to relocate around the United States. Maybe if Colorado charged a little $ for the Spring game, Colorado could update their facilities and attract recruits like the Big Boys? Then again, they should probably start by selling out a game or two first. Wouldn't want to hit everyone up at once. I see they are raising the prices for season tickets. I thought everyone made great money in Colorado?

Smiles and Hugs don't win football games; tough players, schooled in fundamental techniques, with the desire to refuse to lose, that is what wins football games. Smoke and mirror time is over Hawkins, win this year, big, or this class will not be playing much for you.
The class is disappointing except for the Colorado kids and that is where you have to build your base, so kudos for that.
Now, let's see if Hawkins can coach'em up, because I don't think he can and I don't think his 4th team will be any better than the first 3 with the same coaching staff, particularly the OC and the ST coaches, and the same group of QBs. If they don't get a real playmaker at QB, they won't win. If Hawkins makes the same stupid game decisions, they won't win. If they don't find a cold blooded field goal kicker like Jim Hansen was in 1990, they won't win.

Helfrich was not the OC at ASU he was the passing coordinator. The head coach (ex Boise St.) Dick Koetter was the offensive guru. Helfrich designed a passing attack that was pretty darn good. Better than Shawn Watson at CU or nu. Come on VK get on the bandwagon Helfrich is going to be at CU this coming year and he just might have some experienced talent to move the ball. Just read on the DP that the spring game is the same day as the first day of the NFL draft. How about this for a promo: Play the NFL draft live on the big screen while the spring game in on! Or at least have the running draft info on the board.
Or play the highlight reals of the just signed class. Plus highlights of the the guys we have yet to see on the field in Black and Gold.
Just do something.. and do it soon. It was fun last year, but the effort was not exactly stellar. Get the people in the seats this year too and figure out a way to make some money off of it. At least get the good will flowing. It is a step towards building the type of fan base that regularly sells out the games. Baby steps.

Brad da Buff - you have some good takes. You need to lay off our safeties! Your assessment of their talent leads me to believe your football knowledge is somewhat limited. Perkins plays the entire WV game and grades out at 95+. Did ANYONE even realize Dykes wasn't playing?? Mahnke starts at Nebraska and grades out at 96. Plus, has the big sack & big hit just before half. What does it say about our "regular" safeties (Dykes & Walters) when the biggest hit from that position for the ENTIRE season is by a 18 year old true freshman??? Plus, they are only going to get better. It is beyond me why Dykes was even playing in the first place. Perkins was better & is a red shirt frosh. Why not play this kid with the HUGE upside vs. an average player like Dykes.
Can anyone help me on this one: Why isn't Stengel playing more? Bigger, faster, stronger, makes plays in his limited playing time. Play him in front of Mohler.

I'm a little disappointed in their haul too. It is tough to recruit to the Fort though. They don't play in a BCS conference and they have less fan support than the Buffs. Their stadium being where it is also probably hurts. Even though I want the Buffs to beat them every year, I still want them to win every other game.
Hopefully it is just a reflection of his staff not having built the long term relationships with the recruits yet. Hopefully their class next year will be much improved.

Has Nebraska ever, at any time, been consistently challenging for the over hyped #1 ranked recruitng class? Do they give championship trophies for having the #1 ranked recruitng class? Not that I haev ever seen. Not even through the mid to late 90's was NU a regular at the top of the recruiting "big boys." Seemed to do ok and get pretty decent results back than. I thin the approach is just fine.
You are right about adding players to the defense. Keep in mind the large number of schollie players that were RS last year.
Many of those players are lb's and db's. Going to start seeing some serious athletes at lb and db for NU. You missed one though, LB Chris Williams, remember the name.

Oh yeah, and a D-line that with the return of Ndamukong Suh is set to be even more dominant and troublesome for opposing offenses in 09. Return of starting DE B. Turner who missed 80% of games with leg injury. This injury turned into a huge blessing in disguise as his backup, Pierre Allan, a name I am sure is familiar to buffies, got nearly a full years of starting experience and played very very well.
D line will be Strongside DE P. Allan, DT Suh, NT B. Steinkuhler and/or T. Moore and B. Turern at Weakside DE.
And with an experienced secondary and lots of speed and athletes coming in at LB.
The performance of the defense in the Gator Bowl was the best performance the defense had under Pelini and will only get better. If not for offensive miscues Clemson only scores 7 points. Gave up less than 45 yds rushing to Clemson RB tandem of Spiller and Davis who had been having a nice season until they faced the new and improved "Blackshirts." Have to say, things looking mighty fine.
You guys still trying to find a kicker? We got one! He's pretty good too, with a very strong leg. Remember him?

...Oh yeah...
The only bad thing about the creamer corn and buff game is that, other than beating the buffs, which is unlikely, the creamers will have nothing to play for....Back to interrelated mediocracy....

MDBuff: Out of one side of your mouth, you hype the great 09 class of the Buffs and out of the other side you ridicule the Husker 09 class. Both Rivals and Scout rank the Husker class considerably higher than the Buff class. You need to do some rethinking. Forget winning the Big XII North.

MDBUff,
You're calling NU's recent recruiting class a "disappointment" yet EVERY service has them rated quite a bit higher than your buffies. Scout and Rivals both have NU rated as the 4th best class in the Big 12. If, not for Texas A & M taking 28 players to NU's 21 Nebraska probably 3rd. And that's coming from the people that do this sort of stuff for a living.
So, if NU class is a disappointment, what do you call the buffies class?
I'm still waiting for an answer.
Boy, I hope you don't use this sort of logic in treating your patients. Keep your day job doc.
Patient to MD BUFF: "You know doc, I can't pee without lots of pain, my balls hurt, and I found a big lump on one of my testicles."
MDbuff to patient: "Well, let's run an EKG on your heart."
huh???

Is he a doctor? I sort of thought the MD stood for Maryland...
Anyway, looking at a class rank is kind of silly at this stage don't you think? And the fact that the Buffs filled their needs pretty well is what we are happy about. Also, all of our underrated guys look good. They have either were late bloomers or had an injury in their junior/senior years which kept their stock levels lower than they should have been. No worries. Hawk and his coaches know talent when they see it.
Anyway, we'll see you on the field next year and the players will settle things there. NU loses a lot of linemen, their starting QB and lots of other contributors from their team. CU doesn't lose any where near as many contributors from last year and have added lots of depth. We took you to the wire with 49 scholarship players traveling. We look to have considerably more help this year at home. Should be a good game.

bufftime,
NU played down to the buff's in Lincoln. And Pelini got away with one of the most boneheaded and stupid calls I have ever seen.
I still think Pelini is a fine coach and will do fine at NU but hopefully he learned a lesson or two as a first year HC. As the year went on, he seemed to greatly tone down the sideline scenes and he took responsibbility for the stupid call for a fake FG at end of half. Otherwise, NU wins by about 20.
Although, there was a positive to that call for a fake FG and it was that on the 57 yd FG the buffs had to honor the fake. Watch the replays, 4 buffs standing behind the line, protecting against the fake and nothing else. If, buff's didn't protect against that play on the 57 yd FG, and they go all out for the block, and Pelini calls it again, it's a td.
I hope he learned that once you use a play like that that most teams will be ready for it. Plays like that only good about once a yr, if that.
Losing the right side of o line. But one fo the few positives of the Callhan regime is he stockpiled a roster full of large, athletic O lineman. They will be fine.

luvdacream no you don't...did you even watch the game? Win by 20?
creamers played poorly all year...they played up to the buffs and almost got their butts kicked except for th 2 really bad ref calls and the unholiest of fieldgoals by a short-legged kicker.
creamlover, in this millenium your lowely creamcorncobs are only 4 and 4 with the buffalo.
you get a recruiting class ranked 30 and you are happy?
My my the buff 65 to 17 blasting has certainly changed your outlook.

4 and 8, No excuses next year, VR. Seems to me that the scoreboard showed the Puffs LOST to NU. Oh, that's right, CU has always counts their "moral" victories. You will win four and have six moral victories next year. Let's see, six plus four, that equals your ten wins. Ha ha.

My Dear VR, did you really me ahah,
4 wins, no excuses. Winning the big XII (that means 12)North means having a program good enough to beat the Big Red. Maybe in a few years ya will be in the running, after ya ditch your little coach and his son. After that, ya hasta gets through the Big Red of the south. Ya know, the one that's won seven national titles.

Vk,
After you're brilliant run of predicting NU losses in 08 don't you think it's time that you leave it to the experts and those that know a thing or two about football and can put hatred and obsession a side??
Some of VK's predictions of 08.. W. Mich puts a whooping on NU in the opener. But, when it didn't happen, they just suck. But, they still made a bowl game. HUH? That makes sense
VK also boldly predicted NU losses to ISU, BAYLOR, KANSAS, KSU and the buffies.
WoW! Nice track record there. You have no creditibility
I predicted an 8-4 record for NU before the season, seems I may know quite a bit more than you. There's that kNowledge thing again.
Just the facts arseclown
