Colorado football fans received a four-star gift on Tuesday morning as Bellflower, Calif., wide receiver Shay Fields verbally committed to the Buffaloes.
The speedy St. John Bosco wide out took to Twitter to announce his decision. Fields is the first true wide receiver to commit to CU for 2014 and its highest rated player for the class according to Rivals rankings.
I want to thank all the coaches that provided me with the opportunity that they gave me but I will be going to the city of boulder— Shay (@shaysosa01) January 28, 2014
Fields originally committed to Boise State, but switched to Southern California later in the process. After USC changed coaches and the new Trojans staff reportedly cooled on his recruitment, Fields took trips to Colorado and Cal, ultimately deciding to give his pledge to the Buffs. Rivals lists Colorado assistant coach Charles Clark as the lead recruiter for Fields.
"I didn't have any contact with the new staff at USC and could tell it was time to go in a different direction," Fields told Scout's Greg Biggins (link). "Colorado had been recruiting pretty hard all along and then really picked it up in the last month. I took my official visit out there two weeks ago and really loved the place.
"They have a really young team with a good young quarterback. Coach Walters said I could come in and be a key impact player right away and that's what I'm looking to do. He told me I could be a headliner for this recruiting class and be a major part of the program turning around. I'm really excited about this opportunity and I'm ready to get going," he continued.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Fields is ranked as a four-star prospect by Rivals and a three-star by Scout; Rivals has him as the No. 44 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 36 player out of the state of California.
Fields caught 82 passes for 1,617 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior after recording 576 yards and four scores as a junior. Bosco went 16-0, winning a CIF championship during Fields' senior season.
The next step for CU and Fields is Signing Day on Feb. 5.
